    Contest time everyone

It's been far too long since we held our last contest, so we're hoping that this might lead to a more frequent schedule as well. Enter "the Great Stormspire Scavenger Hunt".

    OVERVIEW

Given the way this community has grown and developed over the past year or so, and in light of how diverse our member/reader base has become, we wanted to find a competition that was:

    a) Fun. Should be obvious.
    b) Flexible. Everyone has their own unique experiences and preferences, so we didn't want to force people to do things a particular way and you should find that this contest is fairly open-ended.
    c) Fair. Everyone will start from exactly the same place, and will be given an equal opportunity to compete.
    d) Challenging. This won't be a cake walk, so make sure you sharpen your skills leading up to it.

    THE HUNT

Goblins, your mission is simple. You will be divided into 2 groups (1 US and 1 EU) and will all be competing on the same server (per region). We have prepared a list of 30 of some of the rarest and most valuable commodities in all Azeroth. Your mission is to acquire as many as you can BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY. Acceptable methods of acquisition include:

    -Farming them yourself
    -"Snatching" them
-Accumulating gold via other means to be able to purchase them at a "regular" price.
-Paying someone else to farm them for you
    -Trading items with other contestants
-Hacking the other contestants' accounts and sending them over to yourself...just kidding

    THE LIST

    SCORING

Prizes will be distributed based on a Points system. Each recipe will be worth a single point, but they will also be randomly allocated on a per-person basis into 3 groups, and then 2 further sub groups. Acquiring an entire sub-group will award bonus points, and completing a full group will earn you even more. While it is very unlikely that anyone will be able to get their hands on all 30, such an unprecedented accomplishment will obviously receive the largest bonus. Here's an example of how this might work.

    POINTS
Each individual item is worth 1 point, regardless of which group it is in and whether or not you end up completing the group.

Completing a sub-group (all 5 items) will earn you 6 points (5 items +1 bonus)

Completing a Group (all 10 items from both sub-groups) will earn you 20 points. This means that completing a Group will still be more advantageous than completing 3 sub-groups on their own. Plan accordingly.

If you somehow manage the implausible feat of collecting all 30 items, after successfully passing a detailed audit , you will receive 75 points.

In order to score a point, you must trade the item to one of the Contest Judges. All items received will be collected and redistributed for the second phase of the contest.

    THE SALE
After the first phase has ended, and depending on the number of items collected, we will be evenly distributing the items amongst all contestants for you to try to sell. Items MUST be sold before the deadline for the second phase ends, so make sure to price accordingly.

Items can either be sold through the AH, COD, or via direct trade. If you sell the item through the AH, we will accept a screenshot of your TSM_Accounting, MySales data and/or of the Auctions Tab with item sold. AH sales will be corroborated through API data/TUJ. In the event of any discrepancy, try to use as many sources of data as possible to be safe.

For COD, please get a screenshot of the mail to be sent, and then of whichever tracking addon you use for mail. MailOpener is recommended, but we won't force you to use some mail addon against your will. Just make sure your addon has a substantial enough record log and/or disable auto-opening so that you can get a screenshot.

For direct trades, it is preferred that you contact one of the judges beforehand so that we can be present to witness the trade. We will all make toons on the contest server, so be sure to add us to your friend list so you can send us a mail or PST. You can also try a PM or IRC to try and catch us. If for whatever reason, we aren't around, and you've got a sale lined up, make sure to take as many screenshots as possible (trade window, trade log for loot received, etc.)

    THE JOURNEY
Similarly to our last contest, we would like to give participants the opportunity to score points based on their ability to entertain us with their particular adventure.

In order to facilitate this, we will be using the new Blogging Platform that @Sterling implemented not too long ago. You can create your own blog entry simply by going to Blogs->Official stormspire.net blogs, and then clicking on "Create New Post" on the right. If you would like for your blog entries to remain private, simply go to your "settings" page and click on the "Blog" link from the left-side navigation (it should be the last one). Then disable any of the checkboxes that relate to visibility and you're all set.

Points will be given subjectively by a panel of judges, so we would encourage you to be as descriptive and creative as possible. Additional media (images, videos, etc.) are highly encouraged, but not necessary. If you weave us a fascinating story, we'll make sure it is appropriately rewarded.

    GROUND RULES
    - Fair gameplay is expected. We will be monitoring the contest both in-game and outside of it, and if anyone is found to be engaging in inappropriate or dishonest activity, they will be subject to penalty and/or disqualification. If you are unsure about anything, ASK! I don't expect we'll have an issue with this, but now it's in there just in case.

    TIMEFRAME
If you would like to participate in this contest, all you need to do is reply to this thread with your region (US or EU). Registration will be closed on May 1, 11:59PM (GMT-5) to allow us to formulate the randomized groups and get everything in order.

The contest will officially begin on May 3, 12:01AM (GMT -4). A reply to this thread will be made at that time with the location of your server. The first phase of the contest will run for 6 weeks and results will be closed on June 11, 11:59PM (GMT-4). The second phase will begin on June 14, 12:01 Am (GMT-4) and will run for 3 weeks, ending on July 4, 11:59PM (GMT-4). Journal entries will be accepted for an additional week beyond that, and will be closed on July 11, 11:59PM (GMT-4).

    PRIZES
3rd Prize: Any TCG loot or Blizz store swag of your choice, valued up to $45.
2nd Prize: Any gaming gear of your choice, valued up to $75 - not including tax and shipping.
1st Prize: Any gaming gear of your choice, valued up to $130 - not including tax and shipping.

The top 10 contestants will also receive complimentary Ethereal Contributor status for 6 months. (6 additional months for existing Ethereal Contributors)

That's it. If you have any questions, post a reply here, hop in IRC, or send us a PM.

    Enjoy the Hunt!

Over the lifespan of TradeSkillMaster, we have constantly been working to ensure the addon is not used in conjunction with automation programs (aka bots). In the beta version, we had the random number entry in the Auctioning module. When it was time to create the release version, we structured the code in such a way as to deter those who may wish to modify it. ...

As discussed a couple days ago, Stormspire.net is getting its very own blogging platform.

For now, blog posting is open to users ranked Entrepreneur and higher. If you’re still a wee Apprentice, stick around and your rank will be upgraded automatically.

The VBulletin blogging platform is very powerful. It is seamlessly integrated with the forums and CMS. This means we can track and display blogging stats across the entire site. We can add stats in user profiles or postbits (under your avatar) and place widgets in the forum area or front-page. This kins of exposure will assure that blogs don't go unnoticed.

I'll try to address the main concerns that have come up so far about the blogging platform.

    1. I'm just a small-time blogger, will high-profile bloggers overshadow my contributions?

There was some concern about small-time bloggers not getting credit for their contributions. Worry not, we have a system in place to assure outstanding contributions their minute of fame. Blog posts can be “front-paged”, just like threads. We can also “sticky” or “feature” blog posts locally in the blogging section. I believe these two measures ensure small timers the attention they deserve!

As a side note, the primary sorting criteria for blogs are Most Popular and Best Blogs. Most Popular sorts blogs by number of subscribed readers, while Best Blogs sorts by overall user rating. Even if you blog once or twice a month, quality should generally trump quantity.

    2. Main Features

The blogs section can be accessed via the navbar menu. Don't worry about the duplicate links there. I'll take care of that soon.

For readers: The interface is straightforward. It offers the same sorting features you would expect in any blogging platform; date, time, blogger, rating, etc.

For bloggers: You may edit your settings here.

Keep in mind; you may not see all of the settings below depending on your forum rank. We may also enable/disable them as we see fit. Here’s a quick rundown of the settings:

    • Edit title and description: This is the name of your blog. For example, Stede’s blog is Venture, LLT. The description box gives readers an idea of what your blog is about. Both of these options can be left blank.
    • Customize Blog Style: This is the look and feel of your blog. Probably best to leave this alone.
    • Organize sidebar: Allows you to re-organize the blocks seen in your blog.
    • Permissions and Privacy: Allows you to set viewing permissions for your blog.
    • Blog Statistics: Allows you to view various statistics about your blog. I’m still unsure what data will show here.
    • Manage Groups: Want to write a blog collaboratively? This is the setting for you. Here, you can invite people to your blog.

Wind Traders and Add-on Developers may create their own blog categories.

    3. Blogging Rules

    • The blogs section is a place to record your thoughts. Examples of suitable blog posts:
      • Personal journal of adventures through a new game, expansion, etc.
      • Progress logs for a newbie goblin.
      • Development musings, whether you’re working on an add-on, a game, a site, or even a car.
      • Your thoughts on a game, its current state or where it’s headed.
      • Place to rant off-topic.

    • Before making a blog post, consider making a thread instead. Often, forum threads are better suited for things like guides, and gold-making strategies. This also makes the information easier to find.
    • No spamming. Users will be limited to a few posts a week, or as staff sees fit. If you have nothing to say, don’t post! Visitors should be able to find pertinent information when visiting the blogs section, not spam!
    • You may not use the blogging platform to promote your own blog/site unless you are an established member of this community. This will be enforced.
      • Wind Traders, Add-on developers and Ethereal Contributors may place one (1) link in their blog posts (“as seen on”, “brought to you by”, etc.).
      • This is our way of giving back to users that have contributed infinitely to the site.
      • Do not post partial “sneak peak” excerpts. All posts in the above category should be full-length.

    4. Considering moving your blog here?

If you’re considering moving your external blog here, please understand the SEO implications. Stormspire.net has a higher search engine authority than most blogs. What does this mean? Well, if you move content from your personal blog to stormspire.net, you risk de-indexing your personal blog from search engines. This is Google’s way of combating duplicate content.

You’re free to re-use content from your personal blog as you please.

    5. About shared revenue

Several users have asked how I plan on implementing shared revenue for blogs. I’m not sure yet. I’ll do my best to provide bloggers with customizable advertising options. Please; do not start a blog with the sole intent of advertising. This breaks the spirit of blogging and I can’t guarantee to have the ad system up any time soon.

I would like to take a moment to let you guys know what we have in store for Stormspire.net and the community in general. In the past few months, a ton of work has been done in terms of site infrastructure and backend optimization. With that out of the way, we can start focusing on new and exciting front-end features. Remember that none of these implementations are set in stone yet. I value community feedback. It has vastly influenced the development of this site from day one and that will never change. If you think a feature should be released in one way or another (or not at all), let me know, your opinion matters!

    1. Full Steam Ahead With Diablo 3

A large portion of this community will migrate to Diablo 3 once the game is released. I think it's in our best interest to provide Diablo 3 players with a good home. That said, Stormspire.net will become a WoW/D3 site primarily. More subforums will be added to the Diablo 3 section and we'll probably integrate some features for that game specifically. In terms of the site's look, expect to see a Diablo 3 themed skin in the near future.

Oh, and in case you're wondering, there will be a Diablo 3 Wind Trader equivalent. We're just not sure what to call you guys yet.

    2. Video Library

This feature will allow users to submit, view, rate, and comment on videos. This section will be seamlessly integrated with the rest of the site. More details to come.

    3. Blogging Platform

With Mists of Pandaria and Diablo 3 on the horizon, and a more robust blogging integration in VBulletin 4.1.11, I've decided it's about time to enable this feature. Without divulging too much information, here's the jist of it:

    • The blogging platform will give users the ability to maintain a "journal" of sorts of their adventures (or any topic, really).
    • This platform is seamlessly integrated with VBulletin, meaning we can track blogging statistics for all users.
    • Blog posts can be promoted to front-page articles. This is a great way of rewarding top contributors.
    • Since some bloggers enjoy passive income from Ads, I'm strongly considering allowing bloggers to place their own ads on their own blog. I haven't looked into revenue sharing (this site would need to be approved), so don't get too excited just yet.

    4. New Navbar Menu (finally!)

This has been in the works for a really long time. VBulletin offers very little where navbar menu customization is concerned, so I went ahead and coded one myself. It's almost ready and I think you will like it!

    5. The Bad News: Discontinued support for the Ethereal skin.

It's with a heavy heart that I announce this, but we won't be supporting the Ethereal skin going forward. This skin is a heavily customized version of the Goblin theme, and requires a lot of attention whenever a new version of VBulletin is released. Its glory was short lived, and may it rest peacefully in VBulletin skin heaven.

Somehow good ol' Retro still works quite well. Things were just built better back in the day, right?

    ---

I look forward to your feedback!
