  • A Quick FYI About Ads

You may have noticed that the site now has ads. I know, it sucks. They burn my eyes, too. Some of you may be disgruntled, and that's understandable. I promised an explanation, so here it is.

Running a site is expensive. Since its launch almost a year ago, the site has run up a costly tab.

    Past expenses:
    • Basic hosting.
    • Added hosting features.
    • Site advertising.
    • Forum software license.
    • Forum mod licenses.
    • Other random costs (like phone calls to the hosting company).

    Future expenses:
    • Dedicated hosting.
    • Professional redesign (tentative).

Up until now these costs were defrayed by myself (and other site admins). Luckily, these are mostly one-time incurred costs and monthly expenses shouldn't escalate too much, short of any dedicated hosting we might need. I don't mind paying for site expenses at all. I sincerely enjoy the forums and the community and wouldn't trade you guys for a pike (that's a Canadian expression!).

But here's the catch: I'm getting married in 3 months. I sat down with my fiance and we drafted a budget for the wedding, and a financial plan. I had to explain and rationalize where The Consortium would fit into this plan (it didn't).

The good news is that ads will not be visible to forum contributors. Entrepreneur rank users (and above) will not see ads. Just give me a chance to sit down and sort out ad conditionals and all that jazz.

I apologize if the ads lessen the quality of your experience at The Consortium.

I have never heard that expression in my soon to be 19 years >.>

Also, I'm apparently an Entrepreneur and can still see them :P

I dunno if @Sinshroud remembered to pass this on, but I got a butt-tonne of web capacity available if you want it

Haha, most people have never heard it. It was common in the small town where I grew up.

The rank conditionals aren't in yet. Hang tight.

What do you mean by web capacity? Bandwidth is not an issue, the problem so far has been uptime and random stuff like crashes and database rollbacks. It would also be nice to have access to Memcache/Xcache/APC etc.

I grew up in a small town outside of Toronto :P

I'll have to catch you tmrw or something cause i'm almost falling asleep here but my web account is basically unused and I can stick addon domains on there. It is a shared hosting type plan, not a dedicated machine or virtual. I'll pm you the specs in the morning if you're interested.

Congratulations to you and your soon-to-be wife!

Regarding adds: I can't speak for everyone, but I wouldn't really mind them all that much. I understand running such an awesome site can cost a bit, and if all it takes to help maintain it is a few extra banners, I'd happily take them

Personally, I have no problems with an ad or 2 if built into the forum in such as way as to not disrupt it - even if I eventually became a Windrunner. I visit different forums and some of them have ads - that's never been an issue. If it helps you recoup some of the costs or even break a small profit, I'd say keep 1 or 2 ads up for all users at all levels.

      Just my .02 worth,
      Matt

PS. Congrats on your upcoming marriage. I was married the first time for 20 years... but after a messy divorce, I'm still an optimist and will be marrying my fiance in the near future as well.

I see ads. My eyes!!!! Oh the pain, the pain. Whatever, this is a site dedicated to capital-goblinism. If people don't understand that things cost money to run, and advertising is just going to be a viable avenue to offset costs, then they aren't living in the real world. As long as it doesn't start spamming my ears with "Congrats! You're a winner!" randomly like Wowhead does from time to time, fine by me!

Are you seeing ads in the forums or just the home page?

Congratulations on the impending nuptials. As for advertising, the only request I could possibly make would be if you could ban anything political from the rotation. It's usually going to be US-Centric anyway. and grow increasingly insane (and inane) as campaigns wear on.

@Clianna, Yea... I saw we were both on Whisperwind when I did a search on current Windrunners... and I'm guessing it's one per server, not one per server/faction cause of cross-faction trading huh? I'm on the Horde side mostly, but as I've posted on here, I do cross faction posting too.

Due to the sensitive nature of the information contained within the private forum, membership is limited to 1 per server. As always, exceptional applications will be consideration regardless of spot vacancy on said server.
Oh well... guess unless I manage to invent some new economy on Wow, I'm not going to be a Windrunner - and I'm pretty sure they meant 'considered'... but close enough to be understood.

Back to the advertising question - as I said, just keep it so the pages still flow correctly, keep them so they don't detract too much (1 or 2 max and not too 'heavy' in size nor processing requirement) and I have zero problem with them being up no matter what member status I'm at.

For my part, i'm totally ok with ads as long as you don't get spamm all over the place. If it helps to support this forum - hell, get some more ads ;-)

Actually, I was simply making a joke. I'm actually on Windrunner, not Whisperwind. But, you're thinking of Wind Traders, not Windrunners. You are correct though, generally, Wind Traders are one per server, but there can be exceptions.
