Question about the BMAH and max bids.

Some day, in my wildest dreams, a Mimiron's Head may pop up on my BMAH. I am willing to bid gold cap on it to be sure that I get it but something occurred to me. The bid increment keeps climbing. 10k item? Bid at least 500 more. Someone outbid you? Now you have to bid 1000. (Those aren't the actual numbers but you get what I'm saying.)

So then if it's percentage based is there a number I can bid under gold cap (Say, 600k or whatever) that makes it so that the minimum bid is over gold-cap, thus not able to be reached and thus I am not able to be outbid?

    Interesting question..

Even if people here gave you a magic value like 950,000.. would you really want to risk it? First person to put the 999,999 gets the item...

No, you're able to type in any amount you want to bid on said item as long as it's above the bid from what I could tell. I.E the bid was at 20k, I instantly raised it to 50k, and then a guy bid 51k.

Funny you should mention Mimiron's Head. It recently popped up on Norgannon BMAH. Its sold for 500k. I didn't get it

Interesting question for sure. I'd love to know the answer. I have no evidence on which to base this, but here's my thoughts:

I don't believe that such a number exists. I would think that even if someone had bid 999,998g the next person would be able to come along and bid 999,999g simply because that's what Blizz has programmed to be the max.

However, if such a number does exist, it is very likely to be close to 999,999g, I'd guess somewhere in the 990k range. At which point, does it really matter?

I seem to remember seeing something about the minimum bid being current bid + 5%. This would suggest that the max bid required is 952,380g95s24c as the bid that is 5% above this is 1M and cannot be placed. I haven't been ble to test it, even at lower values, with a bid of less than +5% as there hasn't been anything interesting for me to bid on.

    Can anyone confirm the theory.?

Ok, I did some tests just now knowing that it would be safe for me. A guy from my guild wanted the wrists T3 so I went there to bid on purpose knowing that I'd be outbid and stay on the safe side ^^

I'll include some screenshots and try to explain my process.

On the first SS is how the BMAH was before I bid on anything. The inicial bid allowed was 14720 and I tried to bid only 14230.

on the Second one is the window to confirm the bid. Once I confirmed the bid, no gold was taken from me at all.

On the 3rd SS you can see that it kind of did not accept my bid. The button with the blue arrow DID NOT light up until I changed the value to 14720 (red arrow), which was, what I assume, the bare minimum bid allowed.

I hope that helped a bit.

    Cheers

Nice experiment, but it still does not prove that inputting the maximum bid of 999,999 cannot overwrite any lower bid, including the 952k+ someone mentioned previously. IE: maybe the 999 999 bid overrides everything else.
(Besides, if you're willing to pay 952k, why not 999? Except if you wanna mess with someone else's head, which is kinda fun, but ultimately only serves a purpose of saving a fraction of gold you are already paying. )

Safest way is to try it out on the PTR, since money is no object there.

Well on US-Illidan we have a Mimiron's head up and immediately someone bid to max. I guess the max bid is 990000 since it won't let me bid above that price =\

@jouissance It kind of does and it doesn't at the same time. It doesn't because I cannot test the hipotesys with a high value item and there was no way I'd bid 952k+ on a warrior T3 Wrist on my warlock... I mean, I'm a bit nuts but not that much lol

On the other hand, it sort of proves that the minimum bid has to be at least (or close) to 5% of the current bid (14030 * 1.05 = 14731.5 I just don't know how it got rounded down to 14720).

To make a really conclusive test we would need to do, like you said, try on PTR or take the chance when out beloved item appear on the BMAH.
