Battle Pets: A quick guide to moving gold between realms/factions.

Battle pets are shared between all of your characters. This means you can purchase and learn a pet on one character, then cage it and sell it on another of a different faction or server. Often, the difference in price between realms and/or factions will be several hundred to a few thousand gold.

I use this method to make gold by buying certain pets when and where I find them cheap and flipping for profit in markets where they tend to be harder to come across. This can also be used as a roundabout way to move gold across factions/servers without the neutral AH or a paid transfer. As an added bonus, the learned pets are stored in your journal, so no hassles with bag space or inventory. You can also use this as way to find good bargains for your own collection, or even just try them out for battles yourself and sell at a later date.

Step 1: Create a snatch list. I use Auctionator's shopping lists for this, since it's just quick and easy. You'll want to put all the TCG battle pets, as well as some of the more rare/expensive drop or token pets on this list. Pets known for having desirable battle abilities (i.e. Clockwork Gnome) could also be added. Be wary with crafted pets, they can be profitable but the market there can be flooded fast.

Step 2: Using this list, scan the AH on whatever realms or factions you have the gold to make purchases on. Unfortunately, battle pets don't show up on TUJ, so you will have to do this manually.

Step 3: Purchase any that seem to be lower then usual in comparison to the other realms or factions you have checked. For TCG pets, 5k-ish or less is often a good deal. I've seen some of the more common TCG pets at 5k 1 day, then back up to 8-15k shortly after, but use your own discretion.

Step 4: Learn the pet, then log into whichever character you wish to sell on. Find the pets you wish to sell in your journal, right click and select "Put In Cage". The caged pet is now in your inventory. To sell it you will most likely have to use the default Blizzard AH sell tab or TSM's auctioning groups since some of the other addons aren't working with battle pet posting at the moment. I would recommend barking in trade after you have posted it to pique the interest of collectors, particularly if it is one not often seen on that realm/faction.

    A few caveats:

-"Wild" pets (ones you battle out in the world and cage) are not sellable, so don't bother going out to collect them for profit. Same with achievement and quest reward pets (i.e. Kirin Tor Familiar).

-You can only have 3 of each pet in your journal at one time. The exception to this is when Blizz first implemented it they had no restriction with the pets your characters already had. So you might have 5 tabby cats, but that was a one time allowance and from here on in the restriction is 3. Also, your pet journal becomes "full" at about 500 total pets. To get more beyond that, you would either have to cage some of the ones you have, or release some wild pets.

-Mechanical Chicken, though sellable when unused, seems to fall under the restriction of other "reward" pets once learned and is not cageable to sell. This is likely due to it being a quest reward, though might possibly be an oversight.

-When moving pets from a high pop to low pop realm keep in mind that while you can get away with a higher asking price, finding a buyer might take longer.

-Vendor pets and holiday pets are not moving well right now, due to people having them on multiple characters and selling off the extras. This market is likely to stay low imho, at least for awhile. This guide is mostly intended for TCG or rare drop pets.

I've heard talk about this before, but nobody has any evidence or even anecdotes that it really works.

What pets have you personally bought and sold on different realms, and for how much?

I can verify that I have personally been doing this. Granted not nearly at the level I'd like to yet simply due to not having any real price data. That being said, so far I've mainly limited myself to the Nether Ray Fry, Hyjal Bear Cub, Pengu, and Crimson Lasher. I'll go buy them on my main from the vendor on Realm A, learn them, then go to one of my alts on Realm B, C, or D and cage them. Once caged I make a TSM group for them and sell them. I have personally sold each one of these pets on different realms for various prices. My last sale was the Hyjal Bear for around 2.3k. I have also moved and sold a few TCG pets across realms but I didn't have things set up very well so I can't give prices or even which ones since I've been buying so many pets to resell.

I experimented with a TCG pet the other day while moving gold from an alt's realm to my main realm. I ended up with about 5k profit from it and it sold within 24 hours.

To anyone that has done this on a larger scale, how long does it usually take you to sell less rare pets, such as ToC pets, blue quality vendor pets, etc, and what size realm are you on?

I'll give it a try, I've been looking at restarting some toons I haven't touched since BC on another server but i don't want to spend any real life cash to get them moving gold wise (they have about 3g between them since my account was hacked years ago)

I bought an Eye of the Legion for 5.5k on a high pop realm today, and was able to sell for 10k on a lower pop realm where TCG pets don't show up as often. I've bought a few others in the 4-6k range that I usually see for 10k-20k, but have decided to keep or gift most of them so far. I've also had some luck with flipping Jade Crane Chick or Gilnean Raven purchased at around 500g for a few hundred extra gold.

I'm getting ready to do it on a large scale. I just finished making my inventory spread sheet so I can track which realm my pets are on. The biggest issue that has been preventing me from going all in is the lack of pricing data. I made a key mistake when I started buying caged pets. I just assumed TSM was tracking the price I paid for each pet correctly, but unfortunately it just lists everything as "pet cage" so I really have no idea what I paid for anything. Without that knowledge I didn't want to start making groups for my pets since I really have no idea what to set my price floor at. I was also hoping that Blizzard would include caged pets in the API for TUJ and Wowauction could get pricing data. I've been waiting and waiting and now it looks like I'll either have to wait a very long time or else just consider all the gold I've spent already as sunk capital and just start fresh, cataloging how much I pay for everything manually in my spread sheet and just doing my best to come up with my own prices for everything.

I've been doing this as a small side project, mostly just to see if it was viable. Seems to be working well thus far, but I'm interested in hearing your results on a large scale level, jimbodan.
I'd like to do a TSM posting list at a later date, but I don't have my groups set up yet except on some of the more common pets. I'm hesitant to do posting groups since prices can vary drastically, so I wanted to wait till I can get a better idea of what the "average" should be.

I have a project toon on a high pop realm that I play with and I've been using it to bring back rarer pets to my lower pop realm, however no sales yet. Honestly, unless the gold is needed on the other server, this really doesn't have much of a plus to it short of trading someone on another server for that pet you really want.

I'll definitely let you know how it goes. I basically started this idea as a way for me to move gold from my main on a medium pop realm over to an alt on high pop realm in order to get TCG pets and mounts. Unfortunately most of the good deals were on the high pop realm that I wanted to move gold over to so I ended up spending a ton of gold over there and ended up with far more pets then I'd be able to sell on 1 realm. 46 giant sewer rats, 18 guardian cubs, 40 mojo's, 41 spirits of summer for example. I've now decided to spread myself over 3 high pop realms. I've already made alts and gotten enough gold to handle posting costs for awhile. Next step is just to set up my groups. Unfortunately that's the hardest part.

I've been debating on whether to set up each pet individually (right now I have 91 different unique pet types) or else try and group them into maybe 10-20 larger categories for similar pets. I too have been waiting and waiting hoping for some sort of pricing data but I just don't see it coming anytime soon so the only option I have is to completely forget about what I've spent in the past and just start manually recording what I pay and set myself some price limits on everything and then just make my own prices. So far the easiest pets to price have been the more common TCG pets. I try to buy most for around 5k and I've found they will reliably sell for around 10k. I usually shoot for closer to 15-20k though.

If I can figure it out I'll try and export my my TSM pet shopping list and post it. I feel like I could use some help refining it a little bit, I'm also afraid I might be missing a couple of the newer MoP pets. What I did was just look through my pet journal a week or 2 after MoP and just type in anything that I remembered being somewhat uncommon. Since I had every non-TCG, special event, or pet store pet available at the time I think it should cover just about everything pre-MoP.
