Mostly I'm curious because I was making a new macro and I noticed one of my old macros from cataclysm where I was advertising to buy Heavenly Shards for 100g a piece, right now Ethereal Shards go for 55-60g each on my server. The difference in price struck me as odd seeing as generally prices go up with expansions, barring different drop circumstances of course. I don't have much experience with stockpiling for long-term investments so I'm not sure if my logic here is valid but it seems like as an expansion progresses there are fewer and fewer blue quality drops, due to later 5 mans dropping epics.
If this is the case it stands to reason that the prices of shards would also go up, so is it worth stockpiling these for a year down the road? Blizzard is already changing up the status quo from the last 2 expansions by not (or possibly not? I guess this isn't certain yet either) offering catch up gear with the new raid teir so it's possible that future 5 mans will drop rares instead of epics.
