Official dupe information & discussion thread - What you should know about it

With the rise of the dupes across many servers, and the numerous threads that keep popping up I figure it would be best to consolidate some info about it all into one post for the community's viewing pleasure, and keep the discussion contained to one thread so everyone can see what is going on.

    How exploits work

    1. Simply, exploit is just another word for bug; except, it is abused in a malicious way, or in an unintended way. They are methods that allow you to trick the server into doing something it is not supposed to. These are usually fixed by monitoring how they are done, and then adding checks against these.
    2. Exploits can occur from the simplest things. Sometimes, the smallest bug you find can be used in another method to cause a huge exploit.
    3. Exploits do not require server side access. This is a common misconception.
    4. Sometimes, they just can't be fixed unless someone is observed during the process or it is leaked.

    Dupe Information

    1. Dupes are currently hitting servers in "waves". There doesn't seem to be any indication of where they are specifically coming from, but they're more than likely gold selling companies that have purchased an exploit on how to do them. There was an exploit leaked a couple weeks ago that was fixed immediately. It seems that there is more though as the waves keep happening, and in more volume than they were ever before.
    2. Exploits for dupes can work for various items, or only certain types such as: Stackables only (Queen's Garnet) Single use items only (Mounts, etc)

Blizzard's stance at this time that has been observed

Blizzard has seem to of gone with the "If you know it's too good to be true, don't do it. You won't get anything back if we see that you knew that." when they remove them from your inventory you will be SOL with no gold returned. 8/9/2012 It seems this is no longer happening for a while now. It seems they have no plans to do anything against them or they are waiting. This means..

    1. If you are falling under that category DO NOT BUY VIA TRADES You have no claim to ignorance if some level 1 just handed you several [Reins of the Crimson Deathcharger]. and 200x [Queen's Garnet].
    2. Buy only VIA AH. You have 100% claim to ignorance if you buy a batch off when they remove them from your inventory. They will more than likely refund any gold you spent on them if they remove them
    3. They don't seem to be acknowledging that these dupes exist. Anyone with TUJ, and common sense can tell that they are happening.

Honestly, it is suggested that you avoid these, and report them. It is really not worth the hassle, and it is hurting the economy. If you do indulge in these dupe waves keep in mind that Blizzard can at anytime change their stance on this, and start punishing the players that buy this stuff in mass.

I've been wondering how that works for a while. Someone showed up with about 300 Queen's Garnets on my server a few weeks back. I was talking to a GM and asked him how on earth it would be possible to farm/hack accounts to get 300 of them, especially as this is no doubt happening on other servers too. His reply was rather vague, something about hackers working on huge networks to generate the stock. He said that 300 hacked accounts out of 10.5 million really isn't that many. I guess the GM had a point, but he seemed very reluctant to discuss it further. He just told me it would be a good idea to report them if I see them in future. Interestingly, he didn't remove the gems I'd bought (lucky! I wasn't aware that GMs will do that!).

As to buying from the Auction House, you're 100% right. When the ore bots hit big time I asked two separate GMs (one on each account) if I could end up with a ban if I bought the ore. Both GMs told me that I'm free to buy as much I like.

I haven't seen much duping on my server (that I know of), only one time and it was only obvious in hindsight. I bought I think 43 queen's garnets off the auction house for around 3000 g each, not long after 4.3 came out. I snagged them all, then immediately put in a GM ticket saying that that was a suspicious listing, I was leaving the gems in my bags, and if they needed to take them, please replace with the money I spent. I heard from a GM the next day basically thanking me for reporting the suspicious account, and he confirmed that I could keep the gems.

I've been regularly (the past 2 weeks) buying up waves of elementium ore and then reporting names that had posted an inordinate amount of ore. As the other posters here have indicated, you can pretty easily plead ignorance if you only buy through the auction house. I figure it's win-win for my server. Well, me. OK my server too. I'm swimming in more ore than I've been able to process, but there is less and less ore being posted. I'm seeing elementium ore being posted in small amounts for 90+ per stack (it got as low as 50ish). Fortunately (I guess), I can't process the ore fast enough to flood the gem and enchant mats markets, so I'm just slowly releasing stuff and watching my competitors duke it out.

You can read my thread at mmo champ (same user name), i bought 200 of them, 180 which I did not cut were removed, I could sell one stack which yielded exactly 8114g profit.
The GM basically warned me in his mail that the can also take actions against "players involved in this".
He acknowledged that they were dupes (he used the word dupe in his mail to me).

Won't touch trade chat epic gems for now any more. What makes you think, that if I buy them from the AH nothing will happen or that the gold will be refunded? I could tell the gem seller to put them in the AH for me, what then?

TBH I am starting to get nervous about TCG Mounts as my server has seen a huge upswing in them. We have had 4 Swift Spectral Tigers in the past week with 2 in 24 hours. All for 290k. We also are seeing all TCG mounts a little more frequently and about 6 Crimson Deathchargers for 40K .

To give a reference the previous month we had 1 Swift Spectral and 1 Crimson Deathcharger. So something really doesnt add up.

My friend speculates maybe the Chinese have suddenyl started dumping stock due to scroll of resurection creating a demand for WoW gold plus the Spectral mounts that it rewards maybe effecting the price Spectral Tigers will sell for in future. However TBH I am thinking the Duped mounts is just hitting my server big time and TBH it has me worried as I bought 1 Swift Spectral and 2 Deathchargers at the start of the week before this trend became so glaringly obvious I had to come to consortium to see if anyone was talking about it!

I can live with the deathchargers being duped but I will be very sad if the spectral tiger I have been hunting forever is now removed!

There was a blue post on this that said if you buy 200x QG from a guy in trade, advertising at half of the auction house price, and "it's too good to be true" that they might not refund the gold anymore, along with some posts here for people who had them removed and had to go through several tickets to get their gold restored.

When you buy off the auction house it's sort of a different story because you can claim "i didn't look at names, i just bought cause they were cheap". You aren't hand to hand trading this guy so you have 100% more claim to ignorance than you did if some level 1 just handed you 200 of them.

Well now seeing Tabard of the Lightbringer being sold repeatedly for 85K . Seems the duplication problem is about to get out of hand on my server.

When we had the big bot rush on my server a couple of weeks ago, I was buying ore and reporting bots like mad. I asked a GM if it was ok for me to buy the cheap mass ore from the AH or if I'll end up banned. I asked the question on both my accounts, and both GMs said that I can buy as much cheap ore from the AH as I like. I think I still have the emailed response kicking around somewhere.

well, against my better judgement i bought a stack of QG from a level 1 guy in trade. i bought them for about 25% under the AH price, so I wonder if I can use the "it could be legit" argument, with the discount for a bulk purchase.

if u cut and liquidate them asap, then it's harder for them to take action?

Buying from a level 1 in trade you can't claim ignorance? lol. I have a level one alt that I bark things in trade for 5-15k on a regular basis. A lot of people's bank alts are level 1s. I realize where you're coming from, and that you're right, it just seems silly for Blizzard to take this stance.

Either way, I haven't seen it at all on my server, other than random Queen's Garnet barking in trade, but it's for like 10-20% below market price usually, and gems move slowly on this server so I don't blame people. Haven't seen or been notified of any mounts being sold at those prices.

*EDIT* This post made go back and look through TUJ to see what rare mounts HAVE been selling for...........

..... and then I realized I didn't have any of the rare mounts on my TUJ notification list. Complete fail on my part. Wow. Looking back over the last few months, though, all the prices are ordinary. Only rare mount even on the auction house in the past 2 months is a and , for 120k and 95k respectively - which is pretty normal for my realm.
