    Profitable Leveling Guide: Alchemy 1-525

This guide shows how to level alchemy from 1-525 in the most profitable manner. The strategy is to craft nothing but profitable recipes, and to fall back to the cheapest crafts when no profitable recipes are available for skilling up. This guide assumes you are part of a level 14+ guild for the Working Overtime perk.

I suggest stocking up early on all of the required materials, some are hard to come by!

At level 68 (325 skill minimum) you may unlock Master of Transmutation, which allows your transmutes to yield ~20% more. The quest requires 4 Primal Might and starts at this NPC.

Here's a very general shopping list. If you can't find every material here, don't worry, some are hard to come by (Volatile Rum, for example).

    The Grind

The level range shown below is the range in which you can craft the item. The multiplier is the number of that item I recommend crafting. Yes, there is an overlap between level ranges!

Using Swiftness Potion as an example, you can craft it between 60 and 110, but I only recommend making 30, and switch to Elixir of Giant Growth at 90 skill. Comprende?

1-60: 60 x | | You can also use these to craft from 55-105 at the cost of only 1 .
    60-110: 30 x | | Used in PvP and battlegrounds.
90-140: 50 x | | Can be quite expensive (about 7g each) but RPers love these. Use this bark: "Impress your girlfriend: [Elixir of Giant Growth]
    140-155: 15 x | | Gap filler. Send these to your alts.
155-165: 10 x | | Another gap filler. Send them to your alts, they are thirsty.
165-205: 50 x | | Fun item in battlegrounds, can also be used to solo dungeons.
    205-210: 5 x | | Just a gap filler, don't expect to sell these.
210-245: 35 x | 35 | The Volatile Rum can be hard to find, so you may need to do some off-roading to get through this gap. The Rum drops off various pirates, and is also sold by a few NPCs, including Shely Steelbowels, whom spawns if you happen to kill Saurfang in ICC (alliance only). Remember, your engineer can craft the recipe for this one!
    225-226: | | 4 x | 4 x | 4 x | Use for transmutations. If you plan on going to 500+ skill without using a transmute, this one isn't necessary.
240-275: 30 x | | Another cheap gap filler that can probably be sold at the AH.
275-290: 50 x | | Use these to make rods and squeeze out more profits!
285-320: 35 x | 2 x | 1 x | Recently nerfed but still SICK in PvP. Expensive and slow to move, but they move. I personally use them myself.
    305-335: 50 x | | Remember this tip?

[quest]Master of Elixirs[/quest] and [quest]Master of Potions[/quest] require several potions and elixirs. Even if you're not heading into one of these specializations (go Transmutation first), make these potions/elixirs and sell them at the AH.

    315-337: 10 x | | Used in Master of Elixirs
    325-340: 5 x | 2 x | | Used in Master of Potions.
    330-352: 10 x | | 2 x | Used in Master of Elixirs. Alliance vendor, horde vendor.
    340-362: 5 x | 2 x | | Used in Master of Potions. Recipe sold by these vendors.
    345-367: 5 x | 3 x | Used in Master of Elixirs. Recipe sold by these vendors.
350-372: | | Used in Master of Potions. Recipe sold by these vendors.
350-380: 55 x | 55 x | Needed for the transmute mastery quest, amongst others. Don't be afraid to craft a ton of these, they're great sellers!
    380-385: 5 x | | 2 x | Gap filler.
    385-395: 10 x | 2 x Tiger Lily | Sell these at the AH.
395-440: 50 x | 8 x | Burn up that spare Saronite and send the Titanium to your blacksmith to make Titansteel Bars for choppers.
    440-450: 10 x | | Gap filler. Send these to your alts.
    450-455: 5 x | 2 x | Gap filler.
455-460: 5 x | | Gap filler, but not such a bad pot. Can be sold at the AH.
460-470: 10 x | | Another gap filler that can be sold at the AH.
    470-485: 25 x | | Used in .
485-490: 5 x | | Great raiding potion, sell this at the AH.
490-495: 5 x | | Great raiding potion, sell these at the AH.
    495-500: 5 x | | Sell these at the AH.

During the following step, you can stop at 504 and make your followed by your epic trinket, but I'm going to assume that you're broke and trying to squeeze as much profit as possible now.

    500-510: 10 x | 8 x | 8 x | 8 x | Best tanking flask available, sell these!
    510-525: 12 x | 8 x | 8 x | 8 x | Use these for Vial of the Sands later on.
    510-525: 12 x | 8 x | 8 x | 8 x | Use these for Vial of the Sands later on.

You can also crank out transmutes to finish off to 525

I think the cheapest way to learn a specialisation is to go for potion mastery (5 Super Health, 5 Super Mana, 5 Major Dreamless Sleep and the book from the second boss in The Botanica), unlearn it for 150g and switch to the one you like (hint: you like transmutation).

The most expensive part of this guide are those primal mights but it's not a powerleveling guide so it might be worth it.

A somewhat related question is whether it's worth to powerlevel alchemy to have the high tier recipes available NOW instead of making profit over a longer time while leveling.
I remember back in Wrath when I leveled my first alchemist I spend a few gold here and a few gold there, farmed mats that weren't avaiable and had a capped alchemist in one or two days. I dropped the flasks I made while leveling on the AH and made more money than I spend.
But that was Wrath and I haven't been active besides transmuting SSDs and rubies so I don't know if the few potions (flasks seem to be dead) from leveling are able to cover your expenses.

It's a decent guide and there are a few parts worth snatching once I got another alt that lacks alchemy, because, you know, you can't have enough of them.

PS: This comment box is weird. No cursor and strange delete behavior.
PPS: Well, the comment box seems to be ok again.

Just a hint: There's an alternative at ~490. If the Truegold-CD is worth the same as the Volatile-CD, you can also use Transmute: Volatiles from that on. Sure, you get only one point per day, but it's the cheapest and at the same time most profitable way to level Alchemy in my opinion at this point (with 2g for Life and 16g for Air, it's ~200g income per Talent point!)

If there are some days (or at least one) between skill 275 and 475 you should get the recipe and do [Transmute: Water to Air] for not wasting the daily cd.

I'd like to point out a few things from 275-290, 485-515, and 515-525.

Very helpful guide but there can be some modifications that can be made.

      275-290
From 275 to 290 the transmute arcane crystals and thorium bars to arcanite bars. The issue is arcane crystals can very greatly as the prices undergo huge spikes, it can go as low as 5g per crystal although those instances are rare to skyrocketing as high as 96g per crystal. The overall average settles to around 40g-50g per crystal. One might find a alternate method if the arcanite bars sells for much less than than the mats. Or if your lucky and you have access to cheap arcane crystals.

I'm from a RP realm where arcane crystals is extremely highly sought after due to the fact that its one of the mats used to make the Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker. And everyone wants one of those weapons. This causes the extreme fluctuation in prices of arcane crystals, and tends to be a big headache for alchemist whom are just trying to level alchemy.

      485-515
Another part I want to point out is going from 485 to 515, you discover transmute living elements. This CD based transmute is highly profitable, and is the primary transmute CD many alchemist use even maxed alchemist whom don't even transmute truegold. If your in no rush to power level your alchemy, than from 485 to 515 do living elements everyday and you'll for certain generate X amount of gold over a span of 30 days. Assume its 30 days, and 100g profit margin per transmute you'll be 3,000 gold richer going from 485 to 515 slowly.

      515-525.
There's a very cheap way to level from 515-525 and you don't have to consume a huge amount of herbs and volatile life used to make flasks.
Also the cost of flasks sells for less than the mats, so from 515 to 525 another route is to transmute Zephyrite+Azshira Veil to Ocean Sapphire. Zephyrite is the dreaded "useless" gem than JCers normally vendor because its leftover stuff from the shuffle, and nobody wants it, you can't even make stuff to DE with, and even during the quest days the market is flooded to a point where its sold on the AH for slightly above the vendor value. You can pretty much pick up stack after stack after stack at the cost of slightly above the vendor value. The herb when ranked in expenses of cata herbs is considered moderately priced, as heartblossom and twilight jasmine are the most expensive. So obtaining the Azshira Veil needed for the transmute shouldn't be too costly or expensive.

Transmute them into Ocean Sapphire which is a worthless rare gem that JCers can't even use because its worthless and have the same worth as vendor value with a vendor value of 32g. Go vendor it and get your 32g off this transmute.

Can't this be said for nearly any reagent? If you build stock over a few days, odds are you will find decent prices. Your server offers dirt cheap (3-5g) crystals right now. US alliance median is actually 20.5g and market price is 22g.

Besides, you can sell Arcanite for 64g according to TUJ. Arcanite Rods move well at 175g for me. The bars are needed for TF, so that plays in your favor.

The opportunity cost of delaying alchemy for so long far outweighs the benefits of transmuting living elements. Besides, Cardinal Ruby is more profitable.

      515-525.

That defies the purpose of this guide. The flasks you're making are going to provide a ROI (through Vials). That's a far better option than transmuting Ocean Sapphire, which by the way, vendor for 3.2g, not 32g. Transmuting Ocean Sapphires costs you. The flasks listed do not.

Question though, since 350-380, making primal mights is no longer needed for transmutation mastery, what would be your suggestions for crafting from 350-380?

Good question. Primal Might is still used for Runed Adamantite Rod. They just don't sell as quickly anymore.

I can't investigate other options at the moment, any suggestions?

Looking at wow-professions, 350-380 isn't profitable as well as it takes a lot of time to farm from a place to another. Currently farming adamantite for prospecting ores/adamantite powders. I'm leveling JC/alchem btw for the shuffle

Personally i think Primal Might is the best way to go profit wise. Specially if you keep an eye out for cheap primals to xmute. All enchanters need it for Runed Adamantite rod like you said, and i still sell em at a decent clip for a good profit margin.

Yeah, I mean, Mights are still moving at 400g+ here (down from 700g). The only problem is finding the Primal Airs.

Whenever i see the price jump for Mights or Airs i just send my engie for a good ol fashioned lap around nagraad. Usually come back with 2-4 primals for 15 minutes. But for those goblins who don't like leaving the comfort of SW/Org AH, just keep an eye on the snatch list :P

Depends on your server. Most likely transmuting Volatile Life to Volatile Air, but don't forget about the older transmutes. You can potentially make a very tidy profit off Transmute Water to Air or Transmute Primal Water to Air, depending what your server is like. Primal Mights still sell reasonably well and at good prices on my server, and they're not even on a cooldown. I usually sell 3-5 of them per day for about 385g each.

With the change to the Transmute Mastery quest (now requiring Truegold instead of Primal Might), wouldn't it be cheaper (and less time-consuming) to just make Wrath era stuff for the 350-380 points? I know that might go against the profitability of this leveling method, but I think the time/money savings might make it a worthwhile option.

      @Sterling

I've just just discovered in 4.3 they have changed the way that the Specialization Quests are done.

"To become a Potion Master, you'll need six Mythical Healing Potions, fourMythical Mana Potions, and two Potions of Treasure Finding. Materials-wise, completing this quest will requires six Twilight Jasmine, 12 Whiptail, 20 Cinderbloom, 12 Heartblossom, 8 Stormvine, and 12 Crystal Vials."

"To become a Transmutation Master, you need four Truegold. This requires 12 Pyrium Bars, 40 Volatile Fire, 40 Volatile Air, 40 Volatile Water, and four days' worth of cooldowns."

"To become an Elixir Master, you need two Flasks of the Draconic Mind, two Flasks of the Winds, two Flasks of Steelskin, and two Flasks of Titanic Strength. This requires 64 Volatile Life, 32 Azshara's Veil, 32 Twilight Jasmine, 32 Whiptail, 32 Cinderbloom, and eight Crystal Vials."

You also require a level of 475 alchemy for the quests to become visible at the alch trainers in SW/ORG.
