Is Alchemyx2 worth it in the long run?

I've got an 85 toon with mining, and I'd like to drop it. I thoguht about leveling alchemy on him, but have an alchemist already (lvl 73 .. getting there). It would mean that, in a few days time, I'd have two max-level alchemists.

In the opinion of the fine members of this forum, is having 2 alchemists, presumably for the CDs, worth it in the long-run, or am I spending my money for nothing on that project?

with living elements alone its "worth" having the unused profession slot on an alt.. just planting him in uldum, and logging 2 minutes a day nets me 2-300g a day.. after a week you pay for the leveling, past that, its pure volatile profit...

What level is your mining at? The smelting "flip" can be very profitable if you can acquire the ores/mats cheap.

The mining is at 525, but I've never smelted on it beyond what I needed for myself or guildies.

I've checked out the various ores/bars on our AH, and there seems to be at best very minimal profit on smelting. ON the other hand, prospecting has proven very, very valuable. Right now on the AH there are about 150 stacks of elementium for 45-55g/stack. However, that's all beside the point.

Basically, I'm looking for something to do with that spare slot once I drop mining. I also thought about inscription, but would only be insterested in milling. The glyph market scares the bejesus out of me.

Milling alone can be quite profitable, plus you get access to Mysterious Fortune Cards and Darkmoon Cards, depending on your server's AH. I rerolled on a new server and took up inscription; once I hit 425 I started buying stacks of Cinderbloom for ~80g, converting all Blackfallow into Inferno Ink then selling those ~200g each.

If your definitely dropping mining then alchemy isn't a bad choice to replace although i would suggest a different profession if your lacking any others before gaining multiples of a certain profession to allow you to expand your horizons as much as possible.
    Are you lacking any professions?

I've currently got maxed out: JC, Enchanting, Blacksmithing, Mining, Engineering. Alchemy is waiting for the toon it's on to get to 75.

As I said, inscription itself doesn't interest me too much. Mining and Eng. are the same toon. I make zero gold from the engineering, and I don't plan on trying to, but also don't want to drop it. I have a sentimental attachment to it.

So really your missing tailoring and leather working. Have you actually looked at those markets on your server and how much potential do they have for profit?

I would have to say that it is. It gives you 2 transmutes a day, and it may give you a jump into a new market: flasks/gem/CUT gems(if you have a jc)/potions.

leatherworking is good for profits only if you have a good number of wotlk reps as bags are still in demand... tailoring will always have slow and steady stock bag profits (kinda missed the cata launch on the bag market)... the problem with tailoring is spellthreads are a hit and miss market.. and require some babysitting... if you have a simply extra profession slot, and want the most bang for your buck on an alt... alchemy is it.. since it really is a login, transmute, logout, once a week move it all over to main / ah.. etc...
