Hate the class but love the character

Something that is really bugging me at the moment is deciding which character I want to be my main. I've never really in the past been very interested in long term grinds and what not, so have always changed classes and characters without much thought.

Lately I have found myself being drawn to the more collectors and achievements side of World of Warcraft instead of just going with the flow and it's something that I want to focus on in Cataclysm.

I'm currently leveling my old level 70 warrior to 80 (level 76 at the moment) so that it can be my main in Cataclysm. I absolutely adore the character, it was the character that I cleared Sunwell with at 70 because that was what my guild needed and I found it easier to raid lead as a tank. I have legendaries, I have titles, I have reputation and achievements, pretty much more of everything on my level 70 than I do have on any of my level 80s.

The problem is I just find I simply do not enjoy warrior mechanics anymore. I never really did like them but I got by. I detest the way their DPS works - I always think to myself if I wanted a melee dps I would rather play a pala, dk or rogue over them.
I enjoy tanking and admittedly warrior tanking isn't that bad either, but again I would rather tank as a paladin if I was going to tank something.

I know that common sense is telling me to play a class that I will enjoy and not get bored of in the future, but for some reason it's not enough reason.

    What do you guys think?

If your warrior is the toon with all your titles and phat lewts I would keep him as your main. Use him for your achievements and whatnot. You can always level other characters and play other characters. Just make sure if you are going to work for a title or achievement you are using your warrior.

In Vanilla/BC my main was my warrior. I stopped playing him when WOTLK came out and I leveled my Mage that became my new main. I loved the mage and everything about it, and still do. My mage has all my mounts (over 105), all my pets (over 120) and all of my achievements/titles etc. I will probably keep him as my main come Cataclysm. However recently I've been focusing on my warrior. I've been grinding heroics to get him in his tier 10 and all of the badge gear. I'm finding that I really love the warrior and missed playing him. He is a DPS machine. So this time around I'm going to keep my mage as my main toon, but I'm not going to neglect my warrior like I did before.

My warrior also has my Amani War Bear, I really wish I could transfer that to my mage.

I understand your predicament. I rolled a priest back in classic and a newbie to WoW in 2005, rolled a mage for DPS as I do not enjoy to a certain degree the whack-a-mole raid healer role (insert guild raid role drama here), then rolled a death knight to learn its mechanics (& way OP since WoLK day 1) and learning how to tank. Being said, deciding your main(s) is like trying to balance between a long list of situations.

See my blog for today about choosing your main come Catalysm.

I think its funny, that all these posts revolve around a warrior.

I too have a warrior, that's been played between 60 and 80, in Uldular. When we killed Yogg, I retired my warrior, with achievements, titles, PVP titles, and a massive /played. And started playing my shaman. LOVE the shaman. Enjoy the Shaman. Drop totems on my Shaman.
But I keep flirting with the idea of going back to my warrior, mainly for all the "old stuff".

Honestly, I think you MUST enjoy the warrior on some level. While I understand the "grass is greener", how have you felt while leveling the warrior.
The class HAS changed a lot, since you and I both shelved our warriors. It's changing more for Cata as well.

Spend some time getting to know the PLAYSTYLE again, and make your decision based on that. What do YOU have fun playing?

    I think this is BLASPHEMY!!!

Seriously though, most people in this game switch main at some point. I started as a hunter (my first 60) and originally played the warrior to be a twink. I couldn't stop leveling, however. Now everything is on my warrior and that will be my main in Cataclysm, without a doubt. I think you should at least get to 80 and play around with the class for a bit before deciding you definitely don't like the mechanics. The new stuff is a blast for fury. I am demolishing things like I have never done before. Victory Rush heals for 14k.

Also, remember that the mechanics are just guidelines and with the way the game changes, they are only temporary anyway. When I first started playing the warrior, the conventional wisdom said that "the warrior is slow to play because you need to sit and eat frequently." Bullocks, says I. I used dual lifesteal enchants, as well as any other self-healing items I could find. Pair that with bloodthirst and I never, ever stopped to eat. Now that's the expectation for all classes.

Ultimately, I think one thing that would help immensely with this would be if Blizzard made a lot more things shared across an account and BOA. But, that's a discussion for another thread. Give the warrior a chance but play what you enjoy.

I feel that. I rerolled Prot Paladin at this time last year and am in love with the class and the character. This was my former bank alt that I rolled just out of boredom and it became my new main. I had played hunter for a long, long time and was damned good at it. I have spent the past year knocking out achievements trying to outdo my old main. My hunter is still one of the top in my old guild for achievement scores, even though I haven't done a damned thing with her since October 2009, and she's at around 8k.

It is was it is. I'd pick a role and move forward with that. If you enjoy DPS, it's an arms race to stay competitive. If tanking, you have no problem getting loot and your only concern is building massive threat. If it's a healer, then you get blamed for everything. Just make sure you enjoy your role or otherwise you become one of those people that keep playing but should think about moving on. Don't join guilds where you're asked to do something you hate just to raid.

I have recently decided to do a total reroll of my first character, a shaman, who i have a special little place for in my [gaming] heart but i just don't seem to enjoy playing him anymore. He was my first 60, my first 70 and i tried to drag him up to 80 but haven't got past 73, so i have decided to reroll him as a gobbo to hopefully bring some spark back into playing him.

There's no point sticking with a character you no longer enjoy no matter what achievements, items, etc it has unless your that shallow that such things mean more to you than enjoying the game.
Old achievements are generally not that hard to replace or regain with a new character. The incoming achievements will require a lot of effort and you will be even more depressed if you put in that effort then decide you really don't enjoy your warrior and wish you had stuck with another character.

On a final note, i would ask is it really the class you hate or are you simply bored of Northrend now?
For me, with my shaman, it is largely to do with i am sick of leveling in Northrend now. I have a profession alt i am slowly dragging through Northrend because he needs to be 80 and that is a hard task in itself.
The rest of the reason is i enjoy playing him in general but not in a serious environment. I feel better playing my other characters in a PvP or PvE environment, depending on which it is.

I've originally played a rogue up to when I finished Ulduar, and afterwards I've managed my guild to let me raid on my warr, stuck with it every since, and it will continue to be my main in Cata.
    Insta-queue is so sweet.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys. Decided I'm going to get my warrior up to 80 and farm a full set of tier 10 / badge vendor loot via heroics while taking turns queuing as different specs and then go from there.

I think you are making the right choice. Grinding heroics will give you a better feel for the class changes, plus you can get some good loot. If you go Fury I would suggest doing PVP to get enough honor to purchase two s. They are the best weapons you can get outside of ICC raiding. I just reforged them to lower the Resilience and gave it more Hit.
