Building an Empire 101 - 5. Time investment and infrastructure

Rate this Entry
Last week I was very specific on Profession configuration, but this week I want to talk about some general observations.

The primary observation is that it sucks being poor and how much easier it is to make money when you already have money. This is true in the real world, but it is also the case in WoW. That is the topic of today.

Status
Lets start with the status as I want to talk based on my current situation.

As you can see, I still don’t make money. Or more accurately; the limited amount of gold I make is consumed instantly to feed my profession leveling.
I am sure someone must be looking at this blog and wondering how a Wind Trader can be stuck with so little cash after a month on a server. “Where is the empire you promised?” Alas, Rome was not built in a day and neither is my little kingdom.

The status is that I now have 4 characters on my way to being maxed and I have most of my professions on the right side of Outland hell. So far I am only missing Inscription and Alchemy on my rogue, but I will not start until he is level 80 as he is dual-gatherer and is feeding his own professions + the Northrend part of JC on another char.

Time investment
My most valuable resource when it comes to WoW is the time. My time available for WoW is constrained by outside factors (work, family, social life etc.), so it is my most precious resource and I must spend it in the best possible way.

When starting from scratch I’ve been faced with a big choice on how to balance 2 conflicting priorities:
* Building infrastructure
* Making money

Infrastructure in this case is characters, professions, guilds, addons etc. In this case I want to spend my time establishing the infrastructure as efficient as possible and not spend a lot of time on making money. The reason is that I believe that time spent making money without the infrastructure is inefficient compared to the potential once a basic infrastructure is established.

When things become hard to explain with words, try with a graphs, so here goes:

Thoughts on GDKP Forum-blog-5-jpg

This graph is of course a simplification of the situation as income doesn't scale linearly with number of characters (with professions) or that the income is 0 without any characters. Furthermore, the graph is normalised so the numbers on the y-axis doesn't make sense.
What I want to illustrate is that time spent making money early is inefficient. Even if I do not make any real gold while building my infrastructure it will still pay off.

This point is further enforced by a few outside factors:
* I am returning to the game so I am out of touch with current trends in the game
* End of the life-cycle of an expansion, so markets are dying off instead of coming into bloom
* Close proximity of MoP launch sets a hard deadline for when I must be ready with my infrastructure

I hope this gives an idea on the priorities to be balanced during the build up phase and explains why I am seemingly not getting anywhere gold-wise

    This is such an interesting series of blog posts. I came back to the game after a two year absence recently and have also had to start over on a server recently, so I feel your pain about the slow start for gold making. I cheated and transferred over my old inscription lock and cashed in on my server's recent glyphmas. Best of luck to you.

    It is incredibly tempting to just transfer one or more complete characters to my new server. I would probably cave if it wasn't for this blog as it keeps me focused and motivated
