Gem market normalizing...your strat going forward?

Well it appears that, on my server at least, the raw gem gravy train has pretty much come to an end. I was making 15k a day just prospecting ore and selling the raw gems, but that has all but dried up. It appears that the leveling jewelcrafters who were buying up the uncommon stones have finished their business and moved onto raiding.

Right now on my server, the average price of a raw uncommon gem is 17g, and they aren't even moving at that price. Raw rares are averaging 42g. Unfortunately, ore prices have not come down in a similar fashion, still hovering around 100g/stack.

What HAS picked up are sales of cut rares, as people have started picking up more and more gear with sockets. I'm typically getting 75-200g apiece depending on cut and competition.

So, now that the market has begun normalizing, how are you JCers planning on making your money going forward?

    I'm considering several different options:

Plan A (least time invested, least profit potential) - Simply buy raw rares and cut them. Profit.

Plan B (more time, more profit) - Buy raw rares and cut them. Buy jaspers/alicites/carnelians below some threshold (15g maybe) and jewelry them to DE for dusts/essences.

Plan C (most time, most profit) - Buy ore and prospect it. Cut rares. Jewelry/DE jaspers/alicites/carnelians for dusts/essences. Hope to sell nightstones/hessonites/zephyrites, possibly also making jewelry to DE from excess nightstones/hessonites if they don't move.

Up to now, I've been operating under plan C, but I have to admit, the the prospect/jewelry/mail/DE is already beginning to get tedious. That is a lot of clicking, even with macros.

I'm thinking that if Plan A can make me a few thousand gold a day then I may just go with that, as the time investment would literally be 5 minutes a day aside from posting/cancelling.

My plan is to use a variation of Sterling's spreadsheet that I'm working on and work the numbers til I find an agreeable solution somewhere on a sliding scale between your A, B, & C.

Remember that people are starting to raid. Expect the traditional money-makers, & to sell like garbage during week, while people are raiding, but to sell well on the weekend, while people are doing other things like leveling professions. , , and will also spike in demand when the JC daily hits.

As for 15k/day, I can't imagine it. Surely, you must mean revenue, not profit? Even then... volume hasn't been that high on my server for a few weeks, now. I usually rake in ~3k /day from glyphs, gems, and lowbie gear right now. Enchanting mats are hawt right now on my server, though. I've been trading favors / abusing a guildie for mass DE, since my enchanter is still L60.
Retired - I blame Kathroman for everything.

    (that's a joke, eh)

I had a 3 day span at the very peak of things where I made at least 17k PROFIT per day, the majority of which came from raw gem sales. Now, I was also cutting some gems, transmuting some metas, transmuting truegold and/or volatiles, and even selling a few enchantment scrolls.

That was several weeks ago, however, when the average (lowest) price of an uncommon gem was around 55g, and they were MOVING at those prices. I could get 200g+ for a raw inferno ruby. I was buying pyrite ore for 350g/stack and making almost 300g profit per stack. Life was good. Things were easy. To be completely honest, that gravy train lasted longer than I thought it would.

    I wish.

Uncut raw gems are hovering around 10g across the board. Ore has already hit the "price floor" of 2.7g per / 54g a stack for Obsidium ore I'm buying up any ore I can find below this price and throwing it into my GB hoping that the miners are going to go farm herbs instead soon and the price will either recover or I'll just prospect/cut and vendor gems in another month if nothing happens.

Seems on my server everyone and their dog and his pet bone has gone with JCing and the market is absolutely flooded. I'm spending my JC tokens on i346 jewellery and will sit on the rest of them until the new meta cuts are out.

Enchanting mats are plummeting as well as a bunch of players are making up rings etc to disenchant at 35g per at 8g per still stacks of ore arrives in the ah daily and prices are driven down further.

I am basically getting the hell out of the market, stockpiling ore that I buy at below the price floor, shipping out the cut gems I have already on daily day as well as flipping some of the stock in the ah as I'm usually online at the time the new JC daily is annouced, and I'm grabbing my daily token each day.

Thats it for me right now with JC - I'd rather focus my time elsewhere as I limit gold chasing activities to an hour or so a day.

The JC market on my server is also getting really bad. Every gem is aggressively undercut, and all uncut gems sell very cheaply. Im looking for a new market to go into as this has been my primary money maker up until now. What are some markets that are doing well?

Being a goblin noob, I'd been hoping for a post like this to come out. My server's gem market has plummeted, too, and was looking to some of you veterans for a transition plan. Thanks for the post!

Just the market settling down, there is just a HUGE oversupply of raw ore coming onto the market on my server. Eventually this is going to all but stop and supply and demand will hit some kind of balance, tho what the prices will settle at is anyones guess.

Short of Blizz altering the vendor pricing for cut green gems expect both Obsidium and Elementium ores to stay above 60g a stack tho the price will fluctuate a lot. Perhaps once the 4.0.6 changes to crafted items getting extra slots more crafted items will be in demand and demand for cut rare gems will also increase. Once every other man and his dog decide that hey JCing isn't really all that great and shift professions to something else then prices for rare gems ought to recover, tho the "daily day" spike for common gems will get less and common green gems ought to eventually settle around 9g each.

I think JC was way overhyped so everyone decided to get this "very lucrative profession", because of that early demand for uncut common levelling gems was stratospheric, which in turn drove more people to farm ore (as well apparantly on my server as there being several big mining operations) possbily as the herb market is always competitive. Some weeks later there are gems of all types flooding the market and the only profitable sales at present are some of the meta cuts, and i346 jewellery. The jewellery doesn't shift quickly tho so lots of gold is tied ip in stock but the margins on it are good and I really really wish that the text they were desribed in was purple and not blue but hey. Inferno ruby cuts will stay profitable as demand for red gems outweighs all the others tho competiton there is very fierce.

In the meantime apart from keeping half an eye on the markets and keeping up with the tokens I am doing much better selling raid items (flasks and the like) and my enchanter is doing stunningly well with abyss crystals and WotLK enchants as well as the "2nd best enchants" which lots of people are using it seems on their blue gear rather than spend hundreds extra for a small increase for the BiS enchants. I just make sure to keep a close eye on mats prices for cata enchants and not keep too many of them in stock.

Just make sure you have a diverse range of things you can do and it's all fine. The easy money gravy train just after cata is over for sure though. I'm still happy to pull in 5k or so a day for about an hours effort.
