  • Consortium Profession Leveling Guides: Blacksmithing

A few months ago I wrote a guide on leveling enchanting profitably. Shortly after the launch of Cataclysm, I had done the same for Blacksmithing, and figured I'd share my ways with you guys.

I estimated my costs to 460 at about 7kg, anything past this level was easily paid for by crafted gear. Conservatively, you can probably make about 11k in returns doing this, which makes for a modest 4k profit (I listened in economics class).

    Shopping list:
    • 133 x
    • 212 x
    • 1250 x
    • 902 x
    • 103 x
    • 80 x
    • 236 x
    • 128 x
    • 32 x
    • 32 x
    • 16 x
    • 22 x
    • 340 x
    • 250 x
    • 40 x
    • 750 x
    • 66 x (or 66 + 66 )
    • 15 x
    • 140 x (should be cheaper than buying raw mats)
    • 70 x
    • 235 x
    • 100 x
    • 265 x
    • 80 x
    • 20 x
    • 5 x
    • 166 x

The first 120 points are very cheap, so it's not worth optimizing for profit:
    • 1-30 x 33
    • 30-65 x 50
    • 65-75 x 10
    • 75-95 x 106
    • 95-100 x 5
    • 100-107 x 7
    • 107-110 x 3
    • 110-120 x 10

As per this article, it's advisable to craft all of the following items and turn them in for Horde-only blacksmithing patterns. These can be sold for hefty amounts when cross-factioned to the Alliance AH.
    • 120-136 x 16
    • 125-136 x All
    • 125-151 x 32
    • 130-146 x 16
    • 130-146 x 16
    • 135-151 x 16
    • 135-163 x 32
    • 155-171 x 16
    • 155-171 x 16
    • 165-181 x 16
    • 170-186 x 16
    • 186-200 x 14
    • 200-210 x 22

From 210-250 the skill-up costs are mainly covered by disenchanting. If is not selling well on your server, you may want to consider an alternate leveling route.
    • 210-225 x 15
    • 225-230 x 5
    • 230-250 x 20

If you're looking to get rid of those s, check out this post.
    • 250-260 x 30
    • 260-275 x 15
    • 275-285 x 22
    • 285-300 x 15
    • 300-340 x 70
    • 340-350 x 35 (vendor/destroy these)
    • 350-360 x 20
    • 360-375 x 25
    • 375-385 x 10
    • You can start crafting Saronite gear instead of Cobalt if the latter is too expensive.
    • 385-390 x 5 (or if Cosmics are selling for more)
    • 390-400 x 10
    • 400-410 x 10
    • 410-420 x 10
    • 420-425 x 5
    • 425-455 x 83
    • 455-460 x 4

From here on the crafts become very expensive. Keep in mind, you can resell pretty much anything you make at cost or more. has been a great seller for me, it seems that most players stay away from expensive blues when skilling up. may seem attractive but is not turning any profits at the moment (though you may hold onto them for now). Once you hit 515, it's a simple matter of assembling some epics and hitting the level cap!

I plan on releasing similar guides for all professions. Stay tuned for additional installments. What profession would you like to see next? Let me know!

I need to set up a Blacksmith in the near future (the only hard part is choosing which character). That being said, since I'm Alliance, does that change the 120-210 skill range for leveling? Or am I misreading your guide?

Nope, the only difference is that you need to send over the recipe kits to horde side and turn them in there. It's a bit of a PITA but definitely worthwhile.

Great work putting this together, I do have some suggestions though.
Regarding the horde only BS quests(from 120-186 skill), you should reduce the amount of "kits" you want to make there, you level up just fine with much fewer kits. 8 kits is abit much, since you actually have to find 8 people lvl35 or higher, with BS skill 140 or higher, that is not interested in learning these plans themselves. I had made 3 of the items, enough for the 8 kits, when I realized this, and I felt it was too late to turn and dont make 8 full kits, so I will stick with it, but as a powerleveling guide with focus on gold, you should reduce the kit amount abit, I think. Since you will skill up easy with less.

      3 kits should be sufficient;
      • 120-126 x 6
      • 125-136 x All
      • 125-137 x 12
      • 130-136 x 6
      • 130-136 x 6
      • 135-141 x 6
      • 135-147 x 12
      • 155-161 x 6
      • 155-161 x 6
      • 165-171 x 6
      • 170-176 x 6

I know this list only shows up to 176, leaving a gap from 176 to 186, but so far, I have only done the top 5 of these items(for 8 kits), and I am already at 185 BS, so you will definitly go up and above since many of these starts on the same skill level and end when they turn yellow.

Edit: oh, one more thing, it seems TUJ has "US Alliance Mean" on each of these items set to 2k gold, so thats 10k gold per kit, bringing the 8kit thing to 80k gold...wow

You missed the part right above that, however.

You make extra for the Barbaric Iron patterns.

I didn't miss it, I read that article too. And I do know this guide makes extra for the barbaric iron plans, but I am just suggesting tune it down a notch, since its only needed 3 kits to get past 186 BS, and after you have passed that, ofc you can make more kits if you like, its a nice way to make gold. But I just dont see why making those extra 5 kits should be a part of this guide. ..thats all. Would be better with a little note after 186, something along the line of; "if you want to make more kits, feel free to do so later for gold, but its not needed to powerlevel BS"

I misread; I see what you mean now. I suppose you could do it either way. In many cases it might make sense to just do what you need, because the more mats you buy, the more it starts to cost.

[quest]2753[/quest] has been changed, or maybe it has been like that all along, I'm not sure. Anyways, now it requires 4+4+2, not 2+2+2 like this guide suggest.

Excellent guide! The only things I could suggest would be finding an alternative to the Sharp Claws as they are in pitifully short supply

You will need them to turn in the Barbaric Battlements quest.
