Guys please don't go about creating posts on blogs asking for people to register accounts and vote for you, it just doesn't make sense and isn't fair to those who cannot do such a thing.

Heya, thanks man. I don't blame you, it's kind of just a natural instinct to do. Like I know I notified some of my friends that I knew browsed the forums and told them they should check out the competition that is running at the moment.

The thing is, if one person goes and asks people to vote for them on their blog, ... well we have like 5 contestants who all run blogs and you can see how that will work out. It will just be like a blog war of who has the most followers instead of who's guide is really better.

I moderate for another huge wow community and the admin of it has an account on this site, and he offered to make an announcement on the forum for everyone to vote for me too, but I declined simply because it's not really much of an achievement then.

You don't want to come up against a forum that has over 1000 constant viewers anytime of day :P

Yep its totally the natural response but yea I don't want to go up against that forum this time .....

      Cheers

So no making a blog post or tweet (ahem Zoxy) to solicit votes. Totally agree.

Why would you think making a campaign sign in the voting thread would be any better Sinshroud? Both of you should be disqualified. Well rules should have been set ahead of time to be fair to those entrants that aren't bloggers and to warn against such actions, so can't really blame either of you.

Good luck to all the entrants!

What you say is true too I guess Cold. Mine was just intended as a joke and it's only seen by people who have come to the forum to vote on their own anyways. I didn't really expect it to have any sway in the voting process. It was just meant for a laugh.

I don't mind being disqualified, because I had fun partaking in the competition and am not really looking for any monetary or other, reward for contributing to the forum other than seeing the community grow.

It's our first competition and it's natural that it doesn't go 100% perfect the first time Things will only improve from here and we can learn from past mistakes. I PMed Sterling this morning, with a list of improvements we could make on future competitions and recently posted a big thread in the Wind Trader section for a more indepth discussion about it. Here is a bit of it:

Things that need to be/should be implemented for future competitions:
      • The Guides (or entries, depending on the competition type) do NOT have to be exclusive to The Consortium (exactly like it is now), BUT all entries SHOULD be posted on The Consortium Forums. That post on the Forums is then entered into the competition.

      1. Yes, for many it is technically "posted" already on the forums via the Bloggers Corner Feed System, but you will see my reasoning, when I talk about the guide section below, why it should be posted properly on the forums too.
      2. It will improve the forums SEO (Search Engine Optimization) meaning we basically get more traffic to the forums via Search Engine users.
      3. It will add quality content to the forums. Almost all blog posts by those on here, are good quality blog posts anyways.
      4. Not many people actually bother to read through the Bloggers Corner posts (personally I only click on them if something interesting catches my eye in the "Latest posts" forum feed. If we post them on the forums (again to do with my guide section below) they will be more visible to more members).

      • We should only allow entries into the competition, or guides (or entries) that have been created within the time of the competition. (*cough* Cold, your 6 month old post entry *cough*)

      1. If the competition starts on 1st Jan and ends on 29th Jan, then only entries that are created during that time should be included.
      2. Otherwise when ever there is a competition, some people can just browse through their blog posts for the past year, find one that is well written and relevant (that maybe took them more than a month to write or something) and post it, then rotate in various blog posts when ever there is a competition instead of actually creating new and fresh content for the competition - which is what the competition really should be about anyways.

      • You should NOT be able to go onto your blog and make a post saying something like "Hi guys there is a competition running <link here>, please go vote for me!"

      1. It's a natural instinct for many to just go and try get people to vote for them, and I don't blame you either, it's just one of those things. Hell if I ran a blog I might have done that too.
      2. BUT if all bloggers or influential people on other forums/communities (see I'm not just picking on you bloggers :P ) go make posts like that, it's going to end up being a blog war about who has the most loyal followers, instead of what really counts - who's entry actually deserves to win.

If you combine requiring people to post their guide entries onto the forums with only entering new and relevant posts created within the start and end time of the competition, it will generate a nice spark of activity on the forums.

      • You should not be able to vote on polls if you do not have a registered account on the forums, or you should have to meet certain minimum requirements like x-amount of posts to vote, or y-amount of days registered.

      1. You can see a screenshot HERE that you are able to vote on polls without being registered/logged in.
      2. I didn't actually check a box and click vote, because I didn't want to violate the "no more than 1 post per IP" rule, but its possible that maybe once you check an option and click submit vote that it gives you an error and asks you to login?

I agree with all that you are saying Sin.

As there was no official ruling on date of article creation, I just tossed up a few I liked. My plan was to use an older post only for the first month. Everything else would come from current content. I would also add that if there is a stated deadline and the entries need to come from a stated timespan, then we should stick to the guidelines instead of extending the contest for additional entries. I'm all for the current content date requirements!

Not trying to flame anyone here, just pointing out observations, as are you.
