Prospecting Pyrite JC's new best friend?

I found that on my server was going for nearly the same price as Elementium ore I assume its due to its limited need in things and the mass flooding of pyrite bars on the AH. The two main advantages of it are that you need to be 525 to prospect it meaning less people buying it and lower prices. Also it gives you 1-3 per prospect.

I am findind this to be fairly profitable and wanted to share it and find out what others are experiencing with it.

I made around 2600k on my server profit on 4400g worth of Pyrite Ore so its a great investment now the trick is getting large amounts for a good price.

Whoa!! This is an incredible tip! After reading this, I hopped onto the remote AH and found Pyrite ore selling for 199/stack on my server. I bought 45 stacks at that price. With 1-3 volatile earths PER PROSPECT, the earths ALONE could recoup my investment!

The fact that Pyrite also have a higher chance of popping rare gemstones is just icing on the cake!

This is incredible insight this early on and quality research. +1 rep from me there.

Legitimately then we should be investing our coin into this material as you will definitely recoup the investment and make a profit.

Great tip - it also depends on prices, obviously. On my server, Elementium Ore is at 7-8g, whereas Pyrite is at 10-12g. But Pyrium BARS are selling for 30-35g. Green gems at 25-20g. So it actually makes more sense to sell the Pyrium bars, or the ore, outright. But if the prices fall a little, I can see this is a great source!

DH prices preclude this by a long way but it's a quality catch - enjoy it until your server catches on

While waiting on the queue I calculated the return on it. The ore is going off at 10-12g per over here. So procs:

    1 green proc: 80-100g
    2 green proc: 160-200g
    1 green, 1 blue proc: 80-100g + 100-200g
    2 blue proc: 200-400g
1-3 Volatiles: 25g per, I fail at that math

    Investment for 20 Pyrite: 200-240g
    Worst case: 4 green gems, 4 Volatile Earth: 320g+100g=420g-240g = 180g profit.

Betting this is what you'll find.

    Sold. Thanks!

Very nice catch. I'll be watching my server to see if prices change, as of now I'd be looking at a loss of 40g per stack of pyrite, assuming worst case scenario.

Wowhead has drop numbers for ore now:

Obsidium - 23.5% chance at each green gem, 1.25% chance at each blue gem.
    Elementium - 18% green, 4.75% blue
Pyrite - 16.7% green (exactly 1 per), 8.3 % blue (half of prospects give a blue).

Also if you pair this with alchemy, the blue gems and volatile earths will generally break you even. Then using the green gems to transmute metas and create a much larger profit by selling them raw and cutting. I have made about 10k over the last day, sadly i drained the AH of pyrite ore so it did slow down for me.

Keep in mind prices are plummeting so investing to much into this will be a bad idea and will generally come to a loss of gold.

    Let's go one better...

Add an alchemist for all the green gems to make the blue gems and you have insta win.

I just found this out while finishing out alchemy. Paired together a miner+jc+herbalist+alchemist is going to be REALLY stupid OP strong because there is NO COOLDOWN on Alchemy transmutes when making blue gems.

    Have fun!
