Thread: Dark Iron Bars

    Dark Iron Bars

I recently stumbled upon a rather simple monopoly for the fledgling goblins out there: .

This is not a huge market, but it is one with next to zero competition. A quick scan of The Undermine Journal shows that most realms have somewhere between zero and a few bars available. The reason this is a low competition market is because it has three things working against it.

    1) It takes eight to make one bar.
    2) You have to complete a quest in BRD to learn to smelt the bars.
    3) You have to go back to BRD each time you want to smelt bars.

You've got a trifecta of "insurmountable" obstacles for the average player. Since we are not average players, we're going to take advantage of this laziness. The first thing you will want to do is start collecting some ore. If you are a miner, you may already be soloing Molten Core and pulling in quite a bit of this on your own. Either way, collect what you can from the AH as well. It generally runs 1.5-2g each. This puts your cost for bars at about 12-16g. You will want to collect a good number before moving on to the next steps. Since we have to travel to BRD to smelt, it's not worth going with 8 ore. Wait until you have a bunch to make the trip.

Alright, plenty of bars, time to head to BRD. If you do not have the recipe to smelt, you should also pick up what you need to complete [quest]4083[/quest]. Head to Blackrock Mountain, take the trip down the chain and head on into BRD. To your right is a mole machine. Hop in and take the option for, "Just past the Grim Guzzler". You'll find yourself on a semi-circular path. Take the door in the middle of the semi-circle. Sneak past Ambassador Flamelash, through the Foundry and into the Summoners' Tomb. You'll see seven dwarves here. So, now, my little Snow White, turn to the right and talk to Gloom'rel. Select the conversation option and a little brazier appears next to him. Talk to that to complete the quest.

Now that you've got your bars and the ability to smelt the bars, you need to go just a little farther. First, you will need to kill the seven dwarves. For anyone over level 70, this should be trivial. Be sure to loot the chest before you leave. Head through the door near the chest and turn right. You will see the bridge across to Molten Core (*) guarded by a couple elementals. To the left of the bridge, you will see a strange little box in the middle of a lava waterfall being guarded by a single elemental. Kill him because that box is where you have to smelt the bars. Smelt away and hearth back out of this veritable hellhole.

At this point, you should be able to set the price on the bars. Keep in mind that this is not a high-volume market. The main buyers are going to be people crafting (**) and perhaps . However, you should be able to set your price. I have sold a couple stacks without reposting at 25g/bar. I suspect you could push the price to at least 50g if you want. The posting fees are also quite a bit lower than you would expect so it's not a big problem to have to repost.

    Enjoy!

    * - If you are not attuned to Molten Core, you can do this while you are down here. Before entering BRD, talk to Lothos Riftwaker at the bottom of the chain and pick up his quest. Then after you kill the seven dwarves, go across the bridge and pick up the quest item.

** - For the more seasoned goblins, I found the bars to be the most limiting factor in crafting the hammer. If you want to create hammers to sell to people who are after their achievement, you can make quite a lot doing so (although it's a slow investment). Most of the mats are trivial and very cheap to obtain now. The slower parts were (which cost about 750g each), (which was usually about 1k each) and I finally had to get the dark iron bars myself because they were never on the AH. are easy (and much cheaper) to make yourself. In the end, it cost me under 20k to make the hammer and I don't intend to sell them for less than 35k.

Great idea Calianna! One thing to add to that, after you have gotten attuned to Molten Core and assuming this method still works, a quick way to get back to the BRD forge to make more is to talk to Lothos Riftwaker again to enter Molten Core. After you enter the instance, turn around and run back out of the zone entrance. If it still works, it will drop you in BRD, right by the forge area. Hopefully that hasn't been changed.

Also, another note around the ... You can make additional gold (and a good bit of it) by buying up Sulfuron Ingots and turning them in to Lokhtos Darkbargainer in the Grim Guzzler bar in BRD. He is the Thorium Brotherhood NPC that you turn items in to in order to rep up with TB. When you talk to him, he has a little chat option after the repeatable rep quests. He then gives you an item that starts a quest. Basically, you just accept the quest and turn around and talk to Lokhtos again, turning in a Sulfuron Ingot and he gives you . The plans can sell for 3-5k typically.

Keep in mind that you can only do this one time per character. I've done it 5 times now (my pally is only lvl 35, so I can't do it on him yet). But, don't worry... after you complete it on your own characters, make some deals with guild members. Have them do the turn in for you and pay them say 100-200g for each one they turn in. Depending on how many people are in your guild (and the number of alts they have), you could stand to make a pretty large amount of profit. The plans will take a bit to sell... I had 5 to work with and it took me about 2 weeks to sell all 5, but I was able to sell them for 3-4k a piece. Most people are not aware of how you obtain those plans, so they are willing to shell out a decent bit of gold to get them. The purple name also helps a bit on that

To get to the bar quickly and easily, use the to get you and your guild member(s) to the Grim Guzzler bar quick and easy.

The trick of running out of MC doesn't work anymore. At least it didn't work for me. The only possibility is if you need to drop from the raid group before you run through the zone entrance. I did not try that.

Aww, bummer. Darn Blizzard and their thwarting of our speedy ways

Oh well, not like it takes that long to get there using the Mole Machine anyway.

Thanks Sterling! I should also add that this is a relatively controllable market since there is generally not a lot of dark iron ore available.

Edit: By relatively I mean, it's about as controllable as you can get. If someone determined wants to bust into any market, they still can.

I just checked Dark Iron Ore on my server... someone decided to spike the prices... cheapest is 25g per ore currently. But recent sales have been 2g or less per ore. I'll just watch and buy any that pop up under 2g a piece.

Actually this reminds me of the good old ATU days. One of the best contributions I had made to those forums was this very same tip. Dark Iron Ores -> Bars was insanely profitable, with foreign farmers running around searing gorge and posting hundreds of ores at a time. I think the conversion was 2g/stack -> 20g/stack or something. Made like 50g/day on that, big bucks!

with the removal of Thorium from Burning Steppes (at least, I haven't seen any there since Cata release), is BRD and Molten Core the only two places to get it anymore?

I don't remember seeing it outside those instances, but I haven't been mining in that area much. And, checking wowhead, it appears it is only available in those two places. MC is definitely the best place for a max level toon to get it. There are quite a few nodes in there.
