I was thinking the same thing. Part of the "aura" of gold making for me is the challenge it presents, much like PvP or raiding for raiders. if I could simply and *legally* buy my way to $10 million, then why shuffle?
I am also still on the fence regarding this new tradeable pet. At first, I was thinking, "Yay! I could buy 10 of them, and slowly sell them"....but then realized that this is no different from buying gold now, other than it's legal....and everyone and their brother will be selling these.
Also keep in mind, not everything that is tradeable can be sold on the AH (easily, muahahaha).....so if they make this non-postable on the AH, only a few folks, such as myself who know how, will ever be able to post these on the AH.
All speculation, I know.

I really don't think this will do much on the gold selling scene, this only works for a $ -> gold conversion for as long as there is demand for this, what'll be really expensive, pet. Think about it, the person coughing up the 8-10k is getting a pet! He's not getting one penny from the transaction, so the only people buying will be hard core pet collectors untill the gold cost becomes so low the average joe will buy it, at that point it doesn't become worth it and a balance point comes about, but I think it'll be a really slow market after the initial demand, because it's a one way gold purchase, won't affect the black gold market at all IMO.
The biggest problem I can see with this is the precedent it sets. It opens the door to a more thorough RMT system within WoW.
For gobins, I see this as being a fairly decent opportunity to take advantage of the impatient and feint-hearted. RMT will make this corner of the AH a lot more accessible for those who are less economically adept or simply don't care. I say we welcome them with open arms and deep pockets...

What would really make this interesting, is if they added a new mount like this.
I'm skeptical that this is going to bring in the 10-15K per pet that I've seen bandied about in gchat.
First, you need pet collectors who are willing to spend 10K on a pet, per character. We've become spoiled by the Pet Store 10-packs, and asking players to drop 100K on these may dampen enthusiasm just a bit.
Second, you need pet collectors who don't just pony up the $10 for themselves. More importantly, you need collectors who didn't buy two of the dang things, one to keep and one to sell - double damage as you lose a customer and gain a competitor. I think there will be far more pet collectors with $10 in their pocket than with 10,000g on their character.
Three, most 10K pets are rare: oozlings, Hyanciths, a few whelpings. Pets at these prices already sit on the AH for weeks waiting for a collector, but sellers have no real incentive to drop their price. The puppy? Pages of them. It's going to get ugly after the first few rounds of expired auctions.
Four, 10K is an awkward number. There's nothing to buy for 10,000g besides Kirin Tor rings, and getting gold for the more expensive chopper/mammoths/vials would require multiple pets. Epic flying, on the other hand, is only 4000g. Fresh 70's or 80's in desperate need of fast flying mounts will be prime candidates for this pet, and may be willing to let it go for cheap if it gets them onto their mounts faster.
Remote AH? That's how I posted the valentine's necklaces when they otherwise couldn't be posted.
As for all the hullabaloo, I honestly don't think demand for these pets will be that high, and I don't foresee them going for 10k+ after the first week. Much more worrying to me is the precedent that it sets. I think Blizz is moving towards a real money AH in WoW, and that is both exhilarating and terrifying.

I agree with the analysis that this will be a hugely declining asset. Unlike the EVE Online Plex, which has ongoing value and fluctuates a bit, the demand for new pets/mounts is huge initially and then once all the players who want it have it, the demand drops dramatically. Plex seems very good idea.
There is no telling how much the first few will sell or be listed for. But who will be buying pets, from the AH or for $10, after a month or two? So pets will not be the gold/dollar exchange metric one would hope.
I can probably see myself getting one with gold.
Knowing my server, lads will undercut each other till they go to 1silver each
The last DMC taught me a big lesson, people arnt patient on my server. Volcano cards got down to 2k, bought up 4 and flipped them selling for 7k.
If this drops to around the 6k mark I'll probably pick two up, one for me and one to flip
