Building an Empire 101 - 3. Goal breakdown

Rate this Entry
Welcome to the third instalment of my blog. As you may notice I try to provide an update on a weekly basis.

Status
Since last week I have spent my WoW time on actually playing the game… Upon my return to WoW I have felt the sweet rush any addict feels when they give in to their cravings and shoot up again.

My total gold is abyssal for a Wind Trader with that many hours /played. By the look of this I look even further from my goal than I was last week. However, I am quite happy with my progress even though I am dirt poor and not really getting anywhere. This is due to several reasons:
- I don’t want to force myself to do something I don’t feel like. This is a game, not work
- Due to my limited funds it doesn’t make sense to start investing
- Everything is progressing entirely according to my Master Plan

The Master Plan unveiled
There is no master plan! However, I do have structure on how I want to plan my progress. The stated goal of this blog is of course to build a new empire and document the journey. This is a very big and quite intangible goal, so it becomes nigh impossible to track progress against this goal. This can quite easily lead to disillusionment when logging for the night and looking at the empty check box: Build an empire
Due to my background as a Project Manager I am of course using the tools in that toolbox for anything and everything. It struck me that I was unconsciously trying to fit this into the structures I use at work, so I put some conscious effort into it a will here document how I use a goal hierarchy to structure my “work”.

Goal breakdown
Start out by defining your overall goal, which is easy since it is already stated. This doesn’t have to be tangible or measureable. In my case I will state it as follows:

It is now a matter of breaking this down into more manageable bits. I do this by asking myself “how?” and then add what comes to mind.

How i make my gold-blog3-2-png

I decide to define this as I need to dominate several markets with a presence on both factions. In order to document the journey I choose the blog format. At this point it is a good idea to look at level 2 and ask “Why?”. This ensures that all your goals at a level are critical to the success of the level above. It happens quite often that goals are added out of sheer habit, rather than because they are needed (in the case of WoW it could be Achievements, pets, mounts etc.)

As you dive into deeper details the boxes change from goals to deliverables i.e. the means to reach the goals above.

At the last level of detail I will add the deliverables I am considering

With this level of detail I can track progress on a session by session basis. When I log on I can take a look at tasks ahead and either decide to do the most efficient or the most fun. But only stuff that I have on my goal hierarchy. What is interesting is not only what is on the diagram but also what isn’t on the diagram:
- No PvP (unless it serves to level characters)
- No specification of markets (except professions)
- No specification of planning
Normally the next step would be to break it down to products and start planning the project. But that is too much like work for me, so I want to keep it unstructured

When logging on (or thinking about coming sessions) I can decide based on my goal breakdown what to do and make sure that I produce traceable progress towards my goal.

Status revisited
When looking at the status again it suddenly doesn’t look quite so bad. Nowhere in my breakdown does it say that my goal must increase or that I must have any gold for that matter. I have leveled my characters a fair bit and also stated leveling 2 professions, which is measurable progress according to my goal breakdown.

Another great blog post, seems you are really progressing on your Empire. I see you have alot of goals setup already, isn't that a bit demotivating? For myself personally every time I decided I had to level multiple alts it was always very demotivating as 1 hour of hard work usually was just a very small step with many hours to follow. How do you keep yourself motivated to finish this work?

Also your chart doesn't mention it, but which professions are you going to try to finish first?

    Amazing work

I find it demotivating to have one big goal that I will not reach for months, so I prefer to break it down and pursue deliverables, which together will reach the goal.
I intend professions to be the topic of my next blog, so that was intentional to leave it out

    Cool

Personally I just set 1 small goal at a time for myself, else it doesn't work
