    Is the Sky Falling?

I was talking to one of my friends via RealID, and we were discussing the current state of a few markets. He mentioned one particular person, who it seems is setting out to destroy the cut rares markets -- or at least it seems.

Apparently this person went on an alcohol fueled posting binge last weekend and managed to drop the major cut rares to half their price or less.

Normally, I would just sit back and wait for the market to reset, but others seem to be pushing prices ever lower. Since 26 Feb, cut reds are either even with uncuts or lower. Popular orange and purple cuts went from 80-100g to 30g, and cut greens are down to 13g each.

What bothers me is I can't get a handle on whether the market will reset at some point, or if competition is going to keep prices where they are currently.

    -------
My personal feelings are that there is a bit of a gear wall right now, where demand is at least starting to level off, if not decline. Raids on my server are getting into the tougher heroic content, so new gear isn't flowing as readily as it used to.

That being said, the current situation still confuses me because I feel paralyzed to sell the gems I already have cut. This is not the first time I've felt torn because I feel if I sell now, prices will rebound, but if I hold onto inventory, I'm going to watch it drop further.

I'm just not sure what to do here. Sell the cuts and run the risk of missing out on some gold, but at least make back *something* or hold onto cut gems and risk watching the market depress further.

I'm aware that these markets will naturally decline, but this is a steep dropoff.

On fast-selling gems I reset the market about twice a week. Namely the three red cuts. If their price drops below 120g I buy everything up to 180-200g and start relisting. It's a safe bet with quick-moving items, but not worthwhile for blue/green/yellow gems, but it's sometimes worth it for a few demonseye and ember topaz cuts.

These crashes are happening because of bots farming ore. I have seen no sign of Blizzard doing anything about it, but then they keep schtum on matter's like this. It's pure speculation at this point: If Blizzard do a bot-ban-wave the price of ore will rise and bring gems with it. If Blizz do nothing then you are looking at the new par for your server.

It looks like the reds are starting to reset, so I may start using your tactic in the future, Herf. My experience in other markets makes me wary about trying to reset it (I once tried to reset NW bags by buying out underpriced bags and cloth....it didn't go well), but you don't learn if you don't try. Good points, though!

I notice that yellow and blue gems cuts on my server are all in the 60 range. Despite my attempts to reset they always go back down. Some as low as 25 gold (amberjewel cuts). It really irritates me because I dont really want to have to buy out 20+ gems to reset it to a better price when they sale slow already.

Blues and Yellows are a lost cause. I picked up the Spell Pen cut this morning just to see if it would help me actually move some of my blues. I wish Stam wasn't on EVERYTHING so it would at least be worthwhile for me to pick up the Solid cut; easily my best seller in Wrath.

What price is solid for you as solid has always been a low priced huge mover in all expansions?

When it comes to certain colour being driven into the ground this doesn't really matter as long as you can make a profit over all. I happily sell large numbers of yellow gems all the way down to 10g and will be willing to go lower to get rid of them as i still make a profit overall through other gems. In fact i will happily go as low as cut to vendor, it simply doesn't matter.
In cases like this where you get random loot you always look at overall profitability rather than individual items. DMC is another example of this where stones cards are basically worthless now but as long as you can make a profit from selling the other 3 decks it doesn't matter if you give them away really.

I totally feel for you guys on this one! On my server, the popular cuts are all under 100g, even reds. While I hate posting cut red gems for 70-80g, I'm still making a huge profit considering that I buy my Ore at under 50g a stack. Greens, Yellows and Blues are regularly in the 10-40g range and I slowly sell them everyday so that my bank isn't totally overflowing with them. My philosophy is that I like to maintain a lean type of business practice. I hate having tons of inventory because all it does it take up space. I am happy to sell my crappy gems for as low as 10g because that way I'm moving product and still making a small profit.

What I have been doing is accumulating as many green, blue and yellow cuts as I can to aid in the process of liquidating this inventory. If you have more cuts available, you have a better chance of selling your stockpile of crappy gems and sometimes they even sell for a pretty penny (hooray for Tuesdays!) Orange, Purple and Red gems sell well, so I don't see the need to have as many of those cuts.

Solids I believe average around 8g.

Crap happens, I'm just venting a little. I'm still trying to find someone willing to sell me ore in bulk at under 60g/stack; current prices hover between 65-70g on most days, but those prices only hit that low in the last two weeks. Before that, both ores were in the 80-100g/stack range.

I do basically the same thing on my server, except Orange cuts don't seem to sell as fast as Purple and Red so I have a larger selection of cuts for those. I also tend to accumulate Topaz faster by adding transmuting onto prospecting.

Even at 8g that is above vendor prices so you should sell them in bulk to shift them.
