Can You Level to 85 by FARMING? YES!

Ok, so I thought I'd post a (not so) brief summary of my leveling to 85 purely by gathering. No quests, fewer than 12 mob kills (purely defense), no dungeons, etc.

The day they released the pre-cataclysm patch that allowed dual gatherers - and offered Experience for gathering - (4.0?), I dropped a half-leveled BS from my Miner, and replaced it with Herbalism. (DUal gathering is a NO BRAINER - you can only gather with ONE TOON AT A TIME, so why not put both on the same toon? This decision we critical for leveling). I was level 77 1/2, and decided I would try it out. After suffering through the levels until I could gather and , I took off for Storm peaks, and level from 77 to 80 without ever leaving, killing anything, or doing a single quest.

My priority for the Cataclysm launch (and it still is) is gold making from farming, pure and simple. As most, if not all the popular bloggers and writers have stated, right now is the most important time to be a gatherer for wealth making purposes. And I already planned on doing that. A realm first would have been nice, but I know realistically there can only be one, and it's not easy to do now matter how fast you are.

3am EST, with cataclysm installed and ready to go, macros created, keybindings tuned, gathering routes printed out and posted behind my display, I was off and running. I followed Kaliope's "realm first" guide for Mining, knowing I might get it, and also I would pick up Herbalism along the way. I started in Dalaran, picked up the Illustrous training for both, and then headed off to Icecrown. Hit 470 Mining (had the +5 Gatherer enchant on my gloves) then headed to Storm Peaks, and Herbed until 495 (this later proved to be THE mistake that cost me Realm First mining). My plan was to go to Twilight Highlands, and you don't need 495 Herbalism to gather .

I hearthed to Ironforge, then flew to Twilight Highlands, and started the route. i was at 520 when the Realm first hit. DaMMIT! And here's why I missed it - the time I wasted in Storm Peaks leveling my Herbalism could have / SHOULD HAVE waited.

Anyway, long story shortened right here, I farmed every day anytime I could play, and I was getting 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8k per gather, depending on my rested XP or not. I hit Level 85 on the 9th day after Cataclysm. I have a job and a family, so I'm sure I could have hit it sooner otherwise.

The real question on everyone's mind is probably, wow, how much gold have you made? Ancient Chinese Secret. Ok, well over 100k gold. Just from flying around, hitting my 'F' key (for Fly), right clicking, then hitting my 'F' key again.

It can be done. Be patient. Be diligent. Have a goal, and stick to it.

So this know-it-all sees me in Ironforge (hearthing for the night), and says something to the effect of, "Hey LOSER - you're level 85 and wearing level 80 Greens and Blues? Are you a complete idiot?!?!" I just logged off. Smiling. ;-)

Nice accomplishment =) I briefly entertained this idea shortly before Cata hit but decided against instead because i thought it would get extremely boring and honestly i wanted to see all the great work blizzard had done with questing and phasing. I still did a ton of herbing/mining though and i wish there was some way of tracking how much XP i did get just from it. I managed to hit 85 by just completing all ofHyjal and Deepholm and only maybe 1/4 of Vashir'j and 1/4 of Uldum and maybe 10-15 dungeon runs so i know i did get a fair bit of XP just from farming. Did this on top of hitting 85 on my pally first. Oddly enough i find farming a bit more boring now not seeing that little +8k xp popping up =P

Could you do 5 (when you can first pick up mining and herbalisim) - 85?

    That'd be a mission...

I beleive that would be called insanity =X This reminds me of reading about a guy that leveled from 1-70 in Modern Warfare 2 without ever killing a guy actually now that i think about it. Someone should do this though and stockpile everything they got in a guild bank and see what it's worth would be. If someone would consider doing this i imagine it would be a lot easier now with all the new node/herb additions in all the Vanilla zones.
    85 Paladin Enchanting/Jewelcrafting - 85 Hunter Herbalism/Mining - 83 Shaman Inscription/Alchemy - 75 Deathknight Tailoring/Jewelcrafting - 10/25 = 2k Gold, 1/23 = 100k Gold, 3/6 230k - Thank you Consortium forums!

Well at least do it with a Tauren for the +15 Herb racial and a +5 glove enchant =P

was thinking of doing it via a miner/herbalist with only input from my main will be to buy some huge bags and maybe fund the guild bank.

Gentlemen it looks like the challenge is on. I will also try and do it with 80 days /played too (which shouldn't be a hassle) in the style of Philias Fogg.

Watch this space for updates, will be starting a blog to follow my exploits!

Would you guys want me to leave it as ore or am I also allowed to smelt it into bars?

I did mining to L81.5 then did a mix of unlocking zone quest (so I can unlock the teleport to the 5 new zones from Org/SW) and running dungeons.

On a lesser geared alts, I'm at L81+ purely through archeaology and resting him whenever he's back to normal-mode XP. With the new gear level requirement, this toon will have a hard time keeping up in dungeons and with more questers than quest mobs, I rather /wrist with a blade of grass than to constantly tag mobs as they spawn.

I was doing this on the miner and on the herbalist. I got to 83 on the miner and then realized - I could do this until 85, for certain, but then I would have to go back and do all the quests just so I could open up the factions and get some gear to be able to run dungeons and even kill mobs at my own level efficiently.

What was most annoying was flying over the Elementium Mine in Twilight Highlands and seeing all the underground nodes being completely untouched and available and flying over all those Pyrite nodes in the phased area, only to watch them disappear everytime I flew by. And then hearing tales of Rich Pyrite mines being available freely in TB, it was just too much. So I'll be 85 tomorrow on the miner - half of it from mining, the other half because I'm a greedy and impatient S.O.B. and decided to quest. I figure I'll hit 85 and immediately get her into full 333/346 immediately which will make that Elementium Mine all the more delicious.

I'll probably end up just questing the druid to 85 afterwards, too. I figure a few dungeon runs on it and I'll be back up to par for the gear (he is still in 264).

Grats on that grind. It's almost another Insane.
