Banned for "Abuse of the Economy"

For some reason, my account has been banned (I've appealed the ban and am waiting to hear back from Blizz).

    ************************************************** **************

    ***Notice of Account Closure***

    Account Name: ************

Reason for Closure: Terms of Use Violation -- Exploitative Activity: Abuse of the Economy

This account was closed because one or more characters were identified exchanging, or contributing to the exchange of, in-game property (items or gold) for "real-world" currency. This exchange process negatively impacts the World of Warcraft game environment by detracting from the value of the in-game economy.

Even if this behavior is the result of a third party accessing the account instead of the registered user (for example, a friend, family member, or leveling service) then the account can still be held responsible for the penalty because of the impact it had on the game environment.

We've found the above behavior is many times directly related to groups responsible for compromising World of Warcraft accounts; we take these issues very seriously."

    ************************************************** ************

Now I first want to say that I am 100% legit. I have never bought gold nor do I have any need or want to buy it.

The ban I believe is in relation to a transaction where I sold a Spectral Tiger for 250k gold to another player. The trade was done 'face-to-face' to save on AH fees.

I also heard of another player getting banned for the same reason. In this case, the player bought a Crimson Deathcharger off me for 105k.

Maybe it isn't such a good idea to sell tcg mounts anymore...

I've heard of a lot of people getting banned for trading excessively large amounts of gold, most commonly with the Darkmoon Fair Decks/Trinkets at the beginning of Cataclysm when they were worth like 50k each.

Good luck with the ban appeal.
I renamed your thread more appropriately btw.

    Thanks for that.

I'm a little worried now because even when I get my account unlocked I still have two Big Battle Bears and a Mottled Drake which I'll have to sell, I don't really want it to be locked again.

Getting unbanned shouldn't be a problem. Like Sinshroud said, you didn't get banned for trading a spectral tiger specifically, only for trading a large amount of gold. This sets off WoW's crappy gold seller filter and pretty much autobans you. Appeal and you'll be playing again soon.

I'd happily trade 1-2 days of downtime for those item's worth in gold. In anycase its possible that once it has happened it is less likely to happen again. I wouldn't be surprised if Blizzard use some sort of tracking and attribute system that they can give to accounts. For example if they know you do a lot of large LEGAL amounts of gold trades, then they might flag your account as an exception so you don't get banned each time.

I know they do something similar for Multi-boxers. Its quite the norm nowdays if you start multiboxing 3 or more characters, that you report yourself to a GM to notify them that you are a multi-boxer, so that they can much more quickly deal with all the "omfg dude this guy is like totally hacking and warping into 5 different characters at the same time wtf ban his ass dude!" kind of reports.

So they must have some sort of system in which they can attach notes or attributes to your account for other GMs and even their automatic systems like Warden to detect and assist them in evaluating what to do next.

That's pretty nerve-wracking, considering a lot of us here likely are involved in similarly large transactions. I hope you get your account back soon.

Out of curiosity, how long after you sold the spectral tiger did your account get banned? I sold one last week for 200k, so now I'm a little bit nervous.

I have heard of other people doing the same thing - notifying a GM beforehand. I believe the system works something along the lines of flagging an account that moves gold beyond a certain threshold (ie. 30k), so if you let them know in advance, they might be able to "pre-unflag" your account.

And it's funny because when ever you do that it looks something like this:

Player: "Dear Blizzard team, I have a couple of high-value items that I am going to be moving in return for gold over the next few days, and I've heard many stories about people getting banned accidently for moving huge amounts of gold. Please don't ban me."

Blizzard: "We don't ban players of making large ingame legitimate gold transactions, you have nothing to fear."

5 days later: "Dear Blizzard, please unban my account >.< "

(ok the last 5 days later part was a joke, but I know they normally give that kind of response to those kind of tickets)

Lol. It's worth at least trying, isn't it? I'm not saying you should expect the world from Blizzard, but you can't hit a home run if you don't swing, right?

After some reflection, do you all realize how much influence we as a group have on Blizzard's game policies? Something as seemingly insignificant as an in-game trade policy can be heavily influenced by the amount of gold in the economy, and hence the influence comes from the gold we make as goblins. As a general rule, there is more gold in large quantity among this group of players than in any other cross-section of the player base. The sheer amount of gold generated via our activities is directly affected by Blizzard's game and economy design decisions for any given patch cycle, and to some (varying) extent the reverse is true, too.

TL;DR: It sounds like the policies on gold trading (amount that triggers a warning) may need to change, and our goblineering can be a catalyst for that.
