Dont forget that reds might not still be that an obvious choice, as they are now. The JC market will be much more diversified, and the luck factor of those early discoveries might pay out big time.
Also, one more important aspect: if one type of gem remains used very little, you can combine it to discover other types of patterns, once you are done with that particular gem's cuts. So, if blue is not used, like now, you can learn all the solids, sparklies, etc (there arent many), and continue using them to get green/red/orange/purple/yellow ones at random. This is quite awesome, hope it stays.
While the initial reaction to a less gated system is 'omg the market will be flooded with red gems in the first week', we must also consider the fact that gems in MoP will be designed to be more appealing regardless of what the stats on it are. For those that don't know, a perfect example is that a red gems will grant 120 int, for example, and an orange gem will grant 60 int and 120 crit. Those numbers aren't exact, but the aim is to grant more of the secondary stats to make hybrid gems more appealing.
For goblins, this (hopefully) means that players will favor hybrid gems more in MoP than they have EVER in the past, and thus demand rises, allowing us to invest our JC points not only in red gems initially, and nab the popular hybrids to get around the flood of green goblins trying to sell red gems in the first week.
@TimB thats a good point, i forgot they were upping the secondary stats on hybrid cuts. Starting with purples or oranges seems logical then. Unless there's a meta cooldown.
Oh good! I must have missed this. Now my JC/Ench will have a way to burn all those SoH i get while leveling.
The thing with research is you can't cache it up. When 4.3 hit, people who had done the dailies every day even though they had everything already went into the epic patterns with a stockpile of tokens. 4 tokens per random and you crank out a ton of patterns. My first random was delicate queen's garnet. I just pretty damned happy. Right now I'm only missing one or two patterns. Soon I'll be completely done with cata dailies, unless they provision some sort of rollover to mop tokens from cata, but that's doubtful.
Excellent point. Then, if Blizzard ever needs to adjust the flow of gem cuts, they can just increase or remove the CD. When it comes time to implementing Epic MoP gems, they've got a seamless transition already in place. Now we'll never have to bother with all that foolish [item]pyrite ore/item] speculation...
Meta gem designs.
Zone drop BoP must have JC to get the drops.
So far only seen dropping in valley of the four winds.
lil more info for ya all some of it I know already posted.
Before the new JC stuff was in I was able to get to 540 using Cata stuff.
JC trainer in Jade forrest Center of map little north of Dawn's Blossom at Greenstone village
This trainer has more designs to train than all the other trainers. (I think it was like 5 or 6)
10 sparkling shards to make one serpents eye/JC only gem.
The cut gems you get from research do not fit in gem bags.
Research one a day cool down at midnight and/or no cool down using 3 SoH
Research will give you design of another random color if you know all of the cuts from the color your actually using.
Do we have any idea yet where the various rare necklace (ie. [Golembreaker Amulet]), ring (ie. [Band of Blood]) et. al. recipes come from?
Since they don't seem to be part of the JC daily research, perhaps we return to the WotLK days where they drop off the final bosses in dungeons?
Seeing how there's a total of 68 rare cuts in MoP, it breaks down for the following colors.
Red: 5
Purple: 14
Orange: 22
Green: 18
Yellow: 5
Blue: 4
If one was to research one cut per day using 3 gems, it would take the total number of days listed above to learn all the cuts via research. Total required rare gems to do all the research goes by:
Red: 15
Purple: 43
Orange: 66
Green: 54
Yellow: 15
Blue: 12
However if you already did all the research for that color, say you use blue you can use it to discover another color.
If you were to use all the gem colors and research everyday without using spirit of harmony, it will only take 11.3 days to learn all the cuts.
If you were you use only one gem and do one research per day, lets say you use the cheapest rare quality gem, such as green or blue, you'll still learn all the rare cut patterns in 68 days, far faster than the currently gated system to learned 1 per 3 day for rare, one per 4 days for epics if its RNG, or one per 5 days if you learn specifically .
If you only wanted to do two research a day using the cheapest research around, using two 'worthless' rare I'm guessing its going to be blues, and greens it will only take 34 days.
I see the gating mech changed around a bit, instead of using a daily that you can do one per day, and the currency of using 3 uncommon gem, to earn tokens you can buy whatever rare cut you want, you consume 3 rare gems for RNG research of that color, or if that color is already all discovered you'll learn another color. I think the initial investment cost will be higher due to the consumption of rare gems, but it unlocks the cuts faster despite the RNG nature you'll still learn all the cuts faster in the long run.
If your cheap and don't feel like burning rubies to learn the research this gives many more options for discovering gem cuts.
Someone correct me if I am wrong (I have not played MOP beta) JC research can only be done once per day (outside of spirits of harmony), not once per color. Yeah, it is great we are going to be able to learn recipes at a faster rate, not likely they will shorten this down to 12 days or less. No way they will let this fly, other professions will pitch a fit.
