Interesting Info RE: Chinese Gold Sellers

It is generally accepted fact that most of the Gold Sellers are Chinese, right? Well, I ran into an interesting scenario on my server that might be worth looking out for on yours.

I have been dealing with a competitor who seems to be doing the ore shuffle. He sells cut and uncut gems, and scrolls, along with a few other misc items. His main AH toon camps the AH, undercutting. According to TUJ, he posts an average of 16 hours a day. I also have never seen his character so much as flinch from his AH "spot". I'm sure he must grab his mail sometime, but I've never seen it.

Anyway, I've been keeping a closer eye on him lately, since I have been leveling my JC and am about to dive into the market. I've been competing with him in Scrolls, but the deposit costs on gems are obviously much higher so I wanted to get a strategy worked out beforehand. What I noticed, was that all of his auctions seemed to fallback at 8's. For example, 788g88s, or 188g,88s. This might not seem like very useful information, but my wife and I spent a considerable amount of time within a predominantly Asian community a few years ago, and I know that the number 8 represents good fortune and prosperity in the Chinese culture. People were very excited for us when the house we moved into was #88 (double fortune).

I promise you I am not making this up, go ahead and google/wikipedia it, but when I saw his fallbacks, it instantly confirmed my suspicions. Based on his AH patterns, I figured he was probably botting, but I wasn't sure whether he has doing it for himself or to sell the gold, but the 8's sealed it. (I also had a random whisper in what seemed to be Chinese a few weeks ago, didn't mention that yet)

This might seem like completely useless information, but I don't see any reason not to store it in the back of your mind, just in case.

You could mess with him and post all your stuff with 4's.

I don't know how much good that would do, then I would be bringing the bad fortune on myself. If I could somehow calculate his undercut amount and set it up so that his auctions ended up at 4's, that would be better. I just reported him, though, that would be WAAAAAY too much work. Funny, but too much work. I wonder if it would spook him...?

Only if you are the superstitious type (and Chinese) would you be bringing bad fortune on yourself. I figure, if he's superstitious enough to post everything in 8's, then seeing his competition posting 4's would definitely cause him to stop and think.

Given all that, reporting him is a better bet.

It's beyond superstition. It is a deep rooted, culturally-held belief.

That's true and should not be understated. If you want to have some fun with him, you could use some of the combinations at the bottom of the wiki page.

You might be on to something... They take this stuff pretty seriously. My wife and I were watching a local network show about first-time home buyers, and there was a young couple once where the woman was Chinese, and the real estate agent took them to a house number 4. My wife and I jokingly remarked about it being a deal-breaker, but then when they went to one of those 1-on-1 camera segments, she basically said as much. The number 4 was pretty much the only thing she didn't like about the house. At the end of the show, they ended up buying another house.

Just out of curosity. What exactly did you report him for? Nothing in your post suggested a bot. Chinese? Maybe. Playing too much WoW? Definitely. Bot? Insufficient Dataz.

I got another wierd message today from someone who may have been probing me for botting. "LOL, why are you wearing a dress?" Keep in mind my toon was female. He didn't bother to respond to my answer. /shrug. It seems like I get a couple of these wierd messags a week. I'm tempted to learn some chinese. Normally attention makes me delete auction toons and make new ones. But the thought of some idiots thinking they got another chinese farmer banned is just too much for me at the momment.

I did say it was an average of 16 hours a day. That in itself is highly suspicious, leaving only 8 hours a day for ANYTHING else, but when you factor in server maintenance and the fact that there would be blocks of up to 20 - 25 hours, I think that is more than enough reason to have Blizzard take a closer look. I don't need to prove anything - that's not the point of the system. I just need to prove suspicion and let Blizzard handle the rest.
