  • Forums Going Down This Weekend For An Upgrade - Any Feature Requests?

The forums will be going down this weekend (likely Friday or Saturday night) for a much-needed upgrade to vBulletin 4.1.4. During this time the site will be unavailable. If all goes well, the downtime should last 15-45 minutes. I will take this opportunity to add several features to the site:
    • Richer front-page media.
    • WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor for posting/replying. Allows copy-pasting directly from Word and similar programs!
    • Latest version of WoWhead tooltips!
    • Hundreds of bug fixes.
    • Tentative: on-site chatbox!
    • Mobile version of the site.

Keep in mind, the forum uses some addons/modules that make it operate the way it does. If things don't look right after the update, stay cool, I'm probably working on it.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to ask the community: What feature(s) would you like to see on this site? I'm listening and always eager to make improvements to The Consortium. Recommendations can be posted here, or in the site feedback forum.

As a closing note, I'd like to point out that we reached our 2000th member yesterday, a nice little milestone indeed.

    Thank you for your time!

    From Sinshroud:
To prevent yourself from acquiring withdrawal symptoms from lack of forums, come join us in our IRC chat room (#TheConsortium)!

Built in spellchecker without needing an addon? Not sure if this is possible though.

Out of idle curiousity (NOT a feature request), have you considered upgrading to vBulletin's publishing suite? While you already have a front page that pulls latest posts and links to various gold blogs, upgrading to the suite gives you a fair amount of customizing options. It also gives you the ability to allow forum posters to create their own blogs, which with this particular community, seems like some would love that option.

Aeg: Do you use IE or Mozilla? I think the spellchecker is built into Firefox but not explorer.

edit: after looking at your home page, it would seem you do have it installed, in which case the question is, why not allow the blogs?

The front page is a feature of VB publishing suite. The blogs are disabled completely, they were very buggy in 4.0.6 and fragmented the discussion away from the forums. We tried pulling blogs via RSS into the forums (they're actually still there) but this hurt our page ranking and sparked very little discussion anyway. The problem with blogs is that most of the stuff that ends up in there would/could go in the forums instead. Even a "journal entry" area would still work just as well in the forums.

If anyone can make a good case for the blogs section to go back up, I'm all ears.

I can see this being a huge factor in your decision as this forum is geared so specifically towards discussions about making gold in WoW. As I said, just idle curiosity I have them turned on on my site, but every now and then I wonder if it was such a good idea since it did pull people away from the forums and in many ways changed the nature/purpose of the site (The Twisting Nether Gazette for the curious).

A web base IRC client to connect people to #theconsortium would bring a lot more traffic to the channel I think

Nice site! Is that a custom theme?

Your blog section would look better as an off-topic forum, I think.

Thanks! Yeah, I commissioned one of the artists to make the headers and menubar arts, but the rest I did on my own. *grumbles about insanely stupid vbulletin styling setup* The blogs were specifically created to move the offtopic discussions off of the forum, as I had half of the community wanted to know what the other half was having for lunch and the other half REALLY didn't want to know. Moving that stuff to the blogs was a compromise, heh.

I would love you forever if you could integrate IRC to the website. The IRC channel is really flourishing (usually about 20-30 people online daily in it - currently 23 online). Discussions going on all day too.

I would probably use it more if it was a better interface. The current one I am forced to use at work boots me out after a period of time, and I usually just check back in every now and then instead of sitting at my computer.

Also, is there any way of making the rep system more prominent? There have been a number of people who have thrown together some good stuff lately and I wonder how many people blow right past the little rep star in the corner?

There is a lot within this community to appreciate amongst ourselves, it would be nice to see that play more of a role.

It's hard to make it anymore prominent without ruining the theme (e.g. we could change the color of the icon but it ends up looking ugly).

The best way really to help remind people that it's there, is when ever you see a good post and you actually give rep, then say +rep or what ever similar in your reply as well.

Even the simplest chat mod is a resource hog, that's why most IRC servers will kick you off if you go inactive (I guess I don't blame them). Only way around this is to run your own IRC server.

I think we can make the rep system a bit better. For one, the star can be changed to ">> Add Reputation For This Post <<" or "+REP" or something similar. Second, I might be able to move the button around, and maybe brighten it up. But as Sinshroud said, users need to keep in mind that the reputation system is in place and give rep accordingly and consistently.

I would love to have a little clicky icon that inserts the (item)(/item) and puts the cursor in the middle. It would make it a lot easier to add Wowhead links (especially from an iPhone)

Regarding the rep button then I've been looking for it and couldn't find it, so maybe a bit more accessible would be great ( I ended up thinking that it was reserved for windtraders to give rep)

At the top of the forums there is a FAQ button that explains what reputation is and how to give it etc too.

hi for some reason the RSS subscribe section and the e-mail newsletterr takes up a 3rd of the front page, it's kind of distracting. is there a way to make them smaller so it doesnt obstruct main features (headlines, latest discussions etc) thank you.
    1. Sinshroud's Avatar

@Vanditor, it probably has to do with your screen resolution or screen size. The smaller your screen the bigger the RSS/Newsletter columns look compared to the rest of the page.
E.G. This is what it looks like on a very big screen: http://i.imgur.com/1xmR8.jpg - much smaller compared to the rest of the page.

@Sterling, on the forum index page there is an arrow button next to the New Forum Posts widget column. Would it not be possible to have a similar thing on the homepage for the RSS and Newsletter widget columns?

I wish there is a "View your post" link like the one on JMTC forum. With the status of the post, new answer, already read ot not.

I use it as a fast way to see if a post where I've written into got a reply.

Also a nice way to find back a thread that I've written into in the case I want to add some news.

You can subscribe to threads? It emails you etc when there is a new reply to a thread that you have subscribed to.
