Exclamation And there goes the Obsidium Shuffle...?

I've just seen the news on the datamined spell change on MMO-Champion.

    Jewelcrafting
, , , , , , , and any cut of uncommon gem now sells to NPC for 75 silver instead of 9 gold.

That's fairly damning for the larger majority of the people doing the Obsidium Shuffle, takes the floor price down from ~54g to a paltry 4g50s on Gems, or 5g for the Ore / Bars.

    Ouch.

I don't think it will entirely kill the shuffle as I personally take full advantage of my professions with the Shuffle. If anything I hope it will force a slight increase in the price of enchanting materials as the supply could go into freefall as people no longer believe the shuffle to be worthwhile.

What do you all think? Will the price of Obsidium come even further down to compensate? I suppose only time will tell, but hopefully there will still be a niche to explore!

If that's the only change, it's not as bad as you state, but still pretty bad, as the current vendor value of the uncut gems is 5G, giving a floor value of 30G.

Because of this, I think that either the uncut value will also get slashed, or that 75s isn't a final price, but a working value while they try to figure out just what to do about this.

Do you think this is a warning to shufflers that Blizzard doesn't like what they're doing? Or a shot across the bow at the bots that are selling the ore "cheap" to attract shufflers?

To be honest, I think it's more to control inflation. If you're DEing as part of your shuffle, you're getting gold from other players, so not increasing the total gold in game. If you're vendoring, then you're directly increasing the gold in the game.

EDIT: Of the threads that I've seen here announcing this, this is the only one that didn't start off with "datamined info is datamined" or some other disclaimer to that effect, so I think we're all aware that this may not actually be happening.

My plans are pretty much the same as yours. DEing is always an option, but I already vendor more than I DE just because I can't move as much dust/essence as I'd be getting. I shuffled 10K ore in a weekend recently, and two weeks later, my enchanter's mailbox is still overflowing with stuff that I haven't needed to DE yet because I have enough inventory as is.

The shufflers weren't vendoring the gems, they were using them to produce enchanting mats. That part hasn't changed much - our only loss will be from losing the zephyrites.

What this will do is remove the prospect-and-vendor crowd from the market. Without their demand to prop up prices, the market will now drop down to whatever price makes sense to the shufflers and gemcutters. This change annihilates most of the prospecting bots, and will chase out any players that aren't committed to the full Monty of cutting gems and disenchanting jewelry.

While losing the easy gold may be painful, returning us to the no-holds-barred donnybrook of the WotLK gem market is going to be a lot more fun that what we have now.

I was one of the crazies who posted in another part of the forum, but i'll keep my thoughts here for the sake of containment

I will certainly be dumping all but a stack of each color (2 stacks of carnellians) asap as well as moving my shadowspirits.
I'm also considering dumping off some of my rare gems that i had stockpiled, as i'm sure those prices will dip as well (although its hard to imagine them going any lower on my server then they already are).
As for the shuffle, i dont think this will kill it, i just think that we'll have to figure out other ways to use it. Right now i DE almost everything i prospect anyway, and i doubt this change will reach as far as the enchanting market. If anything this will make making carnelian spikes easier.

Actually, I see the reverse happening (sorry for those that saw this theory in a different thread). Right now, I do the elementium shuffle to convert time into rare gems on a very large scale. Too large a scale to be able to operate selling dust/essence. With this change, I either need to find a way to move more dust/essence, or the cost of the rare gems becomes more than just my time, which means that the price I'm willing to sell them for will go up.
