    Question Beginning Development...

pretty much off topic... but where would i get started in doing some armory / remote auction house scripting/datamining? I've been learning php, lua and some C.. and would love to apply what im learning to something that actually interests me.. like wow.. just not sure where to start, or finding some sample scripts...

You would get started by using google to find the relevant armory URLs that give XML/JSON, learn how to pull these, and learn how to use a parser library. If you really can't find those URLs or need some more detailed infos feel free to PM.

Open Source Armoury Scraper FTW !!!!
2-3 mins and what about bandwidth usage?

If TUJ is not soon going to provide eu realms an open source app that can post results to a webservice might be a viable option for EU users. Or not?

You can't just post them somewhere, you need a decent server for the database, I would provide some code however as a student I don't have the money to buy a decent database server. (The frontend and crawlers can run on cheap v-servers)

If you only want to scan the one realm for your personal use i see no reason to need a database server.
I was messing around parsing the html and it was a hassle but was shaping up, but then i found TUJ.

    +1

If there was an open source end-to end solution available for EU Realms a DB server could allways be a virtual server as well I dont think one would need a full stand alone DB server for one realms data if considering all realms this could become problimatic.

Depending on data structures required the data could allways be writen to either a .csv or other format file which people could download and use in their own data mining solutions.

Well one realm isn't useful to all of the EU players so you can't call that an EU solution.

Necessity is the mother of invention, as they say. What information do you want to pull from the armory? What interests you? Start small, learning how to pull a webpage from the armory and work with the data structure. Pull out the info you want. Save it somewhere. Run queries on it. Learning about databases and SQL would be very useful (and almost required, imo) if you're interested in this stuff. SQL's pretty easy to pick up, and you can use it almost anywhere. Throw mysql and phpMySQL on a linux box and play with it.

The Armory lately isn't very friendly to those interested in datamining, but Blizzard is working on some neat stuff. If you've got databases figured out and want to play with some APIs, look at the Twitter, Facebook or LiveJournal APIs for practice.
