Dual-boxing with Recruit a Friend: Any pointers?

    Hello all,

This thread is obviously a little bit off-topic from the board's primary focus (the WoW Economy), but I trust this community so much when it comes to all things WoW-related that I really just had to ask.

Yesterday I was a bit bored, so I recruited myself through recruit-a-friend and decided to give dual-boxing a try for the first tine.

I know there are a lot of people here who play with multiple accounts in order to leverage both sides of the faction-based economy on a single realm. I'm wondering if anybody's experience with multiple accounts has included any dual-boxing, and if so what you would suggest for the dual-boxing novice?

What kind of macros do you use on your second account?
I've really only just started so I've kept it extremely simple so far. I bound a single key on my keyboard to a follow macro for my second account (/follow focus). Then, I bound the attack keys on my primary account to some assist macros on the second account (/assist focus /cast [spell]). I haven't gotten much more complex than that. My primary account can go through a full rotation, but my secondary account is only really ever casting one or two spells. I haven't branched out into healing spells or buff macros for my second account.

What additional software do you use?
I'm a Mac user, so I'm using a piece of software called CloneKeys (http://code.google.com/p/clonekeys/) to clone my keystrokes in both WoW applications.

    Which addons do you use?
I haven't used any yet, but I hear there are some that are considered essential for dualboxing.

Which classes are best for dual-boxing?
Ranged or melee? Which classes and specs? I've only tested the above with a Shaman and Mage setup. I haven't tried any melee teams.

How do you pickup and complete quests on your secondary accounts?
In my limited experience, this has been the most difficult part. What do you do to make this easier?

    PvE tips? PvP?
I'm really only looking to mess around with this and have some fun, but I know there are dual-boxers who are competitive both PvE and PvP. What are your secrets for success?

As you can probably deduce I'm very new at this having maybe 45 minutes of experience under my belt. I'm mainly looking for a new way to have fun in WoW, and maybe an opportunity to level some new characters quickly.

Thanks in advance for everybody's help.

Credit where it's due: The only web resource that I've consulted so far is this article from the old WoW Insider: http://wow.joystiq.com/2008/09/19/ad...c-dual-boxing/. I got the above macros from this article.

Id suggest you visit: http://www.dual-boxing.com/. I suspect most of your questions can be answered even better there. I have dual-boxed a little myself at did 80-85 with a boomkin + arcane mage at the start of cataclysm. Went a little faster than if I'd have leveled the chars separately but not that much. Bear in mind that I too am a novice at dual-boxing.

If it's just for power leveling I suggest macro in a follow command into all your second accounts abilities and basically just have them follow you around. You can also put in an assist macro so at least it's doing something productive :P

I did it back with the zephra RAF days.

I used a hunter as the second alt. Macro keys for pet attack and hunter autoshot so I just had one keystoke on the laptop while I played the main on the desktop. Not optimal DPS but negligible extra effort and the mage had a bear tanking for them.

Remember your 30 free levels. At the time I thought rogues were the slowest to level so I got my rogue to 30 since 30-60 is a bigger boost than 1-30.

I have boxed RAF multiple times. I always used a 3rd account and did dungeon carries for myself. I would have the 2 levelers just sit back a couple hundred yards (moving forward carefully and watching for patrols) in the dungeon and just wipe everything with a max level character. The experience will be nerfed a bit with the level difference, but with RAF the exp comes so fast it doesnt matter. If you only have 2 accounts I would just make the slave account have "/follow toon1" macros as said above while questing etc. I did prolly 8-10 toons up to 60 this way. Usually it took 1-2 days of playing (i.e. a weekend) to get to 60 (where RAF bonus stops). Then you hit the HELLFIRE WALL!!! I had alot of fun doing it though.

    Good luck!

Definitely look up www.dual-boxing.com. Also, there was a rather extensive guide written at the JMTC forums regarding RAFing. One of the MVPs wrote it but I can't remember whom. The thread should be about a year old.

If my memory serves me correct there is an addon called Jamba over at dual-boxing.com which really helps the dual (or 5 boxer). It will help you turn in quests at the same time, auto repair, auto sell grays, take same flight paths and other good stuff.

One thing that alot of single players over look is the interact with target function. This really changed the way that 5 boxers play the game. Hotkey interact with target then select a target hit your button and watch them run to the target. This makes melee boxing possible.

Like others have said setup /follow macros on the toons that you won't be controlling directly. Remove the WASD keybindings on the toons that will follow. When you are leveling try and stay away from collect quests. It gets really annoying trying to find xx * 2(or 5) of something. Kill quests are the greatest beacuse you can do them so fast.

Some quick tips I can tell you since I did research into this although never followed through:

    * "Gather X" quests slow you down because you have to gather that many drops for each character. They are essentially fighting over the drops between themselves.
    * Do instance boosts whenever you can, but they aren't needed for you to level quickly
    * Characters in question should probably be leveled individually until level 10 or so
    * There is a tailored TourGuide file at dual-boxing.com that helps point you toward quests as you level. There should be a version tailored for RAF also that eliminates ~20% of the quests (my estimation).
    * There should be /follow and /loot macros at D-B.com as well as macros for mounting, etc.

Believe it or not, one of the biggest time sinks will likely be emptying bags when you reach a vendor, town, or city.

If you're doing RAF, make liberal use of the portaling option, and have some characters sitting around to soak up the bonus levels. Try to find some friends in higher level guilds to help you with portaling to get to new zones/locations.

My wife actually has a non-expansion account that we've been dabbling with lately, but she only plays about once a week , So I was thinking about using some of her extra character slots to RAF some of my lower-level alts. I was going to give it a go over the weekend, I'll let you know how it goes.
