    Professions to Use on Alts

    Greetings,

I have decided to start creating alts recently for fun and to be able to add more professions to my shuffle, so my question is what would be the best for each of my characters. My current plan is as follows:

    Mage: Jewelcrafting/Enchanting
    Paladin: Alchemy/Inscription
    Death Knight: Blacksmith/???
    Monk: ???/???
    Warlock: Tailoring/Inscription

The only toon I actually have the professions leveled to max is the Mage. The others are just planned and I have not yet started leveling any professions on them. I'd be able to power level any of the professions so that is not an issue.

    I would do this instead:

    DK BS/Mining
    Monk: LW/Engineering

Alchemy isn't that great at this moment, so I would advice you to open up all markets and get Mining so you can smelt your own bars.

Although I agree with colleague, @Mithrildar, that Alchemy is not doing great right now.... in absolute terms, you just don't have enough Alchemists. SO here is my assessment:

    1) You need more Alchemists. Markets rise and fall. CD's are amazingly profitable, and you'll be convinced of it the first time you get a Living Steel x 5 message.
    2) You don't have any gatherers. My personal belief is that GATHERING is the ONLY profession to have while leveling. it's free XP, and lots of it. Then you can send those "free" mats to your BS/Alchemist/Scribe for further processing.

One other note... the "free" debate (are mats you gather free?) has been sufficiently argued. However, there is one time I believe that gathered mats are MOSTLY free, and that is during leveling. In other words, the main argument against those mats being free is that it still took time. Time that could have been spent doing something else. So that time equates to GPH, and hence, going out to gather mats is still costing you.

But...if you're already out there leveling in the world, picking up the extra herb or ore is not costing you, you're already there. So I always encourage folks to pick up dual gathering on new alts, and take advantage of it. Once you hit max level, you have the gold to drop it and choose a crafting profession.

Maybe this is due to being on a low pop server, but I've never found my X-mute Alch to be extremely profitable. Don't get me wrong...I made a ton of gold with him at the start of the expansion but by now he's role is to support by JC and my BS.

Living Steel on my realm sells (very slowly) for near the cost of base mats. It's not worth leveling another toon and tying up another profession slot when my only profit is the proc chance once a day.

Yes, this can be true...however: the proc rate is actually double when you consider the Trillium transmute. In other words, if I'm getting 20% procs on Ghost Iron Bars to Trillum Bars, then another 20% from the Trillium to Living Steel, it could make it viable. Just something to think about, especially for diversification. I spread my ore out into just about every possible direction:

Ore - Gems, sell uncuts / rares
Ore - Gems - Transmute into rares (sell raw / cut and sell cuts)
Ore - Gems - cut - sell perfects / rares
Ore - Gems - Transmute into Primal Diamonds - Cut / Sell Raw
Ore - Gems - Jewelry - sell Jewelry
    Ore - Gems - Jewelry - DE - Dusts/Essences
Ore - Gems - Jewelry - DE - Make Scrolls - Sell Scroll
Ore - Bars - sell bars
Ore - Bars - transmute to Trillium - sell Trillium
Ore - Bars - transmute to Trillium - craft Masterwork gear
Ore - Bars - transmute to Trillium - Transmute to Living Steel
Ore - bars - transmute to Trillium - Transmute to Living Steel - craft & sell Living Steel items

Unless I'm missing something off the top of my head, not a single line up there loses money, but keeps you nice and diversified. it's true you only need one Alchemist to do the transmutes, but anything with a CD makes it worthwhile in my opinion to make more Alchemists.

I'm in pretty much all those markets as well, but with only a single transmute alchemist. I'm not arguing that having more x-mute alchemists would be profitable, but you're only gaining a single daily CD.

I'd rather max out all the professions so that I can get a slice of all the markets before I start duplicating professions for a daily CD. Just a personal preference I guess.

Transmuting individual rare cuts really depends on the golden lotus prices.

But, many of these transmute activities do not need the multiple daily cooldowns to benefit.

I agree with the preference to have one of each type of alchemist to cover all your bases. Although potions aren't doing too great on my server, the last few weeks flasks have been.

Ok awesome thanks for the feedback guys. I was also wondering, since the mage is my only max level toon and i have enchant/jc on it shoul i replace enchanting witg somehing more profitable like alchemy or inscription? All my profits are from JC right now so im not sure if it would be good or not.

Enchanting and JC both have patterns behind rep grinds. Alchemy and Inscription do not. All you need to gain max profitability from either of those is a level 80 toon.

I know that and I don't have any level 80s right now so I'm tryin to figure out what is bes until I do. Enchants doesn't seem as profitable as it could be on my realm.
