Ways to make farming more efficient

I've found that the following have helped immensely when I've been farming.

Bigger (and emptier) bags - Obvious, but important
Traveler's Tundra Mammoth - Being able to sell off gray (and BOP) items is a huge time saver
    Jeeves - The engineer's alternative
Argent Pony Bridal - A way to send the rest to your banker
    MOLL-E - The engineer's alternative

Are there other things people use to make farming more efficient?

Timing! I prefer to avoid farming during peak hours.

I agree with the timing thing. My biggest success espicially with Herb farming is not in peak hours. Although Frost Lotus does seem to drop easier when the server is at its peak for farming. Also knowing a good route helps. Gather is a necisity in farming to keep track and follow a good route. I know there are routes out on the internet that are decent but its not until you actually look at your own stats that you can find a good route on your own. I have a pretty good route for herbing that leads me through 4 zones in Icecrown but allows me to pull almost any herb you would need. The tundra mammoth does help to its nice to be able to off load greys. Also for people with a class specific bag, hunters quivers and warlocks soul shard bags, make sure you take those off you when you are farming for the extra bag space. Less trips back to a major city defiantly is a plus.

The engineering Hand mounted Pyro-Rocket has an insane range on it, which helps with herding mobs together for quick aoe deaths.

I hide chat and put up /DND with a little note to friends that I will get back to them soon. Chat was always the reason that I cut short farming- a friend asks for a dungeon run, WG premades, guild shenanigans etc I use my two level cap toons for farming herbs and ore and am also the GM of my guild. If I am DND my officers deal with whatever arises and I am left in peace to fly in loops. If something is urgent and needs my attention then they invite me to party to contact that way.

It's probably a really obvious thing to do but I used to get so frustrated when I had settled in to a good stride around a zone and I'd start getting whispers from 10 different people wanting to chat or group something and I'd waste precious time responding. Especially in peak time when my only advantage against farmers on my tail was druid insta-flight.

Know your route/map. For example, if you're farming in Icecrown, make sure you've done the Argent Dawn quests that phase you so that you can see the mailbox. That'll save you time in offloading. Especially if that character is only a gatherer.

If I feel like farming, I always try to incorporate a mailbox into the route. It doesn't have to be perfectly on your route, just as long as it's close by for you to quickly detour and offload.

Use a paladin for 20% mount speed increase, a druid for staying in flight form while picking herbs/ores, or a hunter to use your pet to attack a mob that's standing next to a node.
Of course this wont apply to everyone though.

get Routes and learn to set it up. Video Tutorial and Web Tutorial.

You end up with maps in game like this which can be turned on and off depending on what you are farming

it even shows up on your minimap making it easy to follow

Sort of on a little bit of a tangent here, but it is very relevant to farming!

I've heard that the human brain can really only think about one specific thing at any given time; now you could be thinking about several things, but in very quick succession or repetition. To counter the boredom resulting from farming, I throw on either a massive playlist of my favorite music, a string of very long podcasts (Call to Auction/CASTaclysm..etc), or a playlist of Youtube videos that can run behind WoW. This allows my brain to be free from the monotony of farming, and thus I can be more efficient at farming due to the fact that I can go for longer periods of time.

    Routes addon is FANTASTIC!!

An addition on music.... at least for me, soothing music works better than Angry music.

If you're like me, you'll find yourself much more aware that you're doing boring farming/grinding when someone's screaming into your headphones.
