Mobile Armory - Remote Auction House Review

I am almost at the end of my first 30-day subscription to the Remote Auction House and I thought I would share my thoughts with you all. First, I will say that the current form of the Remote AH has improved since Beta, but Blizzard will ultimately not be getting another $2.99 per month from me. Although, it may benefit some AHers, it did not deliver for me as a paid service.

    Positives

    Access
Obviously, having remote access to the AH was nice, but since I have access to a WoW computer most of the time the tool was mostly a convenience. In order for the subscription fee to be worth it one would really need to have major lapses in access to a computer with WoW installed. Now, I know you are saying, "Well, duh Allaphon, you had no need to use it if you are seldom away from a computer'!" Maybe, but I have more gripes about it later in this entry.

    Neutral/Cross Faction AH
I do not do a ton of business on Neutral or in my case Alliance AH, but I could see where this feature would be really convenient. Instead of needing to park an alt at a neutral AH in Cosmowrench, Gadgetzan, etc you can just hop on the Remote AH! For me, I would want to use this to sell Faction specific pets, patterns, etc. Additionally, I think this would be a saving grace and keep me paying $2.99/month if I had multiple accounts. But, since I do not have more than 1 account I cannot buy my own auctions in order to move goods from side to side. It is way too inconvenient to ask a friend to help me move any items that I may want on another faction.

    Aesthetics
The interface of the Remote AH I must say was good eye candy. The application looks really polished and I only wish that the functionality matched it's looks. Although most of the UI was intuitive and easy to use there were a few sources of frustration that I will mention later.

    Negatives

    (Re)Posting and Canceling Auctions
Canceling and reposting auctions in the application is a little bit of a hassle. Most of us are accustomed to in-game mods like Auctioneer, Auctionator, etc. The Remote AH will let you view your current auctions and show you where it is priced among other auctions. Unfortunately, there is no mass canceling, so you have to cancel 1 auction at a time ><. Once you have your auctions canceled that were undercut now you have to repost them. There is no feature that automates undercutting so you have to manually enter prices. Gag. Also, if you are posting multiple auctions from your personal bags or bank the application does not return to the area in the list that you last posted from. Have fun scrolling if you have hundreds of unique items in your inventory.

    Server Errors and Timing Out
Server errors and the application timing out were too common for how much I was using it. There have been blue posts about this topic and I hope that they contimue to work on the application's stability.

Auction Action, Inventory, and Access Limitations
As many of you may already know, you can only make 200 transactions on the Remote AH in a 24 hour period. That would be plenty of transactions if you were only selling high value items like BoE Epics. But, anyone that is selling glyphs, pots, flasks, cloth, gems, etc. needs much more flexibility especially when you might cancel and repost a large batch that you just posted an hour ago.

Not only are your transactions limited but so is your access to a guild bank. Do you store a lot of items in your guild bank? Well, make room in your personal bags and bank since you can only sell items from these locations and your mailbox which is subject to the 50 item rule ><.

Lastly, you cannot use the Remote AH while logged into your WoW account. Some might say, "Well why would you need to?" I typically raid 3 nights a week and those are at "primetime" AHing hours. I would make a killing being able to AH while my RL did personnel switches between bosses. But, that is why Blizzard will not allow it. Blizzard's stance is that "these services would be designed to complement the gameplay of World of Warcraft, and would be implemented in a way that doesn't detract from the gameplay for other players who do not to use the service." Would this type of access be unfair? Maybe, but all it would take is someone to pay for another account from which they conduct all of their AHing. But for me, that is not worth an extra ~$18 per month. However, Blizzard would definitely have me on the hook for another $2.99 per month if they allowed this. I know it will not happen since it is too advantageous, but I can hold out some hope.

Thanks for reading and hopefully you learned something or have Remote AH experiences of your own to share.

I have started to bump into 200 limit myself and it is getting annoying. Each stack you post counts as a transaction even though you can do it with a single button press. The transaction limit includes cross-fraction and cross-realm transaction which clearly points to blizz trying to reduce traffic as opposed to some kind of market valve.

I have to say, I LOVE it.

For Jewlcrafting, bags and even belt buckles. It is not good for glyphs since you cancel and repost soo many that you burn out your daily transactions too fast. I can check the AH on my computer at work and my phone during the day. At night before I turn off the TV for the night I check for bargains. If I have some down time during the day, I check out my auctions.

Now what I will say is this:
The mobile app for the iPhone is better then the web based interface. It will remember your price for items that are not stacks. So if you are posting 25 bags you can set the price for the first and just keep posting till they are done.

I had massive issues with the mobile app since 4.0 till this week. I am not sure if it was server side lag or what but since the launch of the app and 4.0 I never had server issues. They seem to be gone now.

In the first week or two that I had the app I think I gained 20k gold that I would have missed out on. Just last night I found 2 majestic zircons that someone miss posted for 100g total rather then 100g each. Cut this morning when I was able to get in game again and posted for 125g each as a solid.

I find my herbs for my milling and my saronite for my prospecting almost only on my phone. It is just faster really then trying to jump back and forth in game.

I like the remote AH despite the limitations you have mentioned. When i went on holiday and didn't have access to a computer it was a real boon.

Despite this, it IS unstable and often crashes, at least for me, although it never used to a few months ago. One recent update broke the automatic input of the authenticator code which almost caused me to cancel my subscription, but that was fixed after a couple of weeks. Now it's just buggy.

I like the way you can access the neutral AH even if your character isn't parked there, although it does mean that there's no real way to safely cross faction trade as even a /who will not reveal remote AH users. It has made such trading more risky.

I have been using the remote service for some time now, and i agree the pros and cons you are listing.

My biggest problem is the 200 transaction limit. I bumb in to it ALL THE TIME. Like I wrote in “chat” the other day I have written Blizzard e-mails about the service 3 times now regarding:

    1. I think the 200 transactions limit is to low. I’m not saying that it should be unlimited, but I often post +1.500 transactions a day in game (glyphs posting, cancel, and reposting 2-3 times a day)

    2. Regardless of the limit being 200, 1000 or 25.000 for that matter I seriously need some kind of counter, so I can se how many transactions I have spend. It’s all about prioritizing what I buy and sell when I’m using the remote.

I use the remote AH for arbitrage trading. Buy items on one side to sell at at higher price on the other. I also use it to get Cheaper herbs for Glyphmaking (often I buy 50-100 stacks at a time saving 4-5G/stack). Buy to stockpile. Yesterday I could get 150 stacks of .

Safe crossfaction smugling - The risk of beeing sniped is way less when you are not haveing a lvl 1 toon standing at the neutral AH ingame. When i move valuable stock i always use 2 browsers and logged in on both my accounts. This way i can buy stacks with in 1-2 seconds of posting them. (Yes i pay 2 x subscription & 2 x 2,99$ for remote)

I have moved stock worth +250.000G back and forth and only been sniped once. I was moving 100 stacks of runecloths i got at 1G each. I posted all 100 on neutal AH before starting to buy them out at 1s - before i was finished i had lost 10 stacks = 10G . When i move VERY VERY valuable stocks (like when i had a deal some month back at 10.000G / stack I NEVER posted at 1c or 1s - i put in 10 mayby 20G as buyout, just to ensure that the stack is not popping up on the top of the list if you sort all auctions assending buyout. I know it's only 1-2 seconds but it can happen. Sometimes i also send 1 item through to check if it's picked up (by a bot) before sending hole stacks through. Again this is only done when i move very valuable item.

Like I said I have written blizzard 3 times now about the 2 issues, and I’ll just keep mailing them until they either change the remote AH or at least mail be back

    --

Another “fun fact” is my choice of cell phone. I have always been kind of a “Nokia E-series fan” Right now I’m on my 2nd E90, and have had all the old models aswell. I have always said that I WASN’T getting an iphone like all my friends and never been fan of Apple products (I really like the looks, but hated the interactivity possibilities with my PC). Well after the introduction of the remote AH and the Iphone app – guess how’s decided to buy a Iphone 4?

For a while now, I've been waiting for them to get this working with blackberry, but no such luck.

On a more related subject, using the Undermine Journal's Item notification. . and Mobile Armory is a little bit OP.

Imagine you're at a stop light, your phone rights because you got an email notification of a rare and underpriced item. (Via Undermine Journal)
You suddenly log in, snag the item, within seconds of it being posted. The light turns green, you drive away with profit in your pocket.

And a ticket from the cop watching you use your cell to text and such while operating a motor vehicle. At least out here, they're nailing people for that in certain cities. =(
