Everyone wants a quick fix. No one wants to work hard anymore.

So here is the story. I am on a small server for 5 years, Azshara, I have millions of gold.
I have plenty of toons, I have every profession but engineering and archeology, 4 alchemists, 2 jcs, and I make more money right now with inscription/blacksmithing and jewel crafting. I had two independent conversations with different people, they both had about 1000g , and they both were amazed that after 5 years of playing I had 7 million gold. I told thim, this is my hobby, this is what I do when I get home, I check prices all day long on theunderminejournal.com at work and buy them on my iphone remote auction house application. I mill and prospect forever. I do my best to learn TSM , install the TSM application so every hour my TSM has up to date prices and it lets me know what to craft. Simple Easy Peasy stuff. Both players had exactly the same response. They said, thatís too hard and too long, I want to make a lot of gold really fast.
Its amazing to me that in the real world people are the same way, whatever I have to do to make a lot of money the fastest easiest way. The honest answer in life there is no easy fast way to go from $1000 to $1,000,000. Through buying and selling. Its hard work. Its trial and error. No one sat down at wow the first time and figured out everything in 20 minutes.
I now have both players farming cloth , herb and ore, its slow for them and I am over paying what I could wait and force a lower price. My goal really is to help these players understand the auction house. They feel if they list anything and it doesnít sell in 48 hours. Itís a disaster, a travesty. I have thousands of auctions, TSM tells me at anytime the value of all the goods I have on the auction house at any time, its consistently over 400,000g worth of items on the auction house. If two thousand sell, I am not bitter , I am not angry, I am happy that I have 2k more gold then I did 24 hours ago. Keep in mind I have had days of 50k in sales, so the point is to keep trying, level as many toons with as many different professions as possible. Nothing comes easy, There is no shortcut to millions of gold in warcraft. You are going to have to read and try and ask questions and google those answers because people are wrong or worse lie intentionally.
I told two people on my server, hey I am on stormspire.net , jimmyolsenblues, I will help you. Neither one contacted me. People just donít want to know its hard work and they have to learn. It is really a wonderful lesson in life that warcraft has given me, even though it stole the last 5 years of my free time.

Yep, I've had much the same experience. People seem to assume there absolutely must be some really simple, easy secret to making gold. I get the impression the answer they're looking for is something along the lines of "go farm here for 20 minutes a day and you'll have gold pouring out of your ears in no time". Telling them it's a bit more involved than that doesn't seem to hold water, and they go off in search of the holy grail.

To rephrase an old hunter joke, they all want a sporebat.

Yes! Someone was whispering me on a level 90 a few days ago because they saw all the auctions and figured I was loaded. They mentioned the same as OP, only have 1-2k, and they asked how they could make gold so I obliged and asked what professions they had. None. /facepalm

I think that there's some strange misconception in a lot of the player base that you can make a lot of gold from dailies. Okay if you have to do dailies because you need the rep, fine you're making some extra pocket change, but by no means is it more useful than a profession.

Going back to the story about the guy with no professions/gold (Priest) I told him he could farm dungeons pretty easily for all the cloth he needed to level tailoring in a few hours. "Nope, too much work". Okay then.

Sadly this is very true and not just restricted to gold making in WoW, people expect their toon to hit 90 and be showered in purples without putting in any work. I was brought up to learn that if you wanted something in life you needed to work hard for it, and if you don't noone will want to even help you try to get it.

I will help folk like this by attempting to teach them the basics so they can start to help themeselves, the ones that listen and respond to that advice I have the greatest respect for. Those that don't I know will be my customers parting with their gold because they are too lazy to go do it themselves and ultimately make me richer.

Ultimately it is these lazy people feeding us for our gold addiction so we don't want to cure them all

A lot of people want gold but don't like the gold game. They like the "actual" game(raiding/dungeons/pvp/pet battles etc), and that game needs gold to get ahead. People want to spend their time playing that game, and still make gold while they are at it. It's a different mentality than many of us who treat the gold game as a major part, if not the only part, of the game we pursue and enjoy.

Something else you said as well @jimmyolsenblues is that people don't want to work hard. This is the thing, WoW is supposed to be people at play, not at work. If doing the gold game feels like work, people don't want that. To me, figuring out the tricks, setting up add-ons etc is fun because I know what I'm getting out of it. It still feels like a game, not work.

And yes, I agree. When you have so many auctions up on the AH it becomes a numbers game.

After you post it tells you the sum of everything you currently have posted on the AH, it's not actually evaluating what it's worth per say, but the sum the buyout values of what you posted.

jimmyolsenblues: This would be because the vast majority of people have no idea what it takes to be successful. "This is a game", etc are common objections. Yes, and it reflects real life. The same principles apply. People are basically mediocre. If everyone was still competitive and patient, there wouldn't be millionaires like us walking around. It takes too much work. Too much thought. Too much striving beyond the mediocre.

Shameless plug for my blog discussing these types of topics.
