I don't usually mind ads, so my vote is cast.

I think with the neutral BG and with the editorial style of the site, ads wouldn't really seem out of place - if that's what you're worried about. I guess the main concern would be ad relevance, IE. getting blasted with gold-selling ads or wow-crusher might be a bit off-putting , but I'm sure you'll have at least some measure of control over that, so I don't think it would be an issue.

On the flip side, a lot of people run ad blockers and won't whitelist you (I honestly can't figure out how to work my whitelist) so you won't get nearly as many hits as you think you will

With the increased competition (wowuction in particular), a switch from a paid service to ads is a good move.

Adsense is the easiest to set up and guarantees payment every month. The gaming niche is particularly brutal in terms of ad performance though, for example, we were running at 0.09% CTR and $0.58 CPC (all time). These numbers would be considered unacceptable by most advertisers (5% being a good target). You can't keep out the gold ads forever either, it can get tiresome. If you want more stats I can certainly help.

Ad blockers will block all ads from popular platforms (clickbank, adsense, amazon), so a better solution might be to shy away from those.

Best solution? Obviously ads for the goblineer's guide!

All kidding aside, I would seriously consider ads over service if I were you.

The other option would be to sell your own ad space and plop your own graphics/code in there.

I like the idea of free notifications, but i also dont like ad's that much.

In the end, you could put ad's with free notifications but have a limit on the notifications and then for cheap sell a little subscription or something that increases the amount of something.

    Just my input.
<J311yf1sh> im gonna stare really hard at it and hope it works

Going to be honest, I'd rather support the site with a couple of bucks every other month than cost you revenue because I block ads.

It would use Google's AdWords. They do have ad blacklisting if required.

Financially we're doing just fine right now. If we kept the status quo there would be no problem.

I block ads. I block the most common ad networks at the router so they don't get to any of my devices.

The reason I bring this up at all is because RealmPop has displayed ads for a while. It gets fewer hits than TUJ but I can make estimates based on what I get from there.

Again, financially, we're doing just fine the way things are today. Wowuction may collect auction statistics, but it has no influence whatsoever on decisions I make for TUJ. I don't consider it "competition", frankly. AHSpy was a competitor.

I use AdSense on RealmPop. My CTR is a bit better than that, but nowhere near 5%.

I can't be bothered to screen the editorial posts.. never mind screening ads myself, collecting money from advertisers, etc.. forget it.

That's an idea. It's also been suggested that I have a paid sub to remove the ads, but I don't think demand for that would be great enough to bother. But I'll consider your idea, there's something there.

    Thanks.

Good notes, all. Personally I'm not a fan of ads. I block `em and TUJ has been ad-free since its inception. However, people get upset that some things on the Internet cost money, and I've been looking at my AdSense stats on RealmPop and it tells me I may be able to support TUJ on ad revenue. So really I was looking to see what the community would rather: ads or payment. The poll will run for at least another week so I can get a better sense of what the community thinks.

If we decide to try ads, then we'll try them out for 2 weeks first. I'll add 2 weeks of paid sub time to every paid subscriber, then insert the ads and open up notifications to everyone. After the 2-week trial, if we decide to stick with ads for good, I would attempt to refund all paid subs that have over a month of paid time remaining. So if you're reading this and considering subbing/resubbing, don't be afraid, it wouldn't be money wasted.
