  • Stormspire.net Mists of Pandaria Guide Contest!

I'm pleased to announce the Stormspire.net Mists of Pandaria Guide Contest!

The contest is funded by our Goblineer's WoW Gold Guide / Premium Membership so be sure to check it out!

To enter the contest, create and submit a guide to the Contest Entries forum. We're leaving this one wide open, so your entry can cover almost anything, so long as it has some relation to World of Warcraft! You may submit your entry now, or wait until Mists of Pandaria officially launches. You will have a full month to write up a guide after the launch.

The contest will feature our best prizes yet, so don't miss out! First prize already announced (scroll down).

    Bonus TSM Category:

Sapu is graciously offering a bonus prize for the guide which best utilizes TradeSkillMaster in a unique or especially effective manner. You can win this prize by integrating TSM into your guide, or by writing purely about your use of TSM (see Reverb's Enchanting + TSM Guide). The winner of this prize will be chosen by Sapu himself.

    Rules:
    • Don't steal content. All entries must be original. Stolen or otherwise plagiarized content will be removed and the user permanently banned from the site.
    • All entries must be in line with site rules. Use common sense.
    • You must post your guide in the Contest Entries forum where only you may see your entry until the contest ends!
    • You're encouraged to post a "work in progress" in the entries forum, and edit and add content from there.
    • Contest deadline ~October 25th (1 month following Mists of Pandaria launch).

    Judging & Scoring Criteria:
    • Site staff and non-competing Wind Traders will vote on their favorite guide.
    • Use images and/or videos to add flavor! I recommend imgur.com for image hosting.
    • Scoring criteria:
      • Was the entry useful?
      • Was the entry comprehensive?
      • Does the entry have visual appeal?
      • Is the entry well-formatted and easy to follow?
      • Is the entry unique?

    • Bonus points:
      • Humor!
      • Timeless guides: will your guide be useful in 2 years or will it be outdated within a month?
      • Targeted: we're giving a slight bonus to guides that are particularly useful to the site's audience (goblineers).

    Prizes:
    • TSM Category Prize: Gold Farming Mug!

    • 2nd & 3rd Prize: $75 and $50 (respectively) to be spent at a Blizzard Store near you! Can be used on anything, included the awesome heart of the aspects mount!

    • 1st prize: your very own Kresky figurine! Made of solid gold, capitalism and greed! Tablecloth not included. Click the following links to see larger versions of the thumbnails (1,2,3,4,5).

Great! Good to see something like this as encouragement to get people writing up stuff for MoP! There's lots of bits and pieces all over this site and other sites, so having stuff that's consolidated and well written will help clear up a lot of questions.

Just want to make sure, but, I can submit a guide I have already written up in the past, right? It's absolutely for MoP, and isn't JUST for goblineers, but does appeal to them. It's my PokeMoP guide. Still a WIP atm, but it would be perfect for this contest!

Absolutely! If the content is your own, you're welcome to use/update that information.

Looking forward to it. I think Mithrildar and I will submit our collaborative work on the shuffle.

Alright, if you'd like to have threads moved temporarily while you work on them or make improvements, let me know.

      Sounds like fun!

[e] I've actually had a guide in the making for a week now so this is perfect for that.

Love the idea, I'm a competitor at heart, so this speaks to me.

Is anyone else concerned that information helpful to the community as a whole may be withheld as people hold on to it to include in a post specifically for this contest? I'd be less concerned if the deadline were closer to the release, but since it's about a month post-launch, I can see a bit of this happening.

I could see that happening, but it goes both ways: I think the contest will give many people incentive to finally write "that guide" they had in mind for a while (or add to a current guide).

Is it the idea that these guides get added to the Mists of Pandaria of the Goblineer Gold Guide? If so is there some way we can include spreadsheets in our guides, can we link to download page?

I'm more concerned about the competition !!! @Stede @Mithrildar and @TimB wow this is going to be tough
Going to be interesting to see what everyone comes up with, and personally it sounds like a nice challenge to work towards

Most of these guides will probably go into the Quality Guides section (others will go into appropriate forums like Addons). I don't think any of them will end up in the gold guide. That wouldn't be in good spirit.

You can attach spreadsheets to any post/thread, so long as it's within the 2MB size threshold (plenty, unless you accidentally attach an import).

      Don't forget me! I'll be submitting a non-competing entry.

While yes i can see some of these topics being withheld, I would see it more as a result of not wanting competition in the AH than not wanting competition on the guide. If you want to post something on the forum as a helpful topic, it's your original idea, and well... it's really really hard to plagiarize yourself if you want to draw it out into a longer guide esq post for the contest. Or at least that's the way I'm looking at it.

Also as a side note, not that i really plan on doing something like this. But can we reference other peoples ideas and blend them together into an all inclusive guide, with proper credit and such of course being given. An example would be to include other peoples maps, or video overviews of addon setups or some such, just so we don't have to start from scratch with everything and reinvent the wheel. Say i want to do a guide on using TSM for something specific, would I also have to write from scratch a portion of the guide exlaining how to use TSM, or could i just include links to sapu's guides that are already written.

Well I kind of see it like this. Let's say I have a really efficient way of leveling my battle pets and write up a guide for it. I can do one of two things: 1) I save it for myself until the end of the contest or 2) I post it early to share with the community, but run the risk of someone upstaging me because they've already seen what I've posted.

But as @Sterling said, this also may be the encouragement someone needs to put their guide out there, which otherwise may not have been shared. I already have a few things in progress, but there are a lot of good posters out there to compete with.

@Mac, don't think of it as a competition. Instead, approach this contest by making a quality guide that you would be proud of and that you think a lot of people would benefit from. That's the underlying intent of this contest, really, is to get some good guides written up. So instead of Sterling demanding them or hoping people get some initiative to do so, he is making this contest as a way to light that fire under our butts to get some stuff together for MoP.

Sure, those of us who have contributed good write ups in the past might have a slight advantage, but you still have, what, 2 months to get a guide written up? Should be fun, and I'm really looking forward to the polished and rich guides that will be a result of this contest, winners or not. Gives everyone fresh stuff to use and resource from once MoP hits.

SO THIS IS WHAT KRESKY IS FOR!

      ...sorry...i'm ok...

EDIT: Back on topic, as Sterling said, I will be giving out an awesome prize (TBA in original post soon) for the entry which best utilizes TradeSkillMaster in a unique or especially effective manner. Of course, all the rules of the competition still apply and this the winner of this prize will likely also be a strong contender in the overall contest (ie don't JUST go for this prize - it won't work).

The concern that I have intimidating me is not so much the quality of the people writing the guides, we all know they're amazing anyways.
Its the topics that are overwhelming. One of the Main points of the guide is Original Material, so you don't tread where others are sure to go.

I know Stede and Mith have mentioned a Shuffle based guide, though I hope that one comes out sooner rather than later. Tim's pet guide as well.

I will try to find a topic, I will write something. I just cant wrap my head around the subject as of yet. /ponder (dang, blue mana all tapped out)

There's always something to write about - try focusing on a simple topic rather than thinking broadly. MMO Champion held a guide contest, and the winning guide explained how to complete a quest!

      Question:

I want to work together with @Stede on this. Is there some way we can create a topic we can both view and/or edit?

But if you two collaborate , you have to cut up the prize and send half to each right?
