  • The Break We've Been Waiting For

I fellow named Cyndez contacted me earlier today with a little gold tip:

    Hi!

Fairly new yet aspiring goblin. Although its a quest line reward, is BoE and the questline is gone in Cataclysm. It already goes for 10k and come 4.0.3 I foresee it going for far more.

    Thanks!

I had been “snatching” this recipe for a long time, but I was completely unaware of the alleged removal / breaking of this quest in Cataclysm. This got me thinking – further investigation was definitely in order. Enter inspector Sterling. I quickly logged to the beta servers and verified Cyndez’ claim:

Cyndez was right. The Isle of Dread, home of the noble Chimaerok, is no more in Cataclysm. For those unaware, Chimaerok meat is required to complete part of the quest chain to obtain .

Now this was getting interesting. This recipe will become extremely rare, and it’s colored purple to boot. We all know how people react to the “epic” factor – just look at . The value of rare recipes is not to be underestimated, even the most useless recipes can fetch upward of 50,000 gold (I’m talking about . Assuming it does indeed become unobtainable, I could see the value of this recipe skyrocket to nearly 40,000 gold in Cataclysm, and far more years from now.

Note: To quell any outraged readers ahead of time: the Thistle Tea recipe was initially BoE and later made BOP.

    The Quest

But anyway. The quest chain in question starts when a player reaches neutral with Brood of Nozdormu. Key parts of the quest:
    • Kill Broodlord Lashlayer in BWL.
    • Farm Chimaerok Tenderloins.
    • Gather:
      • 20 x
      • 20 x and 20 x to make 20 x .
    • There is also a fair amount of running around involved.

This WoWHead post describes what needs to be done.

    The Plan

I immediately made the executive decision to stock up on this recipe. But these are rarely seen at the auction house. A proactive strategy would be needed: seek players at neutral or higher Brood of Nozdormu reputation, and assist them in the completion of the questline to obtain :

Are you neutral+ with Brood of Nozdormu? Want to make a quick 4000g? PST me!

I was very surprised by the number of players that responded to my trade chat pledges. I carefully explained to them each step of the quest, and what was required of them. I provided the required in the last part of the quest chain. Within four hours I had 3 in my possession. Success!

    Some tips:

    • The Searing Gorge is a great place to farm and simultaneously, if these cannot be found at the AH.
    • Do not waste your time farming. It can be purchased off a vendor in ICC:
      • Party up with a player who has cleared past Saurfang.
      • Enter ICC using his/her raid ID.
      • Teleport to Deathbringer’s Rise.
      • Wait for the peasants to build tents.
      • Talk to [npc]Shely Steelbowels[/npc] to purchase .
      • This can be done on 10 and 25.

Hopefully this will pan out as planned. I'm much more confident about this one than I am with and similar items. If it's of any re-assurance, I checked cooking trainers on the beta server - they do not teach Dirge's recipe. Dirge himself is still in-game, and has been moved outdoors in Gadgetzan. As you can see, he is clearly unimpressed with the eradication of the Chimaerok.

And that's it for today! Again, a big thanks to Cyndez of Windrunner for the tip!

      This makes me think...

What about the meat used to cook this item? Is it worth to farm it?

I am not 100% sure I agree. I mean I understand the concept a rarity and I get that this is a purple recipe. But the example you use (the macaw) are a visible representation of wealth. The tea is also in it's own right useful, your able to profit off the making of it. this recipe itself is not overly useful. I am not saying it will not be profitable but i don't think you're going to be looking at 20'000k+ I mean look at items removed from the game before like Ruby shades... they have been out of the game for awhile and are only going for 3k or so.

I might be totally wrong.... but I just don't see it.

That... Makes sense. The Ruby Shades are more along those lines, since they affect the appearance of your character. However, I also think that some completionists might shell out big cash for these recipes. I wouldn't stock lots of them, but a couple wouldn't hurt right?

It's purple, people with too much money will definitely pay handsomely for it. On my server a few months ago someone held a public auction on the realm forum for this recipe and it sold for about 8000g.

Completionist is the big word here. People often play this game to complete some sort of collection. Armor sets, pets, mounts, recipe lists and soon glyph spellbooks.

Ruby shades don't fit any of those criteria. Thistle Tea is indeed a useless item and there is no profit to be made from it. Your target buyers are rogues - every rogue gets this recipe for free. Quite useless for raiding as well. Yet players will transfer servers to buy it for 30,000g.

Mark my words folks. If this recipe is removed, it'll be big bucks.

Let me also add, Isle of Dread is a Golden Pearl farming spot.

If I was an enchanter with Enchant Weapon - Spellpower, I would consider this.

Edit: Oh wait I am! The value of 29 Spellpower just got a lot nicer.

This recipe will not be removed.

I read a long time ago (just after the nda was lifted) that the questline was removed, but that the recipe would be dropping from a rare mob in Tanaris. I do not remember where I read this, unfortunately.

As the person who sent this off to Sterling yesterday (he can attest as I emailed him what my user name would be upon registration ), i'm glad the idea was well received.

In regards to Nepenthe's post, my only question is : Where can you farm the meat? I don't really see them putting a recipe in the game via a new mob, if the meat itself isn't available.

      Exactly.

Or they might just changes the mats. And the name of the recipe. Recipe: Dirge's Mild Chimera Wings? Probably not.

It seems to me that such changes would be widely publicized and that a google search would immediately pull up proof. I easily found a post referring to the quest chain being gone - but no reference to the recipe itself dropping from a rare mob. A link here would be nice.

      (not saying you're wrong).

Can't say I'm really surprised. You need to be very critical of anything you see, though.

It's in the best interest of anyone saving this recipe to keep the secret from the public. Notice that both of those wowhead users have only 1 comment?

I will monitor Dirge for the time being (I'm assuming he's "the goblin dude"). Wouldn't be surprised at all if I found the recipe on him - this is a tumultuous world we live in.

The only problem is see is if the mobs are gone that drop the meat.. there is no way to actually farm the mats to craft the recipe.. therefor you'll have a recipe that's utterly useless...

But there is nothing wrong with farming for the recipe now, even with the risk of them adding the recipe in on a vendor.

I'm taking the same risk with vanilla rare pets. Some of the mobs that drop certain pets don't exist in cata, but blizzard still may have them drop by other means. Either by a different mob, or by a vendor. To me it's worth the risk to make the big bucks!

I've been going through all the various blogs/forums/news sites I read and I have not been able to find the post I am thinking of.

The only reference I found now is at MMO-champion where they discuss the recipe possibly dropping from a rare elite, but noone is able to confirm it. They do however claim that the island where the meat is dropped is not gone, its only underwater.

What that means for the poor chimaeroks, I do not know. I do not have access to beta so I am unable to check this out.

I've been checking Dirge fairly regularly over the past few days and have yet to see any change in his inventory that would indicate that he's got any limited quantity/rare spawn recipes on him. I'll go check out the island tonight (in about 12 hours, I'm GMT + 9) and let you guys know what's there unless someone else with beta gets ambitious and wants to do it before then.
