  • The Consortium Competition is HERE!

So I hope that my Pre-Competition Post has gotten you all excited and your creative juices flowing. - I know it was a while ago, and half of you probably forgot about it eh?

As promised, this competition is going to be rather interesting and a little bit complex. It's going to take you time to complete it, but it's a balance between hardwork and innovation/knowledge. So even complete new players to making gold do actually stand a chance in winning against seasoned entrepreneurs.

Essentially the competition is a documentary/journal/diary style competition, where you will be closely recording everything you do for the different stages of the competition.

Sterling has kindly made a new forum section called Competition Entries where you must post your competition entries instead of having to mail it or have them all scattered about in different forums. The best thing is that only YOU can see your own threads and posts in that section. When the competition is over we will open it up for everyone to see.

    The Competition Stages:
Stage 1: You will start off with 10gold and you need to then turn that into 200gold. You can farm - but you must find a way to incorporate that 10g into your farming, you can flip, you can vendor, but you cannot use professions. You can flip profession items but you may not craft or make anything with professions (your professions or anyone else's). You cannot however use any other gold other than that 10g and the subsequent amounts that you earned using that 10g.

Stage 2: With this 200gold that you have now attained, you need to pick one specific niche and turn that 200gold into 2000gold. It can be a professions niche, it can be manipulating a market niche, etc. You cannot however use any other gold other than that 200g and the subsequent amounts that you earned using that 200g.

Stage 3: Reflection. A big thing about this competition is I want it to show new players how easy it can actually be to make gold when you have next to nothing. For the last stage I want you to explain to us if you think that the niches/methods that you chose were effective and if you would recommend it to others or not.

Some things I want you to take into account:
The reason being is I will be issuing an additional award to the entry that to me has the most detail - regardless of voting poll results, without coming across like an essay/thesis and has the most effort or creativity put in. So just because you don't have an entire blog community backing you up in the votes, you can still win a significant prize!
    • Screenshots
    • Own comments / describe what you are doing
    • Detail! Record EVERYTHING, dates/days, time of the day or length of time it took, repair bills, postage costs, lost deposit costs, auction house cuts.
    • Item links, link any items involved so people can check out the item in more detail.
    • Addons
    • Mistakes made

    Final Comments:
    • If you are able to make more than 2000g with that method then keep going. You do not have to stop at 2000g if you don't want to.
    • Don't cheat and do something like, putting a bottle of milk on the AH for 1c and getting a friend to buy it out for you for 200g in order to complete stage 1. - It's a simple example but you get the point.
    • Have fun, really we make these competitions so that we can increase the interaction amongst the community and for people to have fun. Don't be shy and decide not to enter because you are new to gold making, or because you maybe don't think you have enough time. Be enthusiastic and optimistic!

    Prizes:
We have a couple of prizes lined up ranging from specific wow orientated (legal) services, to TCG pets, and other funky stuff.

If you would like to donate a prize (for example pet codes or gametime or just plain cash) you are welcome to speak to Sterling or myself - it does not have to be a lot at all.

So far we have had donations for this contest from:

    Saate @ Massively Obsessed (www.Saate.net)
KuRIoS @ Massively Multiplayer Owned (www.MMOwned.com)

And some left over cash from the previous contest.

    (Thanks)

    Competition ends on 10th May

P.S. Please don't use ImageShack to host your screenshots, for some reason it blocks me due to my country.
I recommend using www.imgur.com, it's an awesome image host and very very fast.

This seems very interesting; I haven't participated in one of your competitions before. Tell me, would videos, either as the entry itself or supplemental to the entry, be allowed? I like frapsing things. :3

Edited to add: I'm confused about the profession rules. Is it correct that farming with professions (Mining, skinning, herbing) are okay but crafting are not? What about smelting? Archaeology and other "crafting style" secondary profession types?

There are viable ways of making money by buying vendor stuff and selling @ ah, are you saying thats not allowed? I wont divuldge what items, since its a competition but I hope its allowed to take advantage of lazy people sitting @ ah not bothering to go to a vendor.

Yes it would be nice if you could clarify the gathering professions rules. I am a bit confused aswell.

@Faid, videos as a supplement would definitely be nice, though I recommend having the majority of your work written down or screenshotted because its easier to keep track of what all was done etc. It also prevents us from being too dazzled by someone's amazing video editing skills instead of focusing on what really matters.

For Stage 1, no professions gathering or crafting, etc. I want to see how imaginative people can be, a lot of new players complain that they can't make gold because they don't have any professions or don't have the correct ones. By enforcing this rule it helps show that professions aren't everything.

@Sponsor, Limited Supply items and vendor sold items are find, no problem at all. I personally sell hundreds and hundreds of different recipes myself and it works nicely.

I accidently worded the bottle of milk thing a bit wrong.

Don't cheat and do something like, putting up a bottle of milk on the AH for 200g and getting a friend to buy it for you, in order to complete stage 1. - It's a simple example but you get the point.
That is how it should have been phrased (will go edit). It just means that don't cheat. Like putting a piece of linen cloth (or anything really) and having a friend / second account buy it for an abnormal price of in unusual quantities.

P.S. remember it will count in your favor if you do something original. For example farming volatile air for 2 hours in order to make 200g is a bit boring. Use this opportunity to explore more out of the box niches on your server, it just might end up making you thousands in the future anyways.

Will this use the same voting system as the last competition?

In stage 2, can you use a maxed profession, or start over with a new one at 1 skill? I'm guessing start from skill 1, but its better safe than sorry, right?

Only to understand it right for the first stage, is it allowed to level a profession if you start with a new toon and dont sell the things you gather or produce or do I have to break 200g first than start leveling the profession, for making it more realistic I would start with a new toon and as gathering yields xp it would make it a bit faster

Yes, we will use a poll like last time.

In all stages you can use characters of any level.

In Stage 2 you can use what ever professions and levels you wish.

I must say I'm a bit disappointed, since the point of this exercise, as you put it, is; "I want it to show new players how easy it can actually be to make gold when you have next to nothing". Fully maxed professions and lvl85 chars aren't nothing, imho, but I do see the value of this exercise aswell, though stage 2 is not for new players, since they wont have a lvl85 char, or a maxed profession to work with. Stage 2 is more for that raider/pvper who spent his last gold and needs to learn how to earn gold from scratch.
I will stick with my original thought when I saw this contest, to start fresh with a new char on a new realm to make it as authentic as possible. But seeing how stage 2 is very different, I might have to switch to one of my highlevel chars with maxed professions.

So in short, this contest will show new players how to get from 10-200g, and it will show broke old players how to get from 200-2000g.

@Sponsor you are welcome to do it as if you had to start a fresh.

I was more thinking of keeping the 'make x amount of gold starting at level 1' idea for another competition, but you are welcome to do it now.

I don't know, Sponsor. I don't think your average new player sits down the moment they buy the game and thinks "I better figure out good ways to make gold!" Chance are they don't even know what gold is, let alone the impact it has on the game. (I know many of us came from Diablo 2 where gold was a joke.) I think it's a safe assumption that most people who look to make gold aren't going to be constrained to a professionless level 1. Maybe a mid level character, but probably not "just starting out."

You said using limited supply vendor items is ok for Phase 1. So do vendors in outlands/northrend/cata content count? Since a level 1 player would not be able to get there.

Since the character doesn't have to be level one, I would assume that you can. Besides, a level one can always buy a mage portal.

Edit: In phase 2, can we only do 1 market for the entire phase? Or did you mean have atleast one?

I interpreted it as we can only use one profession for phase 2. I.E no prospecting jewelcrafting then DEing

I understood it more as one "thing." Your thing can be, say, farming and selling ore (A common one for new players!) or only using auctioneer vendor searches (Good luck!) or only using arbirtration (Arbitrage?) or something of that sort. Basically, the way to do whatever your'e doing may be diverse but there's one common theme with everything you sell, like "Things that can be farmed in Outland" or "Things I bought on the AH and flipped via trade chat."
