Cool Did you take time off for Cata?

and if so, do people think you’re crazy?

Yesterday I was in a project planning meeting with the executive staff of my company (CEO, COO, ect) and toward the end of the meeting my COO announced that I was on Vacation next week. After the heart-attack of knowing I would not be available they were curious about where I was going.

Normally I travel, so when I said I was staying home they were instantly curious. Then I told them I was staying home to play a video game, World of Warcraft.

After explaining wow and explaining what an expansion means, I am now the official crazy person of my company - taking time off to play a video game

Still makes me happy, anyone else have similar stories?

I had a guild mate that put in for time off and said he was traveling, when ask where he said Northren (this was for WotLK).

My birthday is the 10th, so I'll probably take that day off. But I can't take the whole week off I thought about taking off Tuesday but I don't want to risk wasting a day if they are having server issues.

I had initially penciled in vacation time for next week but decided to roll over this year's balance for daughter's surgery early next year. Wife and I will probably put off getting expansion until next year. Cataclysm can wait, RL can't.

4.0.3a is already awesome and we can already roll the new class combos. This would make a nice play buffer until Cataclysm is ready for us.

It has definitely become the norm to take time off from work or to specifically schedule your daily life around those few days during/after the release of an expansion, especially when doing so can help you gain a huge advantage.

Yes from an outsider's point of view this may seem a little odd, but that's your business not theirs. They don't need to know what / why you are taking time off, and if your boss does then surely he will respect your reasoning. From a wow player's point of view, especially people within a community like ours here at the Consortium, we understand how crucial it can be to gain that advantage or simply how much it means.

Most of the time you take vacation / leave from work to do something you enjoy. Some people use that time to travel, some use it to relax, some use it to spend quality time with their family. Here, we can actually do all three at the same time! Travel and explore the new content in World of Warcraft, relax (yes come one, who hasn't got home from a busy day and sat down at their PC to login to wow and let out that sigh of relief, satisfaction and relaxation, similar to opening an ice cold beer on a scorching hot day!) and possibly explore it all together with your family or love ones.

For me, I have the entire December off (I'm 19 and only start full time studies again in January and have no need for a job at the moment). I've been planning this big, huge 48 hour wow marathon for Cataclysm's release. But hey guess what, I won't be doing that anymore. Turns out my mother is going in for a knee replacement operation on the 6th of December so I will be spending pretty much the entire 7th, 8th and 9th with her at the hospital. Doctors say she will hopefully come home on Friday and then I'm on full time nanny/nurse duty for her for the next few weeks.

Oh well as much as I regret the horrible timing, family does come first and I would never hesitate in deciding whether or not to choose her over WoW. Even if I'm not needed to be with her all that time, it won't stop me from doing so.

It will be good in a way I guess, I will probably just roll a Worgen casually in the small amount of free time that I have, and let my level 80s rack up a bit of rested xp (since it's being reset before Cata comes out). Then later because I will be so far behind everyone else I won't feel too bad leveling slowly and simply enjoying the new content properly actually reading the quests, not being bothered with over crowding etc.

I just don't have enough vacation days to burn. Between getting hitched this year and the holidays, I'm tapped out. And there is the little matter of my wife might actually kill me if I did so. I did manage to talk my way out of the class I had. I guess having 98% average and knowing your lowest grade gets dropped swayed that decision as well.

Time off for Cata is certainly happening. December is already the month when my workplace is missing a large number of people, so there is certainly no conflict there. I've got a floating holiday and a boatload of vacation time. It's going to be a good week.

Yes! 7-10th off. I was actually forced to take time off because of all the vacation days I've accumulated, so this seemed like a good opportunity.

Hahaha brilliant. I suspect this could work with Cataclysm too:

"Going on a ski trip to Mt Hyjal".
"Going to Vash'ir, United Arab Emirates".
"Going to kill Deathwing, a giant dragon" (ok maybe not)

When I'm celebrating my own birthday on the 10th, I'll drink a beer for you!

I'll have to wait for the week between Xmas and New Years, as we have that off (apart from being on-call). My boss is taking the week (and a day) before that off, largely to play WoW. So no, not really, I don't have the vacation stored up. I might take a day or so.
