[OUTDATED] Advanced Tutorial: Adding Uncached Items to Auctioneer's Snatch List

EDIT 1: If a WoWhead item link returns nothing, even after repeated attempts, this is because the item is server/locale uncached. In this case, the tutorial will be of help to you.
EDIT 2: This method works for ALL items, including unchached items. Fixed title to reflect this.

If you are familiar with auctioneer's snatch list feature, you have likely encountered the problem we are discussing today: the challenge of adding unseen or rare items to the snatch list. Today, I deliver a solution to this problem. By the end of this tutorial, you will be able to add any item to your snatch list. If you're from a high population server, you've likely never encountered an uncached item.

Adding common items to the snatch list is relatively simple: drag an item to the snatch list UI, or use a link from trade or from the auction house. But what if you want to add a very rare item to your snatch list? In a perfect world, you could simply type in the name of the item. Unfortunately, Auctioneer requires a valid item link in order to register the item. Some alternatives come to mind:

1 - AtlasLoot or similar addons: These addons keep a small database of items dropped from instances and world bosses. Unfortunately, this database does not cover world drops.
2 - Linkerator: This addon substitutes itemlink code straight into chat interface. For example, if you typed "[Rugged Leather]", linkerator would inject itemlink code and you would then see . The shortfall of this addon is that you must have seen the item in-game for it to remember the itemlink code.
3 - WoWHead Links: These work for any server/player cached item. If the item is not player cached, you can still get a link. If the item is not server cached, the link will return nothing.

Using Linkerator, you could add some rare items without a problem. Odds are you've seen in trade before, so typing /snatch [Battered Hilt] 4500g should do the trick.

is a rare drop from Molten Core, often sought by enchanters. Let's assume you've never seen the item, but want to add it to your snatch list. You have no itemlink available, and no addons capable of producing said itemlink.

The only remaining alternative is to insert the raw itemlink code into Auctioneer's lua file, where all snatch list data is stored. This can be quite tedious, as any syntax error can produce errors. I've put together an excel program that will produce itemlink code, and throw it into proper syntax. All you have to do is paste this code into your Auc-Advanced.lua file. Let's get started.

    Step 1 - Setup

Close WoW. Navigate to the LUA file where all snatch list data is stored. It is located at World of Warcraft -> WTF -> Account -> (you account name) -> SavedVariables -> Auc-Advanced.lua.

Save a backup copy of the file. Name it intuitively. Open the original file and scroll down until you see this code:
    ["snatch.itemsList"] = {

Just under this line, you can see your current snatch list. We're going to add items here.

    Step 2 - Generate Code

Download the excel spreadsheet I have created.
For older versions of excel, download this one instead.

Open up WoWHead. Type in the item you wish to add to your snatch list. Here, we'll use . WoWHead will spit out the item's number in the address bar: http://www.wowhead.com/item=2955. In the excel spreadsheet, select 2 as quality (uncommon), type in the item's name, and enter the item number (2955). Enter the price threshold you wish to use. In my case, I used 750 gold.

The spreadsheet then spits out the raw code that we will paste into Auc-Advanced.lua:

    ["2955:0:0"]={["price"]=7500000,["link"]="|cff1eff00|Hitem:2955:0:0:0:0:0:0:0|h[First Mate Hat]|h|r",},

    Step 3 - Paste Code

Paste the code under ["snatch.itemsList"] = {. Don't worry about additional spaces or tabs, these are "invisible". Auctioneer will take care of properly aligning and ordering the list once you open WoW.

*MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP!*

Hit save, and close the LUA file. Open up WoW. The item should be in your snatch list!

In the rare event that your entire server has yet to see the item you are requesting, the WoW client may give you the boot. You'll have to delete the invalid item from the LUA file.

Is there an advantage to doing this as opposed to just using the item link directly from wowhead? For instance, if I wanted to do Primordial Saronite, I would visit wowhead and click on the "link" box and it would result with a popup box that gives you the script to link it in-game.

    /script DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage("\124cff0070dd\124Hitem:49908:0:0:0:0:0:0:0:0\124h[Primordial Saronite]\124h\124r");

You copy this and just enter it in-game and you have your item link.

Hmm, I thought the WoWhead links would cause the server to boot you for uncached items. But it's working. Closing thread, no need for this.

Edit: Nevermind, WoWhead links will not work on uncached items (the really rare ones).

The WoWhead links will only boot you if that item is uncached on your server. So, for example, if Shadowmourne hasn't been assembled yet on your server and you tried to link it, you would crash. If it's been loaded on your server, you'll be fine. At least that has been my understanding in the past.

I'm not sure, however, what the statute of limitations is on that, however. For example, after Tuesday maintenance, it's possible that items have to get loaded up again before they work.

There is a server cache, and your account cache. I'm not exactly sure which comes into play here.

The WoWhead links should suffice for 99% of your link needs. Very rare items (the ones you flip for several thousand gold) will not be linkable using the WoWhead method. Tested and confirmed. If you ever encounter this problem, use the excel spreadsheet.

For those of us that don't have Excel 2007 or higher, could you create a backward compatible version of your spreadsheet, that uses the .XLS extension? I only have Office 2003 right now (not dropping several hundred dollars to upgrade, just not worth it to me).

Or, if it works, put it out on Google Docs?

I spent about 30m last night trying to past in your glyph snatch list data into my Auc-Advance.lau file and wasnt successful. I am a programmer by day and understand syntax but that didnt help. I havent used the snatch feature before but I did create a test list/profile (called "Test") with one item in it for a reference. I dont have my Auc-Advance.lau in front me but I do remember seeing a current and Test "["snatch.itemsList"] = {" section. Since your glyph file included this line and the enclosing curly brace I removed them and inserted the contents of your file. I am obviously missing something so any help would be appreciated.

Did you find the test items in your lua file, or just the "test" snatch list?
Did you close WoW before doing any lua edits?
