I powerleveled Alchemy yesterday from 525 to 600. For me the key to getting to 600 was discovering the Transmute: Trillium Bar recipe. Once I had that, it was a breeze because 1) Ghost Iron Ore will be the most abundant crafting item, 2) this transmute doesn't have a CD, 3) it gives 2 skillups per craft, 4) you can get skill points from it all the way to 600

Some anecdotal thoughts. It seemed that whether or not a discovery was made was more aligned with the chances of a skillup than anything else. When I was crafting Alchemist's Rejuvenation at first, I was getting a skillup about every 3-5 crafts and getting a discovery at about that same rate. Once I got to 539, the Alchemist's Rejuvenation seemed to stop giving skillups (even though it was green); I crafted about 40 of them at 539 with no skillups and no recipes learned. But as soon as I changed and crafted Virmen's Bite at 539 (which was yellow), it gave a skillup and a discovery.

Here's my record of what was discovered as I leveled:
    @525
Trained these recipes: (Making these gives a chance to learn other MoP recipes)
    Alchemist’s Rejuvenation and
    Master Healing Potion

Recipes I discovered from making those two (in the order they were discovered):
    Darkwater Potion
    Virmen’s Bite
    Elixir of Mirrors
    2^ Flask of Winter’s Bite
2^ Flask of the Warm Sun
    Elixir of Perfection
    2^ Flask of Spring Blossoms
    Elixir of Weaponry
    Potion of Mogu Power

    @539
Started crafting recipes I discovered above

Recipes I discovered from making above recipes:
    Monk’s Elixir
    Mantid Elixir
    Mad Hozen Elixir
    Elixir of the Rapids
    Master Mana Potion
    2^ Transmute: Primordial Ruby
    2^ Transmute: Wild Jade
    2^ Transmute: Vermillion Onyx
    2^ Flask of the Earth
    2^ Transmute: Trillium Bar
    2^ Transmute: Sun’s Radiance

    @570
Started crafting recipes I discovered above

Recipes I discovered from making above recipes:
    Potion of Luck
    2^ Flask of Falling Leaves
    5^ Transmute: Living Steel
    2^ Transmute: River’s Heart
    Potion of the Mountains
    Potion of Focus
    Potion of the Jade Serpent
    2^ Transmute: Imperial Amethyst
    Elixir of Peace

At 600 alchy it was gray made 20 and learned the 2 recipes I didn't have yet.
No one is disputing that both the Healing Pot and the Alchemists Pot have that text.

In my post (and in Utesdad's post that follows) we are positing that creating that pot after its grey gives very small chance to discover a new recipe. You learned 2/20, while I learned none from 40 combines of Healpot and none out of 30 combines of Alchpot.

My point is, that people with many alchemists chasing trillium/living steel recipes might be in for a bitch ride.

    @UtesDad
counting the number of combines, you discovered 9 in 525-539 combines + 11 in 539-570 and + 9 in 570-600 combines? thats about 1 in 2.5 skill points. Do you know how many combines overall did you make (assuming yellow and green ones didnt procc every time)?

Because in my 3 alchemists I had nowhere near as much luck as you did. Maybe I went over the orange/yellow points way too fast.

Not sure if I was lucky or what, but here's what was crafted in going from 525-600:
    Alchemist's Rejuvenation x63
    Virmen's Bite x20
    Mantid Elixir x21
    Primordial Ruby x4
    Trillium Bar x8
    Living Steel x1

So I decided to try this again to see if maybe I was just lucky in getting the Living Steel transmute when I did, and to my surprise, I got discovered it even earlier than I did the first time.

    Here's my results:

    525-535
    Crafted Alchemist's Rejuv x34
Here's what was discovered during these crafts:
    Elixir of the Rapids
    Elixir of Mirrors
    Potion of the Jade Serpent
    Mad Hozen Elixir
    Desecrated Oil
    Potion of Focus
    Master Mana Potion
    Elixir of Weaponry
    Elixir of Peace

    535-560
    Crafted Mad Hozen Elixir x37
Here's what was discovered during these crafts:
    Elixir of Perfection
    Flask of Spring Blossoms
    Mantid Elixir
    Flask of Falling Leaves
    Flask of Winterís Bite
    Transmute: Vermillion Onyx (at 550)
    Darkwater Potion
    Transmute: Living Steel (at 560)

Strangely enough, I learned the Living Steel transmute before the Trillium Bar transmute.

Another thing I noticed is the rare gem transmutes weren't learned before 550 (similar to my first round)

Here's a screenie that confirms it:

@UtesDad , thanks for the testing. I love the concept of discoveries as long as it is not a huge pain to get the one you need. This way there is a bit of luck involved, but basically it seems that you get everything on your way leveling, it is just the order that changed.

As of today on the beta:

Gems - [Transmute: Primordial Ruby], [Transmute: Vermilion Onyx], et. al. have been implemented and DO NOT currently have a CD
Metal - [Transmute: Living Steel] has been implemented and DOES currently have a daily CD
Elementals - not yet implemented in the beta and from today's blog post, is not anticipated to be in MoP as SoH are the new volatiles/primals

Current Cata alchemy transmutes (ie [Transmute: Living Elements], [Transmute: Truegold]) are still on CD in the beta are share cooldowns with the MoP transmutes

Just to clarify, having a SoH doesn't actually remove the cooldown, but there is an alternate way to create Living Steel, which uses 3 SoH and does not have a CD: http://mop.wowhead.com/spell=130326
