  • Mini-Guide: Legion Cooking

I quickly realized a couple things about cooking in Legion. First, obtaining the new cooking recipes is a convoluted PITA. The mechanisms by which they're obtained are either grindy or obscure enough to turn off the average player from obtaining them. Secondly, demand for consumables has never been higher, in part due to the popularity of Mythics and the accessibility of raiding content for all players. This is a perfect combination for goblins; a market with a barrier of entry, and healthy demand for those inside.

If you're like me, most of your character have never trained or leveled cooking seriously. Luckily for you, a cooking skill level of 1 is sufficient to make some profits right out of the gate.

That's not to say you can walk straight into this market. There are 21 new cooking recipes in Legion, about 19 of which are worth learning.

You will need to learn 6 recipes right off the bat in order to progress with Nomi, the cooking NPC.

    Reward from: I'm Not Lion!
    Reward from: Morale Booster
    Reward from: Shriek No More
Reward from: The Magister of Mixology
    Reward from: A Heavy Burden
Reward from: Murlocs: The Next Generation

Once you've unlocked Nomi, you can start queuing up Work Orders. We'll get to that later. By the way, WoWhead's cooking guide is pretty thorough, but perhaps slightly out-of-scope for our interests.

Next, go after the remaining recipes. Follow WoWhead's guide for instructions on how to obtain them.

    Nomi and Work Orders

    The remaining 8 recipes and all rank 2 to 3 versions of the recipes above are discovered with Nomi Work Orders;

What are Nomi Work Orders and how do they work? That's the convoluted part.

These Work Orders function like any garrison work order. Resource in, product out. In this case, you give Nomi ingredients, he experiments with them, and produces either or a recipe. The recipe produced depends on the ingredient you give him.

For example, if you queue up Work Orders with , you'll have a chance to discover a higher rank of or , since both of these recipes require Wildfowl Egg.

It's a good idea to mix up the type of food you give Nomi, since he can produce duplicate recipes if you feed him too much of one thing. It's happened to me 3-4 times already.

Now, it can be hard to track which ingredients will yield the best results. That's where the addon Nomicakes comes in. This addon quite simply "displays how many recipes are learnable from each ingredient on Nomi's work order options, and how many of that ingredient you have in your inventory".

    TSM Setup

The TSM setup for cooking is straightforward. The import string below will give you my entire setup, from groups to operations.

And that's it! I've only started selling cooked goods yesterday and the results have been phenomenal. With more rank 3 recipes unlocked, cooking should yield about 40k/day.

How about some day 1 results?

23,000g in sales and I'm maybe 20% done collecting/ranking recipes.

7.1 isn't a new tier, it doesn't even have a full raid, so I'm 99% sure that won't be going away until nighthold or even later. Might as well take advantage of the market though if it thinks it is going away.

@morfraen 7.1 does bring a new raid, with Odyn and Helga. It comes 2 weeks after, I think.

On my server, even with lvl3 recipes, most crafts are at most 1-2g profit.

By now almost all consumables on the AH cost just a fraction above crafting cost with lvl3 recipes, or below that in case of alchemy proc'able consumables...

on my server it is almost the same, though try to focus on the bit more rare recipe's. i just farmed surumar turf in like 15 min. (got lucky right after with rank 2 for it) and that one is now getting me profit of 22g per craft. cant wait for rank 3.
But the others are still not worth it with low ranks......

ps. is cooking skill in anyway relevant for this? my cooking was lvl 1 (ashamed) but i can create all legion stuff, is it worth to invest to get a higher lvl or doesnt it matter for now?

Indeed. All that matters is that players think AotC won't be obtainable Tuesday. My guild message claims that's the case, and based on the number of pugs running for it, lots of players are on that train. I got mine last night, and about 3/4 of the raid got the achievement when we downed Xavius.

I don't think so. You get the bacon WQ at skill 100 (or so), but that's it. I haven't noticed anything yet, but I'll confirm if I see anything change at 700+.

AWESOME guide @Sterling - but my issue is the failure rate that Nomi returns the goods at. I dont have an exact number but I have over 100 failures (burnt food) and I 9ony have 2 recipes to show for it.
Am I missing something to increase the chance of success? My toon that is cooking is like 750ish (cant remember the exact number)
      Any advice would be appreciated.
      Thanks

wow thats a really bad rate!

i think i gave nomi 20 jobs total now and got total 3 recipies now! (1 rank 2 and 2 new recipies)
i dont think it's related to skill as my cooking was lvl 1 when i started, and now is around 100/150

@AHgoldfarmer2015 @fjux it's all luck. I discovered 3 recipes right off the bat, then nothing for a few days, then I left for a week and came back to 5-6 new recipes. What's devastating is that I've had duplicates maybe 4 or 5 times.

Use nomicakes and make sure you're putting work orders in on food that can actually get you recipes, I was wasting some where I was still missing a quest recipe that blocked other discoveries.

Another annoying thing with the cooking is TSM intermediate crafting, it doesnt work. so tsm gathering tries to get you to buy food which you could make instead. it makes maganing your crafting queue a real pain. but its worth it imo.

damn my sales skyrocketed since 7.1!

Also the prices for 375 food went up like crazy, probably because some people on my server a completly destroying the market for the ingedients (like fatty bearsteak)
suddenly they cost 50g/piece instead of 1g.

Luckily i had enough stock of them already. so my crafting costs were still low, but the prices of food doubled.
was a fun few days, but the market got stable(ish) again now.

This really is a great income source!

Seems to me like the opposite of destroying?

Lots of weirdo things happening, yesterday I couldn't find Leyblood at the AH. Might be time to get used to new prices on a few things.

I forgot to check here for a couple of months as I've been having so much fun selling cooking goods. I can certainly vouch for it still being a good income. I have a lot of problems hindering me in doing dungeons which I'm not going to bother going into here, so most of my alts still have their professions gated behind dungeon quests. I did my usual foray into cooking at about the same time as this guide and found myself selling so much that I didn't worry about the other professions for a while. There are a few other things I'm selling at the moment, but the majority is food. Then the first week of January, my server went into overload on buying food...

In that time I also sold a jeweled panther, and some saber's eye gems, but at least 75% of that 1 mill profit in a week was due to cooking food. I have no idea what sudden bizarre thing happened on my server that week, but I'm not complaining. I usually make a bout a 5th of that in a week.

Thank you so much for the Nomicakes addon recommendation though. I had missed that and you've just made a tedious job so much easier.
