In keeping with the theme of investing for Cataclysm, I will discuss several items that I think will gain huge value once the expansion hits the shelves on December 7th. More specifically, I will examine certain rare recipes dropped from old-world dragons, and why I think these are deserving of an investment at this time.

First things first, add these recipes to your snatch list:

Following those links, you may notice something particular about these recipes; their drop rates are low across the board, with reliable drops coming only from old world dragons. Indeed, [npc]Azuregos[/npc], [npc]Emeriss[/npc], [npc]Taerar[/npc], [npc]Lethon[/npc], [npc]Ysondre[/npc] and [npc]Nefarian[/npc] are all common sources for these recipes. These dragons are being removed in Cataclysm (besides Nefarian). I forecast these items to go nearly extinct in 4.0.3, as their primary sources are being removed from the game. To be more specific, 48% of the supply potential for these recipes will simply vanish on December 7th. As an investor, it's easy to see how they could eventually fetch up to 50,000g (for the Schematics, at least).

    Logistics

You may never see these items at the auction house, but here's the good news; the dragons are easily farmed, and often solo'ed by certain classes (hunter, paladin, warlock). I know, I know, we all hate farming - but at the very least, these guys drop some neat loot and a cool ~150-200g. Plus, you're almost guaranteed a valuable recipe for each kill, making the 20-45 minute investment worthwhile. The dragons have a peculiar spawn behavior; only 1 can be up at any given time, as they are on a shared respawn timer:

    24 hours - 30%
    48 hours - 40%
    72 hours - 30%

*Note: The spawn behavior is still poorly understood for these dragons. Some players reported killing multiple dragons in the same day. I was skeptical at first, but can now confirm this, as I have killed 4/5 dragons in a single day myself.

The second tricky part is knowing where the dragon has spawned, if it has at all. There are 5 possible spawn locations for these dragons (click for a map):

    Azshara
    Ashenvale
    Duskwood
    Feralas (click Feralas)
    The Hinterlands (click Hinterlands)

As you can see, some of these locations are totally off the beaten path. The only real way to check if a dragon has spawned is to park an alt there, and physically check for yourself. I personally have an alt parked at each location, making for very easy dragon checks.

    Strategy

In terms of spells and abilities, Emeriss, Taerar, Ysondre and Lethon are very similar:
    • [spell]Noxious Breath[/spell]: Disease DoT that increases ALL cooldowns by 10 seconds. This is the mechanic that will make the boss impossible to solo for most classes. Once stacked to 6, even your instant-cast abilities will have a 60 second cooldown. Make use of any nature resistance you can, and make sure to dispel this DoT if possible. Pet classes can avoid this by facing the dragon away.
    • Seeping fog: Moving cloud that sleeps any player it comes in contact with. If you're hit by this while solo'ing, it's game over (nothing can dispel/counter it).
    • [spell]Corruption of the Earth[/spell] (Emeriss only): an undispellable debuff that deals 100% of the player's max health as damage over 10 seconds. Cast at 75, 50, 25% health.

For a small group of level 80 players, the fight is a simple tank and spank, and only requires the players to dispel the stacking DoT and heal through meager damage. Azuregos is an even simpler fight, and can be solo'ed by most classes.

Take note, you should never advertise in trade chat that a world dragon has spawned. You risk having the kill taken from you - this happened to me twice in the past month. Approach individual players, preferably unguilded, and offer to pay for their time. To date, I have picked up:
    • x 2
    • x 2

is also very valuable, as it now turns into a 24 slot bag (hunters only, BOP). Each kill drops 1-2 BoE rares as well, some worthless, some very valuable.

I'd love to hear from others who may enjoy the nostalgic experience of downing old-world bosses for fun and profit. Remember folks, there is less than 2 months left for you to revisit them! Get your kills in while you still can!

I totally forgot about doing these, since back in the olden days you'd have to have guildies religiously checking the spawns. I used to mess with them but I got focused on getting other things done.

Emeriss is a total PITA to solo, at least prior to the patch. The new 30% change to block for all tank classes makes these things impossible to solo now, but I think I can locate a healer. I desperately want to get another copy of Greater Stats and the recipe hasn't appeared on the AH in a month. I have the recipe already but not on the character I will be transferring. This recipe was the most consistent money maker.

A solid way to check spawns is to park alts you aren't using. Dual account users can grab a fresh level one alt and Chopper them out and park them on the 4 different spawn sites (at the portal). You shouldn't aggro the elites. If you log in, you're dead, but you know they are spawned.

This is incorrect. When the Dragons of Nightmare spawn, they all spawn together, at the same exact time. I've had alts at all four spawn locations, and I've been able to hop between them and see all the dragons up at once.

Aside from that, Azuregos is on a completely different spawn timer than the rest, so he has no relation to the rest. I've killed all 5 in one day, and then other days I've managed to catch the 4 dragons spawn but have Azuregos not up either.

Anyway: some tips I have. These guys should still be easily soloable for the two primary pet classes: hunters and warlocks. The spawn area in Duskwood is the easiest, just have your pet tank the dragon in the middle of the crater and then run around like heck and use instant cast spells. Hunters, keep aspect of the cheetah up at all times so you can get far enough ahead of the fog to use some steady shots to regen focus, but don't let it get anywhere near you at all.

Warlocks, spec demonology for these guys. Use your trusty voidwalker. Let him build up threat for a little while you just run around and heal him. Once your pet hits about 300k aggro (omen is your friend) soulshatter and then go full out, but make sure the fog doesn't get near you. Do NOT keyboard-turn for this, and again, don't let it get near you.

A tip for everyone: Turn particle density all the way up and all other settings all the way down. It really helps with seeing the fog. I always had issues seeing it with particle density down.

Another tip for everyone: If you have two accounts, use both of them. Bring another character (preferably over 70 so they don't have too much issues with misc. small AoE damage each dragon could potentially do) and just have them sit behind the dragon and auto-attack. (It doesn't have to even be a melee class, just bring someone).

If you have two characters, the fog does bounce back and forth, and so if you get hit it won't be game over any more. Really a life saver if the fog does happen to catch you.

This may very well be correct, however from what I have read, the dragons work on a single timer. I too have found multiple dragons at once, but this is rumored to happen on server resets or after maintenance. In the past 3 weeks, I've only seen multiple dragons once (Azuregos + 3 dragons). The rest were single spawns, which lends more credibility to the shared timer theory.

You may be right, but I think this needs more investigation. Will keep you posted!

Seems like it was shared, but sort of random. It's been awhile, but I remember chaining them back in vanilla several times, usually in sets of 2's or 3's (and the pain in the arse it was being cawk blawked by the need for NR resist gear for AQ).

Perhaps it was all of them up at once and we just scrambled to snatch what we could from the alliance. It was definitely mayhem after a realm restart. Bah, I don't recall for sure...please erase this post from your memory.

THX! Did a quick scan and found [Plans: Mithril Shield Spike] for 179g. Think I will hold on to it for a while and relist it sometime after Cataclysm drops.

I was perusing TUJ just to see if these recipes have made it to the AH on my server in the past two weeks. Turns out the ones that are being posted seem to be heavily flipped. The Arcane Bomb Schematic went from 600g to 22,000g within an hour. Delicate Arcanite Converter, Some Thorium, and add Runecloth and you're looking at a freaking neverending goldmine from the people that are serious about BG PvP. Given that flying mounts will make Winterspring/EPL so much easier to farm the mats in the future which should drive those prices down some more.

I appreciate the tip Valokai on the soloing part. I need to dust off my old main. I'm assuming the way you're talking here that the spec is going to be Beastmastery, which would allow incredible healing, good threat management, and jump shotting with the occasional SS; as opposed to the others which offer dead pets and kiting. Now I can't wait to get home... Grrr.

I ran a legacy level 60 guild a year ago or so, so tracking world dragons so I could get a better idea of their spawn time was something I did a lot of.

I think the thing really is that more people go after the world dragons than is generally thought. There used to be a group of people on my server who's kill them all in one fell swoop whenever they popped up, and I noticed two patterns in my tracking of dragons:

-If all four were up, generally I could wait around and no one would come to claim them, until someone finally found them.

-If I came into a situation where one or two of the dragons were not there, I would wait at the other spawn points. Every single time I found the dragons partially cleared, that group would come and take down the remaining ones within the hour. I observed this phenomena last night, in fact.

This leads me to have strong evidence that the four world dragons spawn at the same time, most likely on a timer since the last one died, but who knows. All I know is that on my server, the dragons come and go as one, pretty much.

Thanks a bunch. I manage to find Elixir of Dream Vision for 10g on my server today. It had only been seen once before by my scanning for about a year or so. This is a very rare pattern from the dragons and such.

I may just learn this on alchemist to make those elixirs. Seems like no one else on the server makes them. May be fun to use to sneak around stuff!

I'm thinking that they may all spawn at once. Last night none of them were up, this morning, all four are up.

At one point they were available via the Morrowgrain turn-ins. I used to use these to explore new content and still have a bunch in my banks. They are only used situationally so that's why nobody makes them.

5 dragons, all up at once last night. More support for the all-at-once theory!

Managed to score Azuregos by myself, and Ysondre/Emeriss as a group. There were 2 large groups (horde vs alliance) competing for the Emeriss kill, and boy was that fun. Haven't experienced world PvP like this since the Tarren Mill days. The battle went on for about 2.5 hours, with a horde wipe at 8% at one point. We had to coordinate kills on their 3 healers at 30% to set up and unhealable 25% phase.

Hope to see more of that in the future!

I had a round with these guys last night, 3/4 Nightmares were up (no Ysondre) and Azuregos wasn't up either (may have been killed but no Spirit either). It was strange because there was no trash up and the other three were untouched. If you're going to farm them, wouldn't you go for all of them? Regardless.

At this point I'm more interested in collecting the recipes so I bribed a buddy of mine to come help. Any recipe that I hit need on he collected 5k. He brought his friend to come heal (at no cost, he just wanted to see the fights). Unfortunately we only saw Dream Vision, twice (he got the second copy gratis). He promised he would be happy to come help anytime they were up.

I figure there are 7 recipes I want, so getting someone to come help make it faster and to persuade the other faction from ganking me mid fight would be a big help. Also there is less down-time if you mess up and die. We got the three knocked out within 90 minutes because there was a small learning curve for our healer (sleep and noxious poison are bad, mmkay). Besides, I need to convert 282,000 more gold into motorcycles, so this was more fun for me!

Edit: And my buddy and I are old Vanilla raiders, so I think we had more fun dealing with the mechanics than anything else. If only Arthas had a 25% ability that wrecked your raid.

I just did this on my DK with my brother on his paladin healing it was fun, killed 4 out of the 5 dragons in about an hour timeframe.

      Got some patterns:
      Undeath to Water
      Radiant Breastplate
      Radiant Leggings
      Thorium Belt
      Mooncloth leggings
      Stronghold Guantlets

Also got a Mature Blue Dragon Sinew

i finally got around to time to find these guys, no luck so far. Are there any clues as to if the dragons have spawned and been killed? Is seeing azuregos spirit a good. bad or neutral sign?

Not really. As of 4.0.3a they'll never spawn, ever again. Azuregos' spirit should always be up. There is no correlation between the spirit and Azuregos himself.

      I managed to down a few dragons in the past couple weeks, and got some really awesome drops;

      - I know a blacksmith actively seeking this recipe. He's offering 3k, but I'll get 10k out of him eventually.
      - these have never been seen on my server.

And many more that I can't think of right now.

Wow Emeriss is hard...lol. I must of died 7 times trying to take her out with my druid with bear form and pvp resto gear. That damn sleep. The 15m debuff doesnt help! I did one shot Azuregos and got and and some BOE blues.

Emeriss is extremely hard to solo. The other dragons are pretty easy, especially for ranged/pet classes. Did you know that you can stand on the wooden shrine behind the dragons and be completely immune to the sleep clouds?

wooden shrine? Can you explain? Without the sleep cloud I am sure I can solo emeriss. I encountered her in Ashenvale.

Downed two tonight, first one dropped mithril shield spike, was a little dissappointed, second droped lifelike mechanical toad, slightly more happy.
