The Consortium Addon Series: Chatter Addon (Extremely useful and configurable)

Welcome to the fourth installment of a weekly to bi-weekly addon series for The Consortium Forums.

It's been a while since the last release, my apologies about that. To make it up to you, I have a super duper underrated but EXTREMELY powerful addon called Chatter.

    - Hiding buttons
    - Linking items, enchants, spells, and quests in custom channels
    - Custom aliases for channel names
    - Coloring of player names by class or deterministic HSV formula, and player levels next to names
    - Custom font and font size for your chat frames
    - Custom background, border, and positioning for the edit box
    - Option to let the edit box border color match the color of the channel you are typing in
    - Channel colors remembered by name, rather than by number
    - Scrolling your chat frames with the mouse wheel.
    - Sticky channels, configurable
    - Ability to copy a chat frame's contents to your clipboard
    - Ability to copy URLs to your clipboard
    - Ability to customize the background and border of your chat frames
    - Timestamps
    - A /tt command to send a tell to your target
    - A module that turns the word "invite" into clickable links that let you invite the speaker.
    - Highlights, both for custom keywords and when things are said in specific channels
    - Chat fading toggles
    - Text justification
    - Autologging (Off by default)
    - Alt linking
    - Much larger and smaller chat frames than default
    - A Groupsay (/gr) command to talk to your group, whether that's battleground, raid, or party.
    - Chat Tab look-n-feel modifications
    - Paging through chat tabs with the scroll wheel

Chatter is actually an addon that I only recently came across. WoWConfidential released a review on an addon called TB Chat Enhancements back in 2009, which was an addon that allowed you to highlight specific words in chat.
Unfortunately it was discontinued a while ago and recently while trying to find a replacement for it I came across Chatter, which can do the same thing and SO! MUCH! MORE!

Now I thought having an addon that would let you highlight specific words in trade chat was super awesome as it is, but an addon with as many useful features as Chatter is just mindbogglingly awesome.

The most useful features to me are:
    • Alt Linking: With this module, you can right click someone's name in chat and and set a note on them to be displayed in chat, such as their main's name.

    • Highlights: Here is the famous text highlight option. It allows you to type in a word, or series of words and it will highlight the specific line of chat when ever the word(s) are mentioned. Can also add a sound effect and make it display in your ScrollingCombatText too.

    • Link Hover: This Module allows you to hover over item or achievement links, etc, that are posted in chat and it will display the item tooltip.

    • Tiny Chat: This Module allows you to resize the chat window to as small (or as big) as you want. Can be handy if you wish to make your chat window really small when PVPing, Raiding or you simply wish to squish it into a small part of your already cluttered UI.

    • URL Copy: This is a fairly standard feature in many addons now, but anyways this module allows you to copy URLs that are posted in chat, so you can then paste them in your web browser, etc.

You can download Chatter HERE .

If this is your first time using an Addon, you can follow our guide HERE on how to safely and successful download an addon, how to install it properly and how to keep it up-to-date!
    • Before logging in, I recommend that you first disable any other Chat or communication addons that you might have which could possibly conflict with this addon. Once you have it setup and working you can then start enabling any addons that you disabled, one by one so you can see if any have a problem with it. They shouldn't though.

Anyways, once you are ingame with Chatter Add-On enabled, type /chatter to bring up the config menu.

Now I'm not going to go into high detail, or post a screenshot for every single option. But I will try be as comprehensive as possible for the features that really matter.

    All Edge Resizing:
    • This module alters the way that you can resize your chat window. In Blizzard's default UI, you have to hover over the bottom right corner of the chat window and click the little arrows that appear and then resize it from the bottom right corner.
    • With Chatter, you can simply hover over any of the 4 sides or corners, click and drag.

    Alt Linking:

Like I said earlier, I think this is a really cool feature. This module allows you to right click someone's name in chat and and set a note on them to be displayed in chat, such as their main's name.

    • Left Bracket / Right Bracket: When the note is displayed in chat, it puts a character about the name. By default it will be [ ] but you can change it to what you want here.

    • Use Guildnotes: I believe that this feature checks for guild notes and displays those by default for guildies who come up in chat. If you manually set a note by right clicking on the person's name in chat, then it will override the default guild note. Uncheck this option if you wish to disable it.

    • Alt Note Fallback: If no name can be found for an 'alt' rank character, then it uses the entire note instead.

    • Name Color: The addon sets a default color (which seems to be yellow like quest/achievement/profession links). You can override this color by choosing "Use custom color" from the drop down list and then clicking on the box or text "Custom Color" next to the drop down list to select your own color.

    Automatic Whisper Windows:
I'm actually not exactly sure what this does, but I don't think it's very relevant to assisting you make gold, or helpful at all haha.

    Boarders/Background:
    • This allows you to modify the Chat Window a bit in terms of the borders and it's background color. Can be very handy if you want to design it to fit into your custom UI by changing the color scheme on it, etc.

    • Very self explanatory so I won't go into detail on it, what you see if what you get.

    Channel Colors:
This can be done through Blizzard's Default chat window config (right click on chat window name > settings > profit). So seems a bit pointless.

    Channel Names:
Not really useful, but its fun I guess. It allows you to rename channel names or messages to what every you wish. For example you could change the normal boring:
[G][Sinshroud]: Guild chat here. to [Paragon Guild][Sinshroud]: How awesome are we?

    Chat Autlog:
Self explanatory, it automatically turns on logging of chat instead of always needing to type /chatlog to initiate the logging of chat. I don't recommend this, there are other addons out there where you can set it to turn on chat logging for certain situations (such as entering a raid dungeon or a battleground, etc).

    Chat Font:
Allows you to change fonts of your chat, there are better addons out there to change the font for you with a wider variety to choose from. All I can say is OUCH!

    Chat Tabs:
Enables the chat tabs at the top of your chat window.

    Copy Chat:
    • Very handy, allows you to copy chat from your chat window.
    • Enable both Copy Chat and Show Copy Icon check boxes in this option for it to work properly.
    • Then just hover over the tiny blue face in the bottom right corner of your chat window and click to bring up the chat text editor.

    Disable Buttons:
Definitely a key feature for any sleek and neat UI. It removes the scroll up and scroll down buttons from your chat frame (later on there is a feature to scroll up and down chat using your mouse wheel so don't worry).

    Disable Fading:
Text usually fades away over a period of time and you need to scroll up and then down again to make it appear again. This feature prevents chat from fading away.

    Edit Box History:
Don't know what this does, don't care.

    Edit Box Polish:
"Lets you customize the position and look of the edit box." ... lol. ^

    Group Say (/gr):
I don't really see the point of this but I believe it just allows you to type /gr to direct chat to your party chat instead of /p (some people might get confused, especially new comers to wow.

    Highlights:
And now for the highlight of this guide that you have all been waiting for! (Har har har I'm so funny :P).

It allows you to type in a word, or series of words and it will highlight the specific line of chat when ever the word(s) are mentioned. Can also add a sound effect and make it display in your ScrollingCombatText too, as well as a series of other options.

    • Enable Highlights: Obviously need to check this for it to work.

    Options Tab:
    • Show SCT Message: For some reason it doesn't work if I don't have this enabled, so check that too.

    • Reroute whole message to SCT: This option is up for you to decide. If you don't have it checked the message you get would be something like "Bob said 'tank' in Trade-City" (if 'tank' was my keyword I wanted to have highlighted). With the option checked it would then instead display the message as "Trade-City]Bob: LF Tank for Baradin's Hold".

    • Add word: Is where you enter the words that you want to highlight. Type the word in and hit enter or the okay button and it will be added to the list. You can also shift+click items into the list, but for some reason it doesn't highlight those items when they are shown up in chat.

    • Sound File: You can select a sound if you want it to play a sound when it highlights text.

    • Use Sound: Enables the sound.

    Custom Chanel Sounds Tab:
    • This is to just change certain sound files again.

    Output Tab:
This is where you choose where you want the message to be displayed.
    • Blizzard Error Frame: Is actually that little bit of text at the top of your screen that you see (e.g. "Target it busy" or "You are out of range" or "You can't do that yet", etc.).

    • Chat: This displays the message in your chat window.

    • MikSBT: This is my Scrolling Combat Text, so if you don't have the addon you probably won't have the option.

    • Raid Warning: Self explanatory, displays the message in a raid warning.

    • Sub Section: This drop down list allows you to select different options if applicable.

    • Channel: Displays the message in a specific channel (you choose the channel from the Sub Section Drop down List).

    • Default: Basically displays the message in the first possible place. For example if you had "Blizzard Error Frame" enabled but were getting a lot of the "Target is out of range" errors, then it would not display instantly. This option avoids that.

    • None: Hides all messages from this addon.

    • Sticky: Sets messages from this addon to appear as sticky.

    Invite Links:
This is quite handy, you can add keywords to the list (much like with the highlight option) and it then makes that word clickable (like clicking on an item link etc). Clicking on that link then invites that person to your group.

    Link Hover:
Another fairly handy tool. When you hover oven an item in chat it display it's tooltip as if you had clicked on it.

    Mousewheel Scroll:
Let's you scroll through your chat history using your mouse scroll up and scroll down when hovering over the chat window.

    Player Names:
This provides options to color player names, add player levels, and add tab completion of player names.

You should know how to configure this by now. Here is an example with "Include level" option checked. Unfortunately it only displays the level if the player is near you, has whispered you, you have whispered them or you have /who-ed them.

    RealID Polish:
Not exactly sure what this does... but the word polish leads me to believe it makes the realID pop up window look nicer (I can't see because I'm using an addon that already effects it's look).

    Scrollback:
This allows you to modify how far back you can scroll in your chat window I think.

    Server Positioning:
This allows you to enable and disable server side storage of chat frame position and size. I recommend you leave this unchecked.

    Sticky Channels:
    Leave as it is.

    Tell Target:
Quite a useful feature. If you are targeting someone and want to send them a whisper you just need to type /tt instead of right clicking their name and selecting whisper, or typing their name out etc.

    Text Justification:
Allows you to set the justification of text in your chat frames.

    Timestamps:
This is something that I personally enjoy using. It displays the time that each message was posted in chat, in the chat frame just before the channel name.

    Tiny Chat:
This allows you to resize the chat window to as small (or as big) as you want. Can be handy if you wish to make your chat window really small when PVPing, Raiding or you simply wish to squish it into a small part of your already cluttered UI.

    URL Copy:
This is a fairly standard feature in many addons now, but anyways this module allows you to copy URLs that are posted in chat, so you can then paste them in your web browser, etc.

    Profiles:
Make yourself profiles to save your settings and if you want to have different options enabled on different characters (then you make a profile for each character that is different).

I hope this guide is helpful and the addon it useful to you

LOL Wow Prat has had some serious updated. I've been using Prat for years but didn't realize it had so many features (similar to chatter). Didn't realize so much had been added before I just checked it now.

One thing I didn't see, can it highlight text?

I'm not sure. I know that it can copy text.

I configured it about 1.5 years ago and haven't touched it since. The one problem I HATE about it is that, for some reason, it tends to beak the game after patches and I need to disable it.

Thanks for the great write-up! I will do a comparison with Prat this weekend, and whoever the winner is will reside on my system. I do not know if Prat has highlighting abilities or not.

I've never had any issues with Prat after patches. Have you kept it updated?

I update it whenever it becomes possible to do so. I mean, a patch is released and it takes a whole 2-3 days for an update to come out, meanwhile my poor soul is without a chat addon. If I remember correctly, Prat was causing other addons not to work properly. We probably don't use the same set of addons.

Ye I had that problem a lot too. I don't think it's necessarily Prat's fault. I mean it's very common for most addons to only get updated several days after the patch. Prat is just an addon that happens to conflict with a lot of addons if it is not updated - meaning there is more problems to fix than most addons, hence why it would take so long to update.

Yes, in fact the Prat chat highlight feature allows you to have the message displayed where the Raid Warning messages go, so you can't miss it.

BUT, I don't want to overshadow this guide with comments on Prat, both addons seem to do a wonderful job with chat enhancements, and I am sure if I wasn't already using Prat with a long list of alt names, I would use Chatter.

I dropped Prat for Chatter over the weekend, and was able to drop my memory footprint by nearly 2MB. While not huge, removing Prat got rid of my only non-Auctioneer related memory hog.

I still have to dig deep into options, but the only thing I miss from Prat right now is that you could right click someone's name and do a /who (which was great for people using special characters in their names). Chatter also seems to not have character data on some level, so everyone's name is grey instead of class colored, but I may either have to use it for a while or I'm missing a setting.

    Overall, I'm quite pleased!
