    Volatile Life prices

The volatile life market on my server since 4.06 has gone from 5-6g to 11-12g and I am just not understanding why. With the high herb spawn refresh rate I thought these should be down in the 3-4g range. I need them for my Volatiles transmits and the price is killing my profits. For some reason the Airs are stuck at 35g still. Thoughts on this?

Flasks require 2 more volatile lifes per flask. Every Alchemist is probably going to use 50 volatile lifes also to craft a new alchemist stone. Those are the only reasons I can think of. (DMF makes prices go up also but that isn't for weeks)

You have competition. Living Elements uses 15 v'life per Alchemist per day. For players with multiple Alchemists, this adds up fast, even more so if they're buying extra against future lean times. As Truegold prices fall, more Alchemists will switch to Living Elements, especially with the 4.06 nerf/buff that makes bonus volatiles more visible. As you said, it's a 345g profit even with your horrible prices, which is likely far more than they're making with their other transmutes.

You've described me as well. Multi alchs and I buy in bulk for leans times. Been keeping my eyes open for weeks since 4.0.6 and no luck. Have to buy the expensive stuff in a few days I guess. I don't have tons of competition with my volatiles. I sell them all every day. Thought maybe something else was at play.

I did notice a spike in prices during the last Faire, and another spike shortly afterward (banwave?), but prices are one the way back down here. ("Down" meaning back to 8-9g. I've never seen 5g v'lifes.)

One possibility I've been looking at is the effects of the recently-fixed Whiptail bug. I noticed a sharp drop in the number of other herbs available as everyone moved to Uldum to farm Whiptail. During the few passes I made, I saw the rapid herb respawns, but I wasn't gathering that many more herbs due to the extra competition from large numbers of players and bots with the same idea. I'm thinking that overall herb - and v'life - production on the server went down during this time as bots were pulled away from their normal zones, and further that a large portion of the volatiles collected by casual farmers was kept for their own use and never made it to the Auction House. While Whiptail production may have gone up, it probably didn't make up for the loss of thousands of Cinderbloom and Heartbloom nodes. (With the bug fixed, hopefully the bots will spread back out and prices will return to normal in a few days.)

Another influence is the Cauldron guild achievement. Raiding guilds who have been operating since Cata came are likely getting close to the 1000 flask achievement. As guilds get closer to this, they'll be more inclined to buy Volatile Life in bulk, and can potentially put the market at a shortage. Get a few guilds doing this at a time, and this shortage will drive costs up considerably.

A nice way to make gold from this, which I personally do, is:
1/ Buy very large stack at low price (ex.: 2 stacks of 200 at 8g apiece)
2/ Relist by stacks of 8 at much higher price (ex., assuming the above: 50 stacks of 8 at 12-15g apiece)
    3/ ???
    4/ Open mail box, profit.

Lives don't move very fast, but still, I manage to pull a few thousand gold every week thanks to this. People just love having stacks tailored to their needs; they'll be much happier paying 120g for a stack of 8 than 400g for a stack of 50 if they only need 8, for starters, and what's more, they're also happier not having to calculate what they're going to have to buy: need 5 flasks? buy 5 stacks! No need to bother with "so, there's a stack of 7 here, another stack of 19 there, err, how many more do I need?"

People pay more for convenience, make the best from it!

The prices haven't gone down on my server either, around 11g per. They are a key ingredient for a lot crafted items that sell consistently well for me, for tailoring there's Dreamcloth & the Hyjal Expedition Bag for leatherworking there's Bloodied gear, and a couple of very decent pre raid epics that use them. As already mentioned Alchemy & Inscription chew through a lot as well.

I managed to snag about 3500 very cheaply (around 6g-7g ea) during the botter fire sale a few weeks ago. It seemed like something of a risky investment at the time, I certainly had misgivings about it during the lead up to the release of 4.0.6. However it turned out to be a sound investment, they were selling them for 17g each at one point just after the patch. I'm not selling them any more now, the remainder are reserved for my own usage, I go through a lot of them & I don't want to have to buy at current market price.

I can see my stock running out in the not too distant future though, so I'm with you OP - hoping the prices start falling sooner rather than later.

I picked up a stack of 200 @ 1.25 each the day after I ran out. Everything else in the ah was 12g plus. Must have been a mispost, but it came at the perfect time.
