    4.0.3a Cooking Opportunities

I posted this on the official forums, since it is borderline exploit, but it almost certainly won't be fixed. Once 4.0.3a goes live, but before Cataclysm is released:

    1. Collect Chef's Awards on the main character and purchase recipes. Minimum of 6 awards required, since this technique can't be used for Lavascale Minestrone (Lavascale Catfish are caught inland). 9 awards are even better, since that won't require using Northrend dishes to reach 475.

2a. Every secondary character or guild-mate runs dailies for crates of meat, the contents of which appear to be tradeable. (Aside: Dailies require level 10, cooking skill 1. Almost worth rolling some alts, if you have slots available.)

2b. Coastal fish are caught from Uldum and Twilight Highlands, by standing on the border (all coastal fish are for 500-skill recipes, hence the need for 2a). (Aside: Volatile Water can (very slowly) be farmed like this to.)

    3. Place Chef's Hat on head and boil for 3 minutes.

If 4.0.3a goes live at least a week before Cataclysm is released, this allows 525 cooking to be reached in a matter of minutes once Cataclysm is released. Aside from that, there are loads of short-term farming/reselling opportunities here, which I'm sure regular reads to this forum will make light work of.

There's some fun stuff lurking around cooking skill 250:

None of Gikkix's recipes appear to be available on a vendor. So straight away that looks like a stockpiling opportunity for those non-bound recipes.

Longer-term, this means that leveling cooking with fishing relies on the Filet of Redgill recipe, right up until it goes grey (which is painful), or waiting until Summer (the recipe for Hot Smoked Bass is still available), or relying on meat: Clamlette Magnifique (from the old 225 cooking quest) is potentially a solution, but not a good one, since it is merely green at 275, and has a lengthy quest attached. The best solution is Bear Flank: Both Charred Bear Kabobs and Juicy Bear Burger will carry your cooking through from 250 to 275 very effectively.

So, flag up Bear Flank as an auction house special. But it gets better. Blizzard have crit'ed themselves:

Felwood's old Horde camp at Bloodvenom Post has been over-run, and now there's no sign of the only Horde vendor for the Charred Bear Kabobs and Juicy Bear Burger recipes (I've checked all the vendors in that zone). However, Alliance can still buy the recipes at Talonbranch Glade. Ergo, we not only have a stockpiling opportunity for Bear Flank, but a cross-faction opportunity for those 2 recipes.

Naturally, these issues are so serious they will be fixed fairly quickly - we're dangerously close to cooking becoming impossible to level - certainly well outside the comfort zone of the average forum QQer. But short term things are looking very interesting for a profession that almost everyone levels.

If this goes live I'll dawn my fishing gear and catch a few fish for fun. Maybe list them for some High in the sky apple pie price.

One thing to maybe check if anybody has beta. Do the worgen/goblin's possibly sell the required recipes to fix this issue? I suppose a check of cata.wowhead.com Might give some answers?

Already listed a few of the Cataclysm cooking mats for ridiculous but affordable prices...going to farm fishies now.

If you are not going for realm first chef, the dailies can be very profitable to do by selling the meat crates on the AH for those looking for it - so keep an eye on that market.

    In the latest hotfix notes:

"Players can no longer catch new high-level fish when fishing near level 80-85 zones unless the account is upgraded to Cataclysm."

But ironically, the cooking vendors are still selling crates of meat, which as of this morning can be opened and looted by characters without Cataclysm.
