Lightbulb Summer Vacation - What's the impact?

Title pretty much says it all. What effect will tens of thousands of bus-fulls of middle and high school kids arriving in Azeroth have on the Auction House?

I think this could go two very different ways but for the same reason: kids just don't understand the value of money and time (and time IS money, friend).

I imagine auction houses could be flooded with insanely underpriced goods as the kids farm and maybe craft their items... because items they didn't have to pay coin for are "free".

I also imagine that demand could increase for enhancement items like gems, glyphs, enchantments, and maybe PvP gear because the kids will be leveling, getting gear, and so forth and don't necessarily understand "value" so they'll pay whatever the market asks as long as they have the gold in their coffers.

Those are my musings anyway. To you more experienced Goblins, what have you seen?

    Couple things I would expect:

1.) Increased supply of general crafting supplies & commodities on the AH... will likely cause at least a small decrease in prices

2.) Increased demand for crafted gear, both PVE and PVP.

3.) Increased profit potential due to #1 & #2... lower prices on commodities, possible steady prices on crafted items due to increased demand. Worse case, prices of crafted items decreases a bit too, but with increased demand, you may sell more of those items than normal, which results in increased profits anyway.

4.) Increase in chances for more rare items to be listed on the AH, at potentially dirt cheap prices due to the lack of awareness by the "kids" or lack of caring enough, since they got it off a mob resulting in "no cost" to them.

The above is pretty over-simplified and high level, but I see the sudden influx of more players a good thing for us goblins who know how to benefit from this.

Think of it this way... these kids are likely NOT going to pay attention to upcoming patch info. So, with 4.2 coming AFTER school is out and the influx of kids has already begun, we will likely see alot more crafting supplies like Volatiles, Savage Leather, Embersilk Cloth, Elementium/Obsidium Ore & Bars, possibly Truegold, among other items. If they drive prices down more because of this prior to the patch, that's a great opportunity for us to by up their cheaper items and stockpile for 4.2. Then, as demand spikes due to new craftable PVE & PVP gear, we'll be the ones supplying alot of it at higher prices, resulting in potentially huge profits.

I see this as a win-win situation for us.

Basic scenario is raiding markets down, alt markets up, although the last few years due to the ease of pugging there has been less of a decline in raiding markets than usual but i would say this will see a more pronounced drop again this year as pugging is more an exception that a rule again in cata.

"It's weekend everyday" also applies, well not totally true but in markets where there is an imbalance between the week and weekend there is a much less dramatic effect.

And yea, should say this too... when they buy up the PVE & PVP crafted gear, they'll want gems and enchants for the gear too. Enchanters & Jewelcrafters REJOICE!

Also, I can see the kids wanting to take advantage of the Bastion of Twilight BOE trash drop runs. This would mean an increase in the supply of these items, but also more chances to snag the BOE items at cheap prices to flip for profit. Not to mention the other BOE epic world drops in Cata... some of those more elusive epics could become available to us at really cheap prices since the kids won't know what they normally sell for. Imagine the possibilities... 5k or less prices on things like:

    Just to name a few

Do you have a source on new craftable pvp gear? They have not ever released a second set of craftable pvp gear during an expansion.

    Thanks!

Check out ptr.wowhead.com, under each crafting profession. Blacksmithing, Leartherworking & Tailoring all will have the existing crafted PVP Gear upgraded to the next level (iLvl 358 I think it was). Jewelcrafting and Inscription are getting several new PVP crafted items (relics, rings, necks). All of it has been datamined.

Since it isn't exactly clear from the professions list of craftable items, will existing 339 Bloodied PVP gear be automatically upgraded to the Bloodthirsty 358 PVP pieces, or will the pieces need to be crafted again?

I assume they will need to be crafted again since I've never heard of Blizzard automatically scaling gear with the release of a new patch, but again it isn't really clear since it looks like crafters won't be able to craft the old pieces anymore either and moreover the new pieces seem to have the same mat requirements as the old ones.

I would doubt existing gear would automatically be adjusted to the higher item level. There would be too much whining from players who farmed the honor & conquest points to get the higher iLvl PVP gear. Granted, that doesn't necessarily mean Blizzard wouldn't do it, but they haven't done it before, like you said and I don't see them doing it ever.

Just like the Cata world bosses loot... the blue items they dropped pre-4.1 didn't get upgraded to the epic items they now drop. The items were completely new items in the database.

Cool thanks for the link. I guess this will make it easier for new pvp toons or re-rolls to gear up.

Plus it means more sales for crafters too. Some people who more casually PVP may want to buy the new gear to replace the old 339 gear. I'll happily supply it.
