5.1 Enchanting mats and gems tanking?

I've read and now understand that due to the upgrade system there will not be as much of a need for the enchanting mats and gems. This scares the crap out of me as a shuffler on an overpopulated server because due to bots and farmers the gem market is all pretty much 5-15g above vendor value for rare blue/yellow/red and 100-150 for green/orange/purple (due to the valu of meta gems). I even DE the 450 rings/necks now just due to the overwhelming competition and AH bots that undercut you in an instant. Enchanting mats and metas are my main source of income now as these are all major quick sellers but with the upgrade system not requiring new enchants and gems it's kind of leaving me in the "dust".

    Thoughts?

I've had a totally different experience on my server, a medium pop realm. I have totally refocused my sales to raw gems and enchanting mats ONLY. For some odd reason, cut gems and JC blue always sell below cost (and have not risen above cost in about one month).

Players will always need gems and enchants, but you have to expect your profits to diminish the farther into the expansion/patch we progress; there will be less demand since players are gear capping (and I don't mean full heroic gear, I just mean the cap available to them, i.e. they can't get into raids, then they will be stuck with thier LFR gear until the next patch)

I have played on full/high pop realms before, and the only advice I can give would be test the different markets, for example if raw gem prices are tanking, look at transmutes available. Maybe try the Ironpaw shuffle or get into the sniping/flipping market.

To upgrade a piece of gear 8 points it takes 1500 valor. This would take a 489 MSV epic up to a 497 and make it 1 ilvl better than a HoF epic. But you can only earn 1000 valor a week. That means it will take you 3 weeks to make 2 pieces of gear not need a potential upgrade. I'm not convinced this will have very much of an effect on anything.

Now with the ore nerf I'm speculating the exact opposite of my fears.

Well as an both a shuffler and an active raider, I guess i could give my two copper on this topic

My focus regarding spending the valor point on gear is that I will use my points on BiS item first, and then move down the list so to speak. Because of that, it will take quite some time to upgrade all the gear, and in the meantime I will still be getting upgrades on the slots I've been far less lucky on Having that in mind I would assume, it won't have the big impact on the gem market at least. And with the new nerf on the Ghost Iron Ore, this should probably be the least of your worries for the time being.

People wont spend the valor upgrade on anything that isnt
    - their weapon / trinkets ( these are a special snowflake )
    - something that will realisticly their BiS, at which point they wont replace it anyway already so no more need to buy stuff from ah.

Ofcourse there are dumb people that will upgrade their MSV normal mode items ( non weapon / trinket ) only to find out a HoF equivalent drop and thinking like "meh, cba enchanting this new piece so Ill stick with my MSV upgraded piece " but those are going to rare I think.

That's not entirely true, although I agree that BiS/Weapon/Trinkets should probably be the first things you upgrade, and there's no reason to upgrade MSV gear (especially LFR versions).

    Case in point:

As I was looking at my gear last night, I noticed that upgrading my [Mender's Girdle of Endless Spring] will net me LESS of an upgrade compared to [Firerider Treads] because spirit and haste are the only things I care heavily about right now. Since I would reforge the belt to haste, I actually would be better served upgrading my boots, even though the belt is near-BiS.
